This novel begins with a riveting historical fiction Cold war prologue illustrated in the 1970s. Reginald Remington the first was on a CIA mission in Crimea when he stumbled upon the enigma. Unfortunately, he had only seconds to photograph it before fleeing from Russian soldiers. With photographed evidence of a KGB nuclearized suitcase bomb in hand, he became a legend in Washington D.C. Especially after he dies in the failed assassination attempt on President Regan. Heartbroken over the sudden loss of his father and wife, Reginald Remington II—Rex’s father dedicates his life to telling conspiracy theories from his hotel bar—The Spyglass Inn on the Oregon Coast. When his father is found dead in his suite, Rex suspects his little sister has a relationship with her kidnapper—a weapons dealer named Ashaar, who he plays a high stakes game of cat and mouse as he leads Rex on high-speed RV chases and UAV shootouts. With avenging his father’s killers, saving his sister and the city of San Francisco all on the line, the former Navy Seal named after his grandfather battles Ashaar by hacking databases and controlling his drones with his digital bionic eye. Ashaar has not only kidnapped Rex’s sister, but remotely holding the entire City of San Francisco hostage with a hijacked containership and an all too familiar dirty bomb. Unless the DEA returns a drug kingpin’s money to bitcoin and releases him from prison, that is...

The true story of the Mau Mau rebellion of 1952-60 in Kenya, told for the first time This book tells for the first time the story of the dirty war the British fought in Kenya, in the run-up to the country's independence in 1964. In 1952, after years of tension and bitterness, the grievances of the Gikuyu people of central Kenya exploded into open rebellion. Only 32 European settlers died in the subsequent fighting, but more than 1,800 African civilians, over 3,000 African police and soldiers, and 12,000 Mau Mau rebels were killed. Between 1953 and 1956 Britain sent over a thousand Kenyans to the gallows, often on trumped up or non-existent charges. Meanwhile 70,000 people were imprisoned in camps without trial for between two and six years. David Anderson provides a full and convincing account of a war in which all sides behaved badly, and therefore few of the combatants can be either fully excused, or blamed. These events are still within living memory, and eye-witness testimonies provide the backbone of this controversial story.

Eye of the Whale is a mystery novel in which migrating gray whales, those gentle giants of the Pacific, attract a highly respected university professor to a sleepy lagoon on the western shores of Mexico, a lagoon only recently saved from a massive development project. A nearly fatal attack on his daughterOs life and the search for the whereabouts of the professor leads the reader on a dangerous chase in which the hunters become the hunted when the conspiracy Ñ an insidious plot of remorseless revenge Ñ is uncovered. At times poignant, the characters portray events that are not entirely fictional. In addition to its relevance to an environmental issue of world wide interest, the story serves to alert the peoples of Mexico and the United States to a danger of which many are unaware.

Graham Dalby’s book opens inside Windsor Castle at the ‘Ball of The Century’ in 2000, when he drops so many names it’s hard to keep up. He then takes us through his precariously dangerous childhood from Nigeria, Singapore, and Hong Kong, where he served for a short time as a Police Inspector. The remainder of the book is Dalby’s fast-paced life of Classical Music and Jazz and Swing and is a case-book study on how to manage to quaff Champagne belonging to the rich and famous. The style is old school Wodehouse/Waugh but the historical interpolations keep the reader in the realms of reality and fact. An incredible story of great anecdotes, laughter, and some tears – but mostly Music, Champagne and Laughter.

Indians In Kenya written by Sana Aiyar and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-06 with History categories.

Working as merchants, skilled tradesmen, clerks, lawyers, and journalists, Indians formed the economic and administrative middle class in colonial Kenya. In general, they were wealthier than Africans, but were denied the political and economic privileges that Europeans enjoyed. Moreover, despite their relative prosperity, Indians were precariously positioned in Kenya. Africans usually viewed them as outsiders, and Europeans largely considered them subservient. Indians demanded recognition on their own terms. Indians in Kenya chronicles the competing, often contradictory, strategies by which the South Asian diaspora sought a political voice in Kenya from the beginning of colonial rule in the late 1890s to independence in the 1960s. Indians’ intellectual, economic, and political connections with South Asia shaped their understanding of their lives in Kenya. Sana Aiyar investigates how the many strands of Indians’ diasporic identity influenced Kenya’s political leadership, from claiming partnership with Europeans in their mission to colonize and “civilize” East Africa to successful collaborations with Africans to battle for racial equality, including during the Mau Mau Rebellion. She also explores how the hierarchical structures of colonial governance, the material inequalities between Indians and Africans, and the racialized political discourses that flourished in both colonial and postcolonial Kenya limited the success of alliances across racial and class lines. Aiyar demonstrates that only by examining the ties that bound Indians to worlds on both sides of the Indian Ocean can we understand how Kenya came to terms with its South Asian minority.

One woman’s inspiring true story of an unlikely alliance to stop the atrocities of a warlord, proving that there is no limit to what we can do, even in the face of unspeakable injustice and impossible odds “This compelling and inspiring book beautifully moves each of us to take action to help the most vulnerable among us.”—Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu Late one night in the summer of 2010, Shannon Sedgwick Davis, a lawyer, human rights advocate, and Texas mom to two young boys, first met a Ugandan general to discuss an unconventional plan to stop Joseph Kony, a murderous warlord who’d terrorized communities in four countries across Central and East Africa. For twenty-five years, Kony and his Lord’s Resistance Army had killed over a hundred thousand people, displaced millions, and abducted tens of thousands of children, forcing them to become child soldiers. After Sedgwick Davis met with survivors and community leaders, aid workers and lawmakers, it was clear that the current international systems were failing to protect the most vulnerable. Guided by the strength of her beliefs and convictions, Sedgwick Davis knew she had to help other parents to have the same right she had—to go to sleep each night knowing that their children were safe. But Sedgwick Davis had no roadmap for how to stop a violent armed group. She would soon step far outside the bounds of traditional philanthropy and activism and partner her human rights organization, the Bridgeway Foundation, with a South African private military contractor and a specialized unit within the Ugandan army. The experience would bring her to question everything she had previously believed about her role as a humanitarian, about the meaning of justice, and about the very nature of good and evil. In To Stop a Warlord, Shannon Sedgwick Davis tells the story, for the first time, of the unprecedented collaboration she helped build with the aim of finally ending Joseph Kony’s war—and the unforgettable journey on an unexpected path to peace. A powerful memoir that reads like a thriller, this is a story that asks us just how hard we would fight for what we believe in. 100 percent of the author’s net proceeds from this book will go to organizations seeking justice and protection for civilians in conflict zones.
