This work by Mexican theorist Adrián Sotelo Valencia succinctly analyses the process of super-exploitation in the present day context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Drawing upon methodological insights from Hungarian Marxist István Mészáros, Brazilian Marxist Ruy Mauro Marini, and others, Sotelo demonstrates the pivotal importance of analysing second order mediations as he builds an innovative, expanded model of structural dependency. The result is a more holistic, dialectical grasp of the contradictory dynamics of contemporary imperialism where Capital globally deploys technology for automation in an unsustainable drive for profit that displaces labor and increasingly threatens the reproduction of the global labor force. Empirical evidence presented throughout this work serves to reinforce its powerful, updated articulation of Marxist Dependency Theory.

In Germany, a liberal concept of racism is advocated by anti-discrimination agencies and the radical left alike. This approach is primarily concerned with representation, inclusion, and diversity. The connection between class and race is rarely addressed. Nevertheless, there exists a critical Marxist tradition of racism research. The Diversity of Exploitation seeks to draw upon this tradition. At the same time, the book offers a political intervention in the current debate on structural and institutional racism, whether in the labor market or in the police force. It presents alternatives to liberal antiracism by introducing a Marxist concept of racism in theory and practice. In Reading Sartre’s Second Ethics, Elizabeth A. Bowman and Robert V. Stone provide a comprehensive, reconstructive, and critical interpretation of Jean-Paul Sartre’s mature dialectical ethics. The key Sartrean texts are two posthumously published lectures, one delivered at the Gramsci Institute in Rome in 1964, the other scheduled to be delivered at Cornell University in 1965 but cancelled by Sartre in protest of U.S. foreign policy. Though different in content, method, and intended audience, Sartre gave both lectures the shared title “Morality and History.” As Bowman and Stone argue, these texts comprise a single, systematic ethic in two parts. The Cornell lecture focuses primarily on a regressive and phenomenological analysis of normativity and its ambiguous place in lived moral experience; the Rome lecture focuses primarily on a progressive and dialectical synthesis of the ends or goals of historical conduct. Taken together, the two texts demonstrate that “integral humanity” is always possible because the means to it can always be freely invented.

There have been numerous accounts exploring the relationship between institutions and firm practices. However, much of this literature tends to be located into distinct theoretical-traditional 'silos', such as national business systems, social systems of production, regulation theory, or varieties of capitalism, with limited dialogue between different approaches to enhance understanding of institutional effects. Again, evaluations of the relationship between institutions and employment relations have tended to be of the broad-brushstroke nature, often founded on macro-data, and with only limited attention being accorded to internal diversity and details of actual practice. The Handbook aims to fill this gap by bringing together an assembly of comprehensive and high quality chapters to enable understanding of changes in employment relations since the early 1970s. Theoretically-based chapters attempt to link varieties of capitalism, business systems, and different modes of regulation to the specific practice of employment relations, and offer a truly comparative treatment of the subject, providing frameworks and empirical evidence for understanding trends in employment relations in different parts of the world. Most notably, the Handbook seeks to incorporate at a theoretical level regulationist accounts and recent work that link bounded internal systemic diversity with change, and, at an applied level, a greater emphasis on recent applied evidence, specifically dealing with the employment contract, its implementation, and related questions of work organization. It will be useful to academics and students of industrial relations, political economy, and management.

At the height of the Algerian war, Jean-Paul Sartre embarked on a fundamental reappraisal of his philosophical and political thought. The result was the Critique of Dialectical Reason, an intellectual masterpiece of the twentieth century, now republished with a major original introduction by Fredric Jameson. In it, Sartre set out the basic categories for the renovated theory of history that he believed was necessary for post-war Marxism. Sartre's formal aim was to establish the dialectical intelligibility of history itself, as what he called 'a totalisation without a totaliser'. But, at the same time, his substantive concern was the structure of class struggle and the fate of mass movements of popular revolt, from the French Revolution at the end of the eighteenth century to the Russian and Chinese revolutions in the twentieth: their ascent, stabilisation, petrification and decline, in a world still overwhelmingly dominated by scarcity.

This book is a treatise against neoliberalism illuminated by the path of China. China is a model to be mimicked, but more so theoretically than by replication. If anything, nations of the global South must rid themselves of neoliberally imposed ‘one-size-fits all’ models, instrumentalised to shift value to US empire. Neoliberal models, robbing nations of their histories and resources, are negative ‘best practice’ serving the interests of the hegemon. Developing nations need to search for the theory that corresponds to their own conditions and development strategies. China’s experience, anchored in labour as the historical agent, offers numerous theoretical cues as to how to build comparable home-grown paths. Thinking development with a subject voids reductionist politics in favour of sober class analysis. The study concludes by restating the age-old wisdom that there is no development without the rule of labour.

Urban Triage written by James Kyung-Jin Lee and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Social Science categories.

In the 1980s, America witnessed an explosion in the production, popularity, and influence of literary works by people of color and a decade-long economic downturn that severely affected America's inner cities and the already disadvantaged communities of color that lived there. Marked by soaring levels of unemployment, homelessness, violence, drug abuse, and despair, this urban crisis gave the lie to the American dream, particularly when contrasted with the success enjoyed by the era's iconic stockbrokers and other privileged groups, whose fortunes increased dramatically under Reaganomics. In Urban Triage, James Kyung-Jin Lee explores how these parallel trends of literary celebration and social misery manifested themselves in fictional narratives of racial anxiety by focusing on four key works: Alejandro Morales's The Brick People, John Edgar Wideman's Philadelphia Fire, Hisaye Yamamoto's "A Fire in Fontana," and Tom Wolfe's The Bonfire of the Vanities. Each of these fictions, he finds, addresses the decade's racial, ethnic, and economic inequities from differing perspectives: Morales's revisions of Chicano identity, Yamamoto's troubled invocation of the affinities between African Americans and Asian Americans, the problematic connections between black intellectuals and the black community aired by Wideman, and Wolfe's satirization of white privilege. Drawing on the fields of literary criticism, public policy, sociology, and journalism, Lee deftly assesses the success with which these multicultural fictions engaged in the debates over these issues and the extent to which they may actually have alienated the very communities that their creators purported to represent. Challenging boththe uncritical celebration of abstract multiculturalism and its simpleminded vilification, Lee roots Urban Triage in specific instances of multiracial contact and deeply informed readings of works that have been canonized within ethnic studies and of those that either remain misunderstood or were misguided from the start. James Kyung-Jin Lee is assistant professor of English and Asian American studies at the University of Texas at Austin.

First published in 1989. The publication of Models in geography presaged a sea change in the practice of Anglo-American geography. For a new set of models, this book provides a summary of their nature, spirit and purpose based upon a political-economy perspective. The book is split into two volumes, each consisting of four parts. This makes the title suitable for students and geographers with an interest in models of the city, civil society and social theory.
