This book deals with the statistical theory of strongly coupled Coulomb systems. After an elementary introduction to the physics of nonideal plasmas, a presentation of the method of (nonequilibrium) Green's functions is given. On this basis, the dielectric, thermodynamic, transport, and relaxation properties are discussed systematically. Especially, the behavior of bound states in the surrounding plasma (lowering of the ionization energy), the ionization kinetics, and the equation of state of dense partially ionized hydrogen are each carefully investigated. Furthermore, generalized kinetic equations are derived which are also valid for short time scales. They are applied to ultra-fast processes and to plasmas in laser fields.

The book is devoted to the physical properties of nonideal plasma, in which the effects of interparticle interactions are substantial. Such a plasma is usually compressed so strongly that it is called dense plasma. Interest in plasma studies has increased over the last 10 or 15 years, owing to the development of modern technology and sophisticated facilities whose oper ation is based on a high energy density. As a result of a recent sharp increase in the number of experimental and theoretical investigations, much interesting and reliable data on the properties of dense plasma have been obtained. The data are distributed in a rapidly growing number of original publications and reviews. This volume is a systematic treatment of the thermodynamics (ionization equilibrium, particle composition), charge transport properties (especially electric con ductivity), optical properties (peculiarities of continuous and discrete spectra), and collective modes (features and manifestations) of nonideal plasma. Theoretical models are considered along with the experimental data. The book is intended for the wide range of readers, including specialists in plasma physics and various researchers who need knowledge in this field.

The idea for this book originated with the late Igor Vasil 'evich Kurchatov. He suggested to the author the need for a comprehen sive presentation of the fundamental ideas of plasma physics with out c'omplicated mathematics. This task has not been an easy one. In order to clarify the physical nature of plasma phenomena with out recourse to intricate mathematical expressions it is neces sary to think problems through very carefully. Thus, the book did not come into being by inspiration, but required a considerable ef fort. The aim of the book is to provide a beginning reader with an elementary knowledge of plasma physics. The book is primar ily written for engineers and technicians; however, we have also tried to make it intelligible to the reader whose knowledge ofphys ics is at the advanced-freshman level. To understand the book it is also necessary to have a working knowledge of electricity and magnetism of the kind available in present-:day programs in junior colleges. This book is not intended for light reading. It is designed for the reader for whom plasma physics will be a continuing in terest. We have confidence that such a reader will want to broad en his knowledge by consulting more specialized literature. Thus, we not only include simple expressions but also special important terms.

Physics Of Non Equilibrium Plasmas written by V. M. Lelevkin and has been published by Elsevier Science & Technology this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Science categories.

This book deals with the physics of low temperature plasmas of atomic and molecular gases. Several diagnostic methods for nonequilibrium plasma are described. The relevant elementary processes governing the kinetics and transport of atomic and chemically active molecular plasmas are discussed and numerical models of plasmas aimed at systematically solving MHD-equations are also presented. Intended for use by scientists and engineers active in various fields of low-temperature plasma physics, this book is also suitable for teachers and students at pre- and postgraduate level. In chapter 1 general problems of the elementary physics of plasma are considered and the principal ideas relating to plasma properties are given. In chapter 2 the principles which form the basis of atomic and molecular spectra radiated by a plasma are briefly described. Chapter 3 reviews experimental material associated with the peculiarities of molecular excitation processes in nonequilibrium low-temperature plasma. In chapter 4 a number of problems related to the technique and methods of spectroscopy are considered. Chapter 5 presents experimental material gained from studying the peculiarities of molecular excitation spectra from low-pressure gas discharges and describes diagnostics for nonequilibrium chemically active plasma. In chapter 6 the problems of mathematical modeling of equilibrium plasma in arcs, microwave and optical discharges are analyzed. In chapter 7, a theoretical description of nonequilibrium plasma in electrical arcs, microwave and radio-frequency discharges based on two-temperature approximation of the plasma parameters is offered. Chapter 8 presents a detailed case-study on the transport and excitation of a magnetized plasma of intermediate electron density. Several diagnostic techniques and models introduced in earlier chapters are used to obtain information on plasma properties.

The aim of this book is the pedagogical exploration of the basic principles of quantum-statistical thermodynamics as applied to various states of matter – ranging from rare gases to astrophysical matter with high-energy density. The reader will learn in this work that thermodynamics and quantum statistics are still the concepts on which even the most advanced research is operating - despite of a flood of modern concepts, classical entities like temperature, pressure, energy and entropy are shown to remain fundamental. The physics of gases, plasmas and high-energy density matter is still a growing field and even though solids and liquids dominate our daily life, more than 99 percent of the visible Universe is in the state of gases and plasmas and the overwhelming part of matter exists at extreme conditions connected with very large energy densities, such as in the interior of stars. This text, combining material from lectures and advanced seminars given by the authors over many decades, is a must-have introduction and reference for both newcomers and seasoned researchers alike.

Introduction to Plasma Physics is the standard text for an introductory lecture course on plasma physics. The text’s six sections lead readers systematically and comprehensively through the fundamentals of modern plasma physics. Sections on single-particle motion, plasmas as fluids, and collisional processes in plasmas lay the groundwork for a thorough understanding of the subject. The authors take care to place the material in its historical context for a rich understanding of the ideas presented. They also emphasize the importance of medical imaging in radiotherapy, providing a logical link to more advanced works in the area. The text includes problems, tables, and illustrations as well as a thorough index and a complete list of references.
