The domestic linen industry left an indelible imprint on Ulster history. It was introduced by colonists from the north of England in the 17th century, before the arrival of the Huguenots, and encouraged by the landlords to improve their rentals. Earnings from raising flax, spinning yarn and weaving cloth, provided farming families with regular incomes that enabled them to lease small farms and improve marginal land. Continual improvements by Ulster bleachers in the finishing of linens secured for them control of the industry, focussing its development. Exports to Britain first through Dublin and then direct to Liverpool and London, created a merchant class and underpinned the development of Belfast and the provincial market towns. By 1800 Ulster was reckoned to be the most prosperous province in Ireland. It was also the most densely peopled with a population of two million in 1821, almost equal to that of Scotland.

Worldwide pressure on milk prices has resulted from a combination of rising supply and falling demand, partly because of reduced demand from China and a Russian trade ban with the EU. Rapid and wide fluctuations in milk price bring pressure to bear on the UK dairy industry, and farmers have been leaving it in significant numbers in recent years. While there is no single solution to the problems created by these rapid changes in milk prices, it is incumbent on the Government, and Defra in particular, to promote UK dairy produce domestically and in growing export markets. Action to encourage the spread of Producer Organisations, a review of the EU intervention price for milk and clearer regulation on the labelling of dairy products could all assist a struggling industry. The voluntary code of best practice in the dairy industry, introduced after similar price difficulties in 2012, has been adopted by about 85 per cent of dairy producers and welcomed in improving matters as far as it goes. Closer attention is required, however, to the sharpness and frequency of price changes in the dairy market, which affect investment and financial planning. The Groceries Code Adjudicator's role, concerning the relationship between direct suppliers and major retailers, is too restricted to be of assistance to the vast majority of dairy producers, as they are indirect suppliers.

To appreciate the value of the concept of the townland the best course for us is to examine in detail every aspect of one or more of them in terms of our own existence. In local history studies we concentrate on the community that has lived in the townland. This publication will introduce the reader to the documentary sources that survive in archivies and explain how they can be related to the traditions, the artefacts and the oral evidence. It will provide a framework plus numerous worked examples for those with an interest in studying the townland where their ancestors lived. Set as a basis upon which further research could be undertaken this important study begins by choosing eight townlands across Ulster providing a variety of concepts, ideas and observations which will interest the family and local historian alike. Indeed the editors in their introduction observe, that just as local historians, not just those with a special interest in local and family hsitory, to appreciate the significance of the townland in Irish history. The townlands covered in this study include: Forttown, Co. Antrim; Scolboa, Co. Antrim; Ballymagee, Co. Down; Cranfield, Co. Down; Drumskinny 3 & Montiaghroe, Co. Fermanagh; Gallan, Co. Tyrone; Holly-hill, Co. Tyrone; and Owenreagh, Co. Londonderry. In casting their net wide the contributors have managed to build up a picture of townlands across the country and have ensured that this book is representative of the whole of Ulster and not any single part or even merely the eight townlands under study.
