For almost three thousand years, The Iliad and The Odyssey have thrilled people with tales of adventure in ancient Greece. The stories of Helen and Paris, the Greek gods, the Trojan War, Achilles and of Odysseus ten year quest to return home after the war are known all over the world among all cultures. But so much about the life of the man responsible for those epic poems remains a mystery that for a while some scholars doubted he even really existed. Despite the controversies surrounding him, Homer is still honored as one of civilization s greatest poets. He overcame childhood poverty and adult blindness to achieve fame as a legendary storyteller whose epics kept his audience spellbound. His poems were so vivid that 19th-century archeologists used descriptions in The Iliad to locate the city of Troy. Though many facts about his life remain unknown, his genius as a storyteller remains undisputed.

Biography is one of the most widespread literary genres worldwide. Biographies and autobiographies of actors, politicians, Nobel Prize winners, and other famous figures have never been more prominent in book shops and publishers' catalogues. This Handbook offers a wide-ranging, multi-authored survey on biography in Antiquity from its earliest representatives to Late Antiquity. It aims to be a broad introduction and a reference tool on the one hand, and to move significantly beyond the state-of-the-art on the other. To this end, it addresses conceptual questions about this sprawling genre, offers both in-depth readings of key texts and diachronic studies, and deals with the reception of ancient biography across multiple eras up to the present day. In addition, it takes a wide approach to the concept of ancient biography by examining biographical depictions in different textual and visual media (epigraphy, sculpture, architecture) and by providing outlines of biographical developments in ancient and late antique cultures other than Graeco-Roman. Highly accessible, this book aims at a broad audience ranging from specialists to newcomers in the field. Chapters provide English translations of ancient (and modern) terminology and citations. In addition, all individual chapters are concluded by a section containing suggestions for further reading on their specific topic.

This is the fascinating story of the life and times of Homer W. Snow. Homer was born on October 23, 1924, in the small rural village of Nashville, Michigan. In his story, Homer recalls watching his neighbor cranking his Model T Ford Touring car, going frogging and selling them to the local meat market, and working two jobs to purchase a Fleetwood bicycle. Homer joined the military and was deployed to Naples, Italy during World War II. Homer describes the ship voyage to Italy and jokingly recounts the food made from the inexperienced cooks. Homer details his life during the war and how met his future wife, Tecla . After the war, Homer returned to Michigan and soon after, Tecla arrived to start her new life in America. Homer and Tecla went on to have five children. Homer owned and operated the Snow Archery Shop and Snow & Son Locksmiths which led him to collecting padlocks, keys, Post Office doors, and doorknobs. Ultimately, Homer lived an amazing life that is carefully narrated in this book. This story gives the reader a historical glimpse of life in the mid-west during the 1920s-1940s and recounts the life of a great man, Homer W. Snow.

Homer S The Iliad And The Odyssey written by Alberto Manguel and has been published by Atlantic Books Ltd this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-15 with Literary Criticism categories.

The stories of the Trojan war and Helen of Troy, Patroclus and Achilles, the Sirens and the Cyclops are embedded in western culture, yet readers often fail to recognise that they were made famous by two epic poems, The Iliad and The Odyssey, and one blind poet: Homer. Alberto Manguel begins his book with the poems' inception in ancient Greece and demonstrates how these poems have reverberated subsequently through the western canon, from the Rome of Virgil and Horace to Joyce's Dublin and Derek Walcott's Caribbean, via Dante and Racine. In this lyrical and graceful short volume, Manguel delights in the original poems and celebrates their presence throughout history.

This book demonstrates how Homeric poetry manages to confer significance on persons and actions, interpreting the world and the lives of the people who inhabit it. Taking central themes like characterization, death, and the gods, the author argues that current ideas of the limitations of "oral poetry" are unreal, and that Homer embodies a view of the world both unique and profound.

Excerpt from Greece in the Times of Homer: An Account of the Life, Customs, and Habits of the Greeks During the Homeric Period Repeated requests from readers of my His tory of Greece for a book on the Homeric times, which, as a matter of necessity, were briefly treated in the history, have induced me to undertake the present work. There is, per haps, no page in the whole history of the Hel lenic race so interesting and instructive as the Homeric age. An irresistible charm has always drawn me to that period. When we consider that centuries before Christ, when the rest of the world was steeped in barbarism, the Hellenic peo ple enjoyed a civilization in many respects um surpassed to this day, that they transported large armies across the sea, that they first of all found ed institutions -which have elevated mankind, that they produced a poet who alone is sufficient to glorify a nation, we may well feel an interest in investigating more fully such an age.
