The mill of Moara is powered not by wind, but by storytelling. So long as the villagers surrounding the mill tell one another stories, the mill continues to work. When the mill unexpectedly stops, storytellers from across the land flock to Moara to see if their tale can turn the mill’s wings once again. None are successful, until a little boy calls a flock of storks down from the sky and a strange new storyteller joins him by the fire . . . Inspired by Romanian folklore, Tales of the White Stork is a collection of stories that touch on themes of courage, humility, and compassion.

Some of the world's largest and most spectacular birds are to be found among this group of wading birds. Tragically, they also include many of the world's most endangered species, as changes in land use erode their wetland habitats. Some like the White Stork have lived alongside humans for hundreds of years and are well known from numerous studies. Others, like the Storm's stork and ibises of West Africa, South-East Asia and South America live so secluded a life in the remote corners of the globe that they will probably be extinct before even the most basic details of their biology are known. In this monograph, three authors and two artists have combined their skills to capture what is known of this group of wading birds. The text opens with general chapters on taxonomy and feeding, breeding and behavior, followed by detailed coverage of each species. Feeding behaviour species list: American wood stork - mycteria americana: milky stork - mycteria cinerea: yellowbilled stork - mycteria ibis: painted stork - mycteria leucocephala: African openbill stork - anastomus oscitans: Asian openbill stork - anastomus lamelligerus: black stork - ciconia nigra: adbim's stork - ciconia abdimii: woolynecked stork - ciconia episcopus: storm's stork - ciconia stormi: maguari stork - ciconia maguari: white stork - ciconia ciconia: oriental white stork - ciconia boyciana: blacknecked stork - ephippiorhynchus asiaticus: saddlebill stork - ephipporhynchus sengalensis: jabiru stork - jabiru myceteria: lesser adjutant stork - leptopilos javanicus: greater adjutant stork - leptoptilos dubius: marabou stork: leptoptilos crumeniferus: shoebill - balaeniceps rex: American white ibis - eudocimus ruber: barefaced ibis - phimosus infuscatus: glossy ibis - plegadis falcinellus: whitefaced ibis - plegadis chihi: puna ibis - plegadis ridgwayi: sharptailed ibis - cercibis oxycerca: plumbeous ibis - harpiprion caerulscens: buffnecked ibis - theristicus caudatus: green ibis - mesembrinibis cayennensis: hadada ibis - bostrychia hagedash: wattled ibis - bostrychia carunculata: oliv ibis - bostrychia olivacea: spotbreasted ibis - bostrychia reae madagascar crested this - loghotihis cristata: sacred this - threskiornis aethiopicus: oriental white ibis - threskionis melanoaphaius: Australian white ibis - threskiornis molucca: strawnecked ibis - threskiornis spinicollis: waldrapp ibis - eronticus eremita: bald ibis - geronticus calvus: black ibis - pseudibis papillosa: giant ibis - thaumatibis gigantea: oriential crested ibis - nipponia

Eric Brauer was the child of a successful German Jewish family from Breslau, Germany. He grew up in a multi-cultural environment consisting of Protestants, Catholics and Jews. Once Adolf Hitler came into power, Eric's life changed with him being kicked out of school and his father losing his business. With the world being turned upside down, Eric was sent to a farm school to learn those skills which would allow him to immigrate to Palestine or South America. Farming would then provide the means for a community of Jewish youth to survive. Kristallnacht changed the world for Eric and his family. Eric spent some time in Buchenwald Concentration Camp and then was fortunate enough to have been released. He was chosen to go to England on the Kinder Transport. Once in England, he worked on a farm. By a stroke of good fortune, Eric met an aristocratic English lady who afforded him the opportunity to go back to school at the London School of Economics. Unfortunately, that experience was short-lived as he was interned in England as an enemy alien. After being released, he was able to join the British army. Then, he used his relationship with the English lady to join a highly trained group under the Special Operations Executive. That is when Eric Brauer became Eric Bowes. He became a saboteur spending 242 days behind German lines blowing up facilities, slowing the construction of German machines of war. After the war, Eric found his parents who had survived Theresienstadt and Auschwitz Concentration Camps. Upon his father's death bed many years later, Eric made a promise to go back to Breslau, Germany now Wroclaw, Poland to work with the local Jewish community to resurrect the White Stork Synagogue. The synagogue had been constructed in the 1820s. On Kristallnacht, the White Stork had been reduced to a hollow shell. Eric's efforts along with many others are detailed over a period of more than ten years that it took for the synagogue to be brought back to its former glory.

When The Storks Came Home is a charming, fictionalized retelling of the successful reintroduction of the white stork at the Knepp Estate, a UK native bird that has been brought back from extinction. In this second picture book from best-selling author and globally significant conservationist Isabella Tree, we meet eight-year-old Beanie, who loves birds. When she discovers that huge white storks used to live in her own village but were hunted to extinction in the UK 600 years ago, she is determined to find a way to bring them back. But reintroducing a vanished species is not so simple! Storks can fly hundreds of miles, so releasing storks into the local countryside won’t be enough to make them return and stay for good. With the help of other villagers, Beanie hatches a plan… Beautiful illustrations help bring this powerful and important story to life, teaching children about conservation and their environment in an accessible way. Ivy Kids brings you beautiful, sustainably printed books to rewild your child, nurture creativity, and foster a deep connection with the living world. Winner of the Sustainability Award at the Independent Publishers Awards 2022, Ivy Kids books are planet-friendly, printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper, locally to where they will be sold. Praise for Isabella Tree's first picture book When We Went Wild: ‘A charming inoculation of pure wild life – just what Dr. Earth ordered.’ CHRIS PACKHAM ‘This book would sit brilliantly on any nature-loving child’s bookshelf’ BBC WILDLIFE MAGAZINE ‘Charms young readers with the power of rewilding’ NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TRAVELLER ‘I love this book. Through this book, readers will gain a comprehensive overview of transdisciplinary knowledge co-production in local contexts as an issue-driven and solution-oriented process, and will come to understand its relationship to societal transformation processes toward sustainability. In a single volume, the theory, approaches and academic implications of this novel type of knowledge production are addressed, together with its societal impacts. In the midst of global anthropogenic impacts that affect various environments, over the past few decades we have observed autonomous initiatives in local communities around the world to tackle these environmental challenges. It is vital that such local actions be scaled up to achieve sustainable societies, which requires societal transformation on larger scales. Thanks to numerous collaborative actions in local communities, transdisciplinary knowledge co-production among diverse stakeholders has successfully been mobilized, resulting in the development of Integrated Local Environmental Knowledge (ILEK); knowledge that can inform and support decisions and actions promoting the sustainable transformation of society. This book uses comparative case studies in communities around the world to illuminate and clarify processes and factors promoting the co-production and utilization of ILEK to facilitate decision-making. In addition, readers will gain deeper insights into the science-society interactions that can contribute to finding collaborative solutions to a wide range of critical environmental problems. Though the book is ideally suited for researchers and students, it also offers a valuable resource for practitioners, government agencies, and stakeholder agencies.
