This book is about you: you in your new role, you as a complex person with strengths and needs – just like your students. It is about the way you think of yourself as well as the children and young people you teach and how you build the relationships you need to have. You have exactly the same issues as your pupils in many ways – pressure to ‘perform’, issues of control, how to get the maximum amount of satisfaction out of your days, and how to make experiences meaningful and worthwhile. This book has been written so that as a new teacher, you might have the best possible chance of being motivated to stay in education, fully involved and passionate about the difference you can make for your pupils and their future. Here you will find suggestions about ways of being in school that enable you to enjoy the interaction both with the students you teach and also with the colleagues who support you. These include: · getting and maintaining credibility in your new role · putting respect into operation · developing student self-awareness and self-control · being aware of and promoting a positive emotional climate in your classroom · dealing with conflict and confrontation in ways which do not undermine your sense of self and purpose · seeing difficulties as part of the challenge, not the reason to fear coming through the school gates. Sue Roffey is an educational psychologist, consultant, writer and academic specialising in social, emotional and behavioural issues. She is currently Adjunct Research Fellow at the University of Western Sydney, Australia, and Honorary Lecturer at University College, London.

In the first book she is a teacher, then she will be a librarian, after that a football coach, a minister and so on. Mademoiselle Charlotte is a modern Mary Poppins. The series has been very popular in Canada where it's adapted on television. Mademoiselle Charlotte, the new teacher, is not like the others: she wears a large hat and a crumpled dress that make her look like a scarecrow, and she talks to a rock. The children think she is crazy at first, but soon realize she makes school more fun than ever, getting them to measure the room with cooked spaghetti in maths class, telling fascinating stories about a gorilla and even taking the pupils on at football. The first book in Dominique Demers's popular series, The New Teacher, brilliantly illustrated by Tony Ross, is an entertaining, imaginative and inspiring book that will make you wish you had a teacher just like Mademoiselle Charlotte.

This book seeks to address the question of how the task of teaching mathematics to young children might be better understood. But rather than starting out with a conception of mathematics derived from the many histories mathematics might claim as its own we centre the analysis instead within the social practices that surround the teaching of the subject to children aged four to eleven in English primary schools today. That is, we do not commence with an a priori conception of mathematics and see what people are saying about it. Rather, we start from what people are saying and see where this points. We probe how the desires of society have manifested themselves in a societal decision to teach mathematics and how this decision now shapes that which is called "mathematics". We focus on the operation of the noun "mathematics" and verb "mathematical" and consider how the meanings of these terms derive from the social domain in which they are being used. This extends and develops a conception of how language intervenes in the task of mathematics education presented elsewhere (Brown, 2001). In this present book however, we have a particular focus on trainee and newly qualified teachers, with a view to pinpointing how this conception of mathematics manifests itself in their evolving practices. We question how such teachers with many years of experience as a pupil in school might now re-orient themselves towards the demands of teaching mathematics in schools.
