Excerpt from The Literature of National Music The present essay is republished from The Musical Times (london: Novello, Ewer and where it appeared in the monthly numbers from July, 1878, to March, 1879. Some additions have been made in order to render it convenient as a book of reference. I shall not apologise for its republication, since it is not likely to interest any but intelligent inquirers. These, I doubt not, are convinced that, just as painters, sculptors, and architects find it useful and highly interesting to pursue the investigations of their respective arts among nations in different stages of civilisation, musicians also should take a wider view of their art than they are too apt to do. The greatest obstacle to information which the student of National Music is likely to encounter, is the difficulty in gaining access to many Of the publications bearing on the subject. Every European country ought to pos sess in its National Library not only all the collections of its own national songs and tunes, but also those Of other countries. Most of these publications are out of print, and there is no probability, except in some rare instances, of their being republished. They become daily more scarce, and soon it will be impossible to collect them together, even for a National Library. Perhaps this little book may be of some assistance to the librarian as well as to the musician. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

The confluence between music and literature, long hymned as sister arts, is a newly burgeoning field of critical inquiry. This innovative collection of interdisciplinary essays provides a valuable introduction to the field, mapping the contours of recent research and investigating the mutual aesthetic influence of the two arts and their common historical ground. The examination of literary works using music as an analogy for literary composition and agent of cultural value, and the consideration of musical works whose structure is derived from literary models will excite the interest of both professional scholars and students in the fields of musicology, literary studies and modern European languages. (Legenda 2006) Delia da Sousa Correa is Lecturer in Literature at The Open University. She is the author of George Eliot, Music and Victorian Culture (2002) and editor of

Dealing with the interconnections between music and the written word, this volume brings into focus an updated range of analytical and interpretative approaches which transcend the domain of formalist paradigms and the purist assumption of music’s non-referentiality. Grouped into three thematic sections, these fifteen essays by Italian, British and American scholars shed light on a phenomenological network embracing different historical, socio-cultural and genre contexts and a variety of theoretical concepts, such as intermediality, the soundscape notion, and musicalisation. At one end of the spectrum, music emerges as a driving cultural force, an agent cooperating with signifying and communication processes and an element functionally woven into the discursive fabric of the literary work. The authors also provide case studies of the fruitful musico-literary dialogue by taking into account the seminal role of composers, singer-songwriters, and performers. From another standpoint, the music-in-literature and literature-in-music dynamics are explored through the syntax of hybridisations, transcoding experiments, and iconic analogies.

It can safely be said that when literary texts are utilized or adapted by a musician to create a new work of art, it is seldom that a diminished or lessened product results. Rather, such a merging usually enlarges & enhances both text and tune. These essays offer an analysis of several adaptations, and attempt to assess just what the musicians or writers have modified or changed from to the original as they re-form it into an altogether different media.
