They agreed that Jesus's words and actions reflected those of a religious paranoic. By definition, from an atheist point of view, Jesus cannot be considered as the son of God. Therefore, some of his statements, reported in the Gospels, appear to be particularly insane. Let us quote: • "The Father is in me and I am in the Father." • "I am the bread of life that comes down from heaven." • "He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life." A first question arises: what was the psychic illness of the one who uttered such words? Based on the Gospels, the author follows Jesus in his daily life, in his actions and words. This investigation reveals Jesus' pathologies: schizophrenia (he withdraws from the world and builds another one in its place), anal character (a stage of infantile development characterized by a binary Manicheism; let us remember that "he who is not with me is against me," and an extreme concern for order), aggressive paranoia. Finally, Jesus can be diagnosed clinically as a "mega-paranoid," i.e., a paranoid producing mythical projections. Jesus was phenomenally successful during his lifetime and over the centuries. At this point, another question arises: How did he manage to convince the crowds? For the author, the mythical projections of Jesus came to speak directly to the unconscious of the crowds. The obsessive neuroses present in this collective and individual unconscious were channeled into the promises of Jesus who assured, in exchange for belief in his person, purification, eternal life, and social reversal. The key to the success of Jesus would thus reside in a fortuitous meeting between structures of the unconscious. These structures remaining identical through time explains the timeless success of Christianity. With humor and erudition, Frédéric Joi offers us a rational explanation of mass religious behavior that he does not hesitate to bring closer to the contemporary political field and the concept of crowd manipulation. To conclude his essay, he proposes, in the form of a questionnaire, to test the capacity of each one to be a prophet! Frédéric Joi is the author of Mahomet était-il fou? (Max Milo 2010). The Jesus jigsaw When the thought first occurred to me that Jesus was a psychologist, I was excited, because it was like seeing a pattern in a jigsaw puzzle that had baffled me for most of my life. I had always been interested in the parables of Jesus. I gathered them together, noticed similarities; I read books about them; a couple of the parables became the guiding principles of my life. But no matter how much I looked there were still some that didn't make sense, and readers who have been Bible students will have hit the same problem. For instance, what would you make of an employer who throws his staff in jail, or another employer who gives some of his workers 12 hours’ pay for one hour’s work, or a father who throws a party for a son who has just blown the family fortune, or a king who has his managers tortured. These pieces don’t fit. But if you love the parables, as I do, you come back to them from time to time. That’s what I was a doing a few years ago. I was preparing to go back into the Methodist ministry, after a long break. Another part was updating my study of psychology. I had studied it as part of my original ministry training, but I wanted to study the main new version today, cognitive therapy. With this approach, if a client looks worried; the therapist says: “What are are you feeling right now?” And the client says, “I feel tense and stressed.” And the therapist says, “What were you thinking about just before you started feeling stressed? And a pattern emerges of the things that get this client into trouble. These patterns are called “schemas”. The penny drops Well, I was doing these two kinds of research when it occurred to me that there were characters in the parables who had bad schemas. And immediately some of my problem parables made sense! The people in these parables needed therapy. And I believe that’s why Jesus was telling parables: to help people recognize their bad schemas and do something about them. Let's not exaggerate I don't want to overstate the case. These parallels between Jesus and psychology don’t apply to everything he said: they mainly apply to his parables. And even the bit of psychology that Jesus did do was pretty hit and miss. He did it in public, so you couldn’t really discuss your problem with him, and you might sit on the edge of a crowd of listeners for a couple of hours and your particular problem might not come up at all. Or you might be a hypochondriac and start trying medicine that doesn’t really suit you at all. You might hear a parable about loving your neighbor, and you might think: my husband is beating me up but it’s my duty to love him. And you would be dead wrong; you should be calling the police. It’s like taking somebody else’s medicine! So I’d advise readers not to be too keen to copy the parables! When in doubt, see a professional. Public education An important part of Jesus’ psychology is that he did it in public, and that is one of my hopes in publishing this book, that people will read it, preachers will preach about it, and it will contribute to public understanding. The past 2000 years of religious history includes unspeakable cruelty, wars, terrorism, indoctrination, lies and deception and this rightly leads to opposition, but also strangely to acceptance/indifference/excuses by others. The critical missing fact is that God had nothing to do with these religions but abhors them. What a pathetic assumption to blame God. The truth about God and these religious groups could quickly clarify the situation. Chapter 16 is a chapter that begins to sort out HOW all this religious mess occurred. Seriously Wrong means there is NO eternal value in these religions. These belief systems were the fabrication of men and/or women and did NOT come from God. The evidence is overwhelming and deceit runs through these religions like vultures going through a carcass. You do not need a forensic analysis, but you can do a complete autopsy if you wish. The damaging evidence regarding these groups is clearly seen and very logical and understandable from the book. This is because AS YOU UNDERSTAND GOD (a significant subject in the book) you do not need to go very far into these beliefs to see huge problems. One of the attitudes you need is a LOVE OF THE TRUTH more than the love of what you currently believe. You can understand God, His purpose, His plan inasmuch as He has revealed Himself. Incredibly, one major obstacle to overcome will be the MAGNITUDE OF THE DECEIT. Lies on top of lies often for many centuries define todays religions. Religion has become mans idea of God and there is no consistency, just random unrelated doctrines. The truth is infinitely different with everything perfectly connected to a single purpose. Ultimately, your success or failure in life is simply a matter of where you place your trust. Is your trust in God or is it in men/women, who say they are telling you
