The dictionary is an excellent resource, but sometimes the very proper words in the dictionary aren't the ones you need to precisely describe a person, place, thing, or emotion. Edward Gorey and Lewis Carroll never needed to explain their nonsense words-either they were understood or not, but a sense of them tickled the surrounding lines and gave their writing a new color and flavor. Readers may not understand every undictionary entry in this issue, but they may quite like the poems' textures as you chew. The LAST STANZA - An Anthology of Poems from Tel Aviv is the first book from StanzAviv, a creative collective of writers associated with Bar Ilan University and Tel Aviv University. STANZA members (or ‘Stanzites’) come from Israel, USA, UK, France, Canada, Latvia and beyond. Israel is a dramatic place and the poetry in this selection is humorous, political, tragic and inspiring. Topics range from seeking refuge, travelling in Africa, war, love, meditations on existence, being Jewish at Christmas, internet banking, waking up drunk on a riverside and more. Most poems in this ‘Stanzology’ are in English, plus there is a section in Hebrew. All profits from this book go to the ARDC (African Refugee Development Center), an NGO in south Tel Aviv that provides shelter, education, counseling and advice to refugees and asylum seekers in Israel.

Those were the questions asked of poets for this issue. The world is divided along several lines as we head into 2021. The pandemic is unlike anything experienced before. Tensions are running high between coworkers, educators and those they teach, neighbors, and even lifelong friends and family members. Relationships are dissolving Left and Right. The masked and unmasked glare at each other. The air we breathe and the surfaces we touch and the people we love are all potential killers. It's a plexiglass world, muffled and fogged. Family dynamics have shifted dramatically. And that which seems to be salvation-the vaccines-may not end social distancing for a very long time to come. We communicate via screens and signs and tears of longing and frustration. This will undoubtedly be the start and end of too many things. There is likely no one who doesn't know someone who was infected by the coronavirus-or killed by it. Poetry can't solve the toughest problems of society, but maybe it can offer a new perspective on them. There are off-topic poems herein, as well. Touching and funny, surprising and philosophical-they offer the chance to take a break from the stresses and strains eating into every aspect of our daily lives.

First published in 1978, this work bridges the gap between the study of poetic form, which tends to isolate form from meaning and structural poetics, which tends to focus on meaning without considering the stanza’s impact. Beginning with an examination of the various definitions of the stanza, the book goes on to describe the many forms of the stanza and the different strategies by which poets achieve stanzaic units of meaning. It then evaluates the logical relationships between stanzas, and, finally, assesses their place and function as parts within the poetic whole. This work will be of interest to those studying poetry and literature.
