This is a book for anyone interested in cultural renewal and ethnic diversity. It is an historical account of Luso (Portuguese) Asians, specifically those from Macau (China), and their role in helping to establish and maintain the first global economy connecting Europe and Asia. Part 1 describes their early settlements across the Portuguese Overseas Empire, beginning with Goa in 1511, through migrations to Malacca, Indonesia, Siam, Macau, Hong Kong, and Shanghai up to the end of the Opium Wars in 1860. Part 2 focuses on the largest group of Luso-Asians from Macau, the "Macanese", who settled from 1842 in Hong Kong to work for the British colonial government, merchant houses, and international banks. Several stories of individuals, who were community activists, clerks, business owners, working class proprietors, colonial subjects, and wartime refugees, are offered to illustrate the deterioration relations with the government as World War II approached. Those who survived experienced a renewal of cultural identity and a legacy for future generations. The final chapter traces their post-war migrations to Europe, Australia, and the United States, and discusses tangled relations with Macau, as it grew to become the casino gaming capital of the world. The conclusion then highlights recent efforts of expatriates to use technology to develop cultural and commercial exchanges with modern China, an attempt to recapture the traditional role of the Macanese as intermediaries and ambassadors of change.

In The Making of Macau’s Fusion Cuisine: From Family Table to World Stage, Annabel Jackson argues that Macanese cuisine cannot be seen as a unique product of Portuguese colonialism in southern China. Instead, it needs to be understood in the context of Portugal’s culinary footprint in Asia and beyond. She contends that the culinary cultures of other Portuguese colonies in Asia and Africa also influenced the cuisine in Macau. Macanese cuisine plays a role in evoking a sense of Macanese identity within Macau as well as in the Macanese diaspora. As the Macanese have increasingly defined themselves as an ethnically and culturally distinct group, their cuisine has growingly been seen as a critical identifier of cohesion and difference. The book shows how Macanese cuisine is moving from being an everyday production of food in a domestic setting to something more symbolic and ceremonial. It also argues that the practice of recipe sharing, historically controversial among the Macanese, is now viewed as an important process. The old sailor pulled out a stub of a pencil from a soiled shirt pocket and began to cross out letters on the drink coaster. The circular piece of paper had the words The Brass Monkey in a nice scroll at the top and then a picture of three monkeys in the center, with the additional worlds, see, hear, speak, no evil underneath. He first removed, no evil, and then began to systematically pencil out all the letters in The Brass Monkey which were not contained in see, hear, speak. This left H. E. Rasske on the face of the coaster. An alert waitress soon picked up the empty drink glass and paper coaster returning both items to the bartender. In this manner, word reached Rasske quickly that someone needed to talk to him.
