If you read (or write) popular science, you might sometimes wonder: how do the authors manage to make subjects that once put you to sleep in science class both so entertaining and approachable? The use of language is key. Based on analyses of popular science bestsellers, this linguistic study shows how expert popularizers use the voices and narratives of scientists to engage readers, demonstrating the power of science and portraying researchers as champions of knowledge. By doing so they often blur the lines between nonfiction and fiction, inviting readers to take part in thought experiments and turn ordinary scientists into omnipotent heroes.

Linguistic Science And The Teaching Of English written by Henry Lee Smith and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1956 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

In this work the author discusses recent advances in linguistic science and the applicability of linguistics to the teaching of reading, the structure of English, as well as the relation of the spoken language to literature in the secondary schools and to the teaching of foreign languages throughout the educational system. The importance of the "structure" of the language as essential preparation for all who teach any aspect of the language arts--from reading in the elementary grades to literature and foreign languages in the secondary schools and colleges--is developed thoroughly. An extremely significant point is the application of linguistics to teaching. Henry Lee Smith shows that if a child is not systematically taught the relationship between sound symbol and written symbol when he is ready and eager for it his reading can easily become a serious problem.

Russian Social Science Reader is one of a series designed for non-linguists who need knowledge of the Russian language in order to pursue their interests in fields other than language or literature. The purpose of this book is to provide real assistance to the trained social scientist who, having already mastered his own discipline, is willing to devote a little time to mastering the Russian language for the purpose of reading specialist material in his own field. The book begins with discussions of Russian syntax and word formation, and Russian political, economic, and legal terminologies. Separate chapters then provide extracts from the Constitution of the Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic and Constitution of the USSR in Russian with English translations; and extracts dealing with wide range of topics that illustrate a range of linguistic usage. Topics covered include housing and education, employment of the disabled, industrialization, collectivization of agriculture, and the Soviet economic and legal systems.

Let S Read written by Leonard Bloomfield and has been published by Wayne State University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1961 with Education categories.

Let's Read is a simple and systematic way to teach basic reading. Developed by noted linguist Leonard Bloomfield, the book is based on the alphabetic spelling patterns of English. Bloomfield offered an antidote to the idea that English is a difficult language to learn to read by teaching the learner to decode the phonemic sound-letter correlations of the language in a sequential, logical progression of lessons based on its spelling patterns. The learner is first introduced to the most consistent (alphabetic) vocabulary and then to increasingly less alphabetic and less frequent spelling patterns within a vocabulary of about 5,000 words.
