It's time to face an inevitable conclusion: School reform does not reform schools. That's because reform movements conceive of schools as being about transmitting knowledge. Yet, schools are not primarily about knowledge. They are about the construction of meaning and morality in the lives of students and communities. In this book, the authors argue that to break this recycling of reform efforts, we must understand how schools construct moral life. The focus is on two elementary schools: Rougemont, an historically African American school that was closed during school desegregation in the 1970s, and Cedar Grove, an historically white school to which the former Rougemont students were sent. Described are the histories of these schools, the communities in which they are located, and some of the people who influenced and were influenced by the schools. From those contexts the authors then make explicit the "virtues" that these communities and schools constructed and valued, and describe how those virtues came to influence lives. The oral histories of the two schools and their communities provide the basis of a novel critique of the value conflict that has characterized educational reform in this country. The social construction of virtue offers an alternative perspective on the moral purpose of schooling in America.

This volume has its origin in the Francis T. Villemain Memorial lectures at San Jose State University – a lecture series established in 1992 to honor the memory of 1 Dean Francis T. Villemain. All the essays in this volume, with the exception of those by Gert Biesta, Susan Verducci, and Michael Katz, were developed from l- tures given as part of the series. The general rubric of the lectures was “democracy, education, and the moral life” – a title reflecting Villemain’s lifelong love of the work of John Dewey whose preface to his famous work in 1916, Democracy and Education, suggested that the purpose of education was to develop democratic ci- zens, citizens infused with the spirit of democracy and the capacity to think and act intelligently within democratic settings. Of course, for Dewey, democracy was not to be conceived of as merely a political form of government, but as a shared form of social life, one that was inclusive rather than exclusive and one that was capable of adapting to the changing features of contemporary social and political reality. Francis T. Villemain’s appreciation for the intersections of the values of dem- racy, education, and the moral life was heightened by his doctoral work at Teachers College, Columbia University in the 1950s – where Dewey’s legacy remained a powerful one. But it also continued during his career at Southern Illinois University where he collaborated in compiling and editing the collected works of John Dewey.

Excerpt from Moral Education in School and Home Though there is universal agreement that moral education is the supreme objective in public-school work, the literature dealing with this aspect of the work is not very extensive. Of the few books that have been written, the writer has not seen one that undertakes to analyze the possibilities for moral instruction or training in the everyday activities of the school. It seemed to the writer, therefore, that there is a distinct place for such a book in teachers' reading circles and in normal school and other courses for teacher-training. The writing of this book was undertaken, however, with a full appreciation of the difficulties involved in saying anything helpful to teachers or parents who are concerned with the problem of character-building in school and home. No claim is made for the discovery of any specifics, or any royal roads to the desired goal. Every child presents a new problem. Individual differences among children are so numerous that successful dealing with one is by no means a guarantee of success in dealing with another. Endless study, tact, sympathy, and charity are demanded of every teacher who would direct, guide, lead, or assist a child into the moral life which should be his. On the other hand, there are more elements of likeness than of difference among children. On the side of inheritance they all have instincts, impulses, and a psychophysical organism attuned to a world of stimuli to which they must respond. Is takes a look at the school as a whole as well as the individual teacher and the subject which is taught. Bramble and Garrod (cited by Kohlberg, 1979 p.210) define morality as “perspective on life - a set of principles which, applied to given circumstances help to guide one’s actions.” Lacey reveals a similar viewpoint when he defines it as concerning habits, customs and ways of life and the categorization of these into good or bad, right or wrong. He goes on to introduce the concept of a moral principle of which he presents three views: things for which we can be held responsible, a principle which is preferred over other principles and values that are universally accepted and approved. These definitions clearly illustrate one major point: that morality is an integral aspect of life. During the course of one’s lifetime, one is constantly called to act upon principles that have been established and accepted across societies over decades or to act upon one’s own principles in a given situation. The concept of a moral principle then is basic to all human societies and to every individual human being. However, in defining morality one needs to explore the concept in more detail. It is necessary, first of all, to look at what may be considered as moral by the individual, by the society and by different societies. Secondly, one must note that there are values such as honesty, integrity, respect and consideration for others which are fundamental to humanity.
