This book engages with critical issues which create a proper understanding of how identities and belonging are imagined and constructed in postcolonial India. The contributors have examined various texts and movies to discuss the implicit communal nature of postcolonial India. The book attempts to discuss the different ways in which India is badly plagued by communal politics and terrorism, and to offer a cogent alternative for creating a strong solidarity among different communities in India.

The Partition Of India In 1947 Caused One Of The Great Human Convulsions Of History. The Statistics Are Staggering. Twelve Million People Were Displaced; A Million Died; Seventy-Five Thousand Women Are Said To Have Been Abducted And Raped; Families Were Divided; Properties Lost; Homes Destroyed. In Public Memory, However, The Violent, Disturbing Realities That Accompanied Partition Have Remained Blanketed In Silence. And Yet, In Private, The Voices Of Partition Have Never Been Stilled And Its Ramifications Have Not Yet Ended. Urvashi Butalia S Remarkable Book, The Outcome Of A Decade Of Interviews And Research, Looks At What Partition Was Intended To Achieve, And How It Worked On The Ground, And In People S Lives. Pieced Together From Oral Narratives And Testimonies, In Many Cases From Women, Children And Dalits-Marginal Voices Never Heard Before-And Supplemented By Documents, Reports, Diaries, Memoirs And Parliamentary Records, This Is A Moving, Personal Chronicle Of Partition That Places People, Instead Of Grand Politics, At The Centre. These Are The Untold Stories Of Partition, Stories That India Has Not Dared To Confront Even After Fifty Years Of Independence.

Politics Of The Other In India And China written by Lion Koenig and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-02-22 with Social Science categories.

The social sciences have been heavily influenced by modernization theory, focusing on issues of economic growth, political development and social change, in order to develop a predictive model of linear progress for developing countries following a Western prototype. Under this hegemonic paradigm of development the world tends to get divided into simplistic binary oppositions between the ‘West’ and the ‘rest’, ‘us’ and ‘them’ and ‘self’ and ‘other’. Proposing to shift the discussion on what constitutes the ‘Other’ as opposed to the ‘Self’ from philosophy and cultural studies to the social sciences, this book explores how the structural asymmetries existing between Western discourses and the realities of the non-Western world manifest themselves in the ideas, institutions and socio-political practices of India and China, and in how far they shape the social scientist’s understanding of their discipline in general. It provides a counter-narrative by revealing the relativity of geographies, and by showing that the conventional presentation of core elements of the Asian socio-political set-up as ‘aberrations’ from the Western models fails to acknowledge their inherent strategic character of adapting Western concepts to meet local requirements. Drawing on multiple disciplines, concepts and contexts in India and China, the book makes a valuable contribution to the theory and practice of politics, as well as to International and Asian Studies.

The clouds are moving ecstatically from Kashi to Mathura and the sky will remain covered with dense clouds as long as there is Krishna in Braj. These lines were composed by Mohsin Kakorvi, a Muslim poet, to celebrate not Lord Krishna's birthday but that of the Prophet Muhammad. Awadh, the author's birthplace, was steeped in this sort of syncretism in which Islam and Hinduism complemented and celebrated each other and Urdu culture merged with Awadhi and Brajbhasha. Sadly, this glorious culture has been systematically destroyed over the past century. In many ways, Awadh stood for everything that independent India could have become, a land in which people of different faiths co-existed peacefully and created a culture that drew upon the best that each community had to offer. Instead, what we have today is a pale shadow of the harmony that once existed. Everywhere there are incidents of sectarian murder, communal propaganda and divisive politics. And there seems to be no stopping the forces that are destroying the country. In this remarkable book, which is partly a memoir and partly an exploration of the various deliberate and inadvertent acts that have contributed to the othering of the 180 million Muslims in India, Saeed Naqvi looks at how the divisions between Muslims and Hindus began in the modern era. The British were the first to exploit these divisions between the communities in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In the run-up to Independence, and its immediate aftermath, some of India's greatest leaders including Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Vallabhbhai Patel, and others only served to drive the communities further apart. Successive governments
