ART OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES. Paki Harrison is widely regarded as New Zealand's greatest living master carver, a man with a huge reputation as a leading tohunga of the art form. He possesses immense knowledge about the traditional arts of the carver, extending way beyond the actual physical arts to include its most ancient aspects - the symbolism contained in Maori art, to its role in transmitting old tribal history. He has also taught and written extensively on the art of the tohunga whakairo. This major biography by Ranginui Walker, himself a well-known public figure, traces Paki Harrison's life and work, from his privileged upbringing in the Ngati Porou household of his grandmother, where he was singled out for special training. The carving and building of several big meeting houses is described in detail, from the inside.

"In this book, the carver values the past, works within the communal framework of Maoritanga and respects the tapu nature of what he does; the artist looks to the present and future, practises as an individual within the studio and is concerned with the essential rather than spiritual nature of the work." --Dust jacket.

Wood carving is one of the supreme expressions of New Zealand identity. Beginning with carving's mythical origins, Te Toi Whakairo explores the evolution of styles and techniques through the four main artistic periods to the present day, and provides detailed explanations of carving styles in different parts of the country, using examples from meeting houses and leading artists. Later chapters delve into the main structures, forms and motifs, and the role of the woodcarver, and explore the status of the art in contemporary New Zealand. Practical guidance is given for use of materials, tools, techniques, surface and background decoration, the human figure, and carving poupou.

Tene Waitere (1854-1931) of the Ngati Tarawhai was the most innovative Maori wood carver of his time. His works reached global audiences, decades before the globalization of culture became a fashionable topic. This is the first book about Tene Waitere, with its elegant and powerful photographs documenting great houses and other carvings now dispersed in England, Germany, and various parts of New Zealand. Hinemihi, the carved house featured in one section of this book, sheltered survivors of the Mt. Tarawera volcanic eruption in 1886 before being removed to the park of an English country house. The magnificent His carved Ta Moko panel is one of New Zealand's icons. The travels of Tene Waitere's works tell us something about the interplay between empire and art. The book includes interviews and combined perspectives of his descendants - a leading contemporary carver, a master photographer, and a distinguished anthropologist and historian of Pacific art - making this book unique as a dial

Kowhaiwhai, according to John Hovell, is about process, a shorthand summary of the passage of life, and a space within the whare whakairo (decorated meeting house) for the Maori artist to express his wry and droll view of human nature. This book looks at John Hovell's life and work, his ongoing interest in kowhaiwhai, and locates him within a larger story of Maori art. From the mid-1960s, Hovell was part of the contemporary Maori art movement, exhibiting his paintings alongside artists such as Paratene Matchitt and Sandy Adsett, and taking part in the activities of organisations such as the Maori Artists and Writers Society. Since the mid-1980s Hovell has been designing and producing kowhaiwhai and murals for marae projects in Auckland, the Coromandel peninsula and the East Coast. He has established a reputation as a kowhaiwhai artist of note, working alongside tohunga whakairo (carving experts) such as Pakiriki Harrison. Richly illustrated with over 100 colour images of Hovell's painting and kowhaiwhai projects, this book demonstrates that Hovell is an important artist who has made a substantial contribution to contemporary Maori visual culture.
