The aim of this book is to introduce the medical student, recent medical graduates involved in postgraduate training and physicians in practice to the role of the platelet in physiology and disease. It is not intended to be an encyclopaedic review of all the literature over the past few decades, but largely represents a personal account, and although resultant prejudices occur, an attempt has been made to emphasize to the reader areas of doubt, and point the way to other sources which may explore these questions more fully in selected references at the end of each chapter. I acknowledge the help of my secretaries, Ms Carolyn Harvey and Mrs Marjorie Brown without whom the book would never have been started, let alone completed. Some illustrations and figures were made by Mr W. Shepherd of Monash University and Ms A. Leaman of the Alfred Hospital. I am indebted to Mrs E. Hagon who read and corrected a number of the chapters, and for the constant help through discussion and debate with my two close collaborators in research, Dr Margaret Howard and Dr Sharron pfueller. Dr Siew Choong, Mrs Maureen Broadway and Ms Ilona Lakatos documented the methods used in our laboratory to study platelets as outlined in the Appendix.

The Platelet Amine Storage Granule presents a comprehensive examination of the dense granule of human platelets and the development of dense granule precursors in megakaryocytes. Fundamental aspects addressed in the book include a description of the amine-nucleotide storage complex, the process of granule secretion (with focus on inositol phosphate metabolism), modulation of secretion by epinephrine, and a description of platelet storage pool disease. The book's broad coverage of the topic makes it a valuable resource to hematologists, cell biologists, platelet biologists, medical and veterinary geneticists, neurobiologists, endocrinologists, physiologists, and pharmacologists.

The Platelets: Physiology and Pharmacology is a critical review of the basic platelet systems, methodologic critiques, and platelet involvement in major disease states. This book is composed of 20 chapters that specifically deal with the physiology and biochemistry of the platelet system, along with possibilities for, and consequences of, pharmacologic manipulation. The opening chapters examine the basic processes of platelet aggregation and adhesion. These topics are followed by discussions on the types and functions of platelet a-granule proteins; the aspects of adenine nucleotide levels, regulation, and storage; and receptors for catecholamines and consequences of their agonism. Other chapters are devoted to the metabolism of arachidonic acid, its manipulation, consequences, and metabolite receptors. The discussion then shifts to the second-messenger entities, specifically calmodulin, calcium, and cyclic adenosine monophosphate. A chapter presents the comparisons of man and commonly used laboratory animals concerning platelet behavior variability. Another chapter looks into the use and appropriateness of the use of platelets as models of neurons, with a special emphasis on serotonergic neurons. The remaining chapters contain critical reviews of platelet involvement in diabetes, hypertension and peripheral vascular disease, atherogenesis/atherosclerosis, and ischemic heart disease. These chapters also include specific techniques for platelet analysis, including lumiaggregometry, eicosanoid measurements, and serotonin uptake and release. This book is an invaluable source for pharmacologists, biochemists, researchers, and clinicians who are interested in platelet involvement in disease.

Platelets In Cardiovascular Disease written by Deepak L. Bhatt and has been published by Imperial College Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Medical categories.

Platelets in Cardiovascular Disease provides an in-depth and current coverage of relevant platelet biology and antiplatelet therapy that is in clinical use today and potentially for the future. The book provides a succinct overview of the critical role of platelets in cardiovascular medicine. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality worldwide, and recent research has found that the platelet is central to the genesis of heart attacks and stroke as well as many of the complications of angioplasty and bypass surgery. An explosion of knowledge of the biology of platelets has established their important role in the formation of blood clots and, perhaps more intriguingly, their role as inflammatory cells. This growth in information has been paralleled by the development of several drugs that can interfere with platelet action and thereby improve patient outcomes. Indeed, several antiplatelet drugs already in development may ultimately lead to marked advances in both the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease. Drawing upon a panel of international experts, Platelets in Cardiovascular Disease delivers a concise yet thorough review of the major developments in antiplatelet therapy. Practicing clinicians as well as those involved in the development of new antithrombotic therapies will find the book interesting and useful. Sample Chapter(s).
