In 2012, to celebrate the centennial of Poetry, the Press published The Open Door:100 Poems,100 Years of Poetry Magazine, edited by Share and Wiman; that is the model for this new anthology of fifty essays about reading poetry. All were commissioned by Poetry for a column called The View From Here, in which people "from outside the world of poetry" are invited to describe when and why they read poetry. The editors sought contributions from philosophers and journalists, musicians and artists, doctors and soldiers, an iron-worker, a lawyer, anthropologist, economist, and politician. Contributors include Neko Case, Roger Ebert, Richard Rorty, Rhymefest, Lynda Barry, Daniel Handler, and Alex Ross. They have arranged the essays in groups and pulled out quotes to open each of the eight sections as a way to suggest themes without trying to prescribe how the pieces should be read. Each essay retains its own voice, and many are surprising, provocative, touching, or funny.

When Harriet Monroe founded Poetry magazine in Chicago in 1912, she began with an image: the Open Door. “May the great poet we are looking for never find it shut, or half-shut, against his ample genius!” For a century, the most important and enduring poets have walked through that door—William Carlos Williams and Wallace Stevens in its first years, Rae Armantrout and Kay Ryan in 2011. And at the same time, Poetry continues to discover the new voices who will be read a century from now. Poetry’s archives are incomparable, and to celebrate the magazine’s centennial, editors Don Share and Christian Wiman combed them to create a new kind of anthology, energized by the self-imposed limitation to one hundred poems. Rather than attempting to be exhaustive or definitive—or even to offer the most familiar works—they have assembled a collection of poems that, in their juxtaposition, echo across a century of poetry. Adrienne Rich appears alongside Charles Bukowski; poems by Isaac Rosenberg and Randall Jarrell on the two world wars flank a devastating Vietnam War poem by the lesser-known George Starbuck; August Kleinzahler’s “The Hereafter” precedes “Prufrock,” casting Eliot’s masterpiece in a new light. Short extracts from Poetry’s letters and criticism punctuate the verse selections, hinting at themes and threads and serving as guides, interlocutors, or dissenting voices. The resulting volume is an anthology like no other, a celebration of idiosyncrasy and invention, a vital monument to an institution that refuses to be static, and, most of all, a book that lovers of poetry will devour, debate, and keep close at hand.

Anthology Of Magazine Verse For 1913 written by William Stanley Braithwaite and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-12 with Poetry categories.

Excerpt from Anthology of Magazine Verse for 1913: Including the Magazines and the Poets; A Review Poetry is one of the realities that persist. The facade and dome of palace and temple, the monuments of heroes and saints, crumble before the ruining breath of time, while the Psalms last. So when another year passes and we sum up our achievements, there is no achievement more vital in registering the soul of a people than its poetry. But in all things that men do, their relationship is objective except those things in which art, religion, love, and nature express their influence through the private thoughts and feelings of men. These four things are the realities, all the others are symbols. And the essence of art, as well as religion and love and nature, is a conscious and mysterious thing, called Poetry. And men will find, if they will only stop to look, that at the bottom of all this poetry, no matter what the theme or the particular artistic shaping, there is something with which they are familiar, because in their own souls there has been an unceasing mystery which they find named in the magic utterance of some lonely and neglected maker of verses. The poetry in the magazines for this past year has been of a general high standard. The long poems have been well sustained, and there has been a larger quantity of pure lyric pieces than in the past two or three years.
