Environmental problems and their impact are of growing relevance within the current debate about non-traditional security. This book analyses these security issues and develops them from a theoretical perspective by focusing on environmental security. The empirical case study the book presents focuses on deforestation in Indonesia. It reveals the impacts and consequences of recurring forest fires, which are often started intentionally, on and for individuals, the Indonesian state, the regional level and the global level. Based on set theoretical concepts, the book analyses how environmental destruction is affecting the various aforementioned levels, how they are handling it, and what strategies are being devised and how they can be evaluated. This study will appeal to researchers and lecturers in political science, environmental studies and Indonesian studies, as well as those involved in environmental politics and environmental protection.

Indonesia has been remarkably successful in achieving its development objectives over the past 25 years. Although it is still a low-income country, its tradition of sound economic management has laid the foundations for continued progress in the decades ahead. As the Indonesian government formulates its second long-term development plan, issues of environmental quality and sustainability raise new concerns. This report examines environmental issues, assesses their implications for the achievement of development goals, and suggests an action plan that would help to ensure that those goals will be met. The analysis of current environmental conditions and trends and of the likely impact of future growth leads to three main conclusions: - Future growth will depend increasingly on Indonesia's stock of key natural resources and the sustainability of critical ecosystems. -The industrial sector will continue to expand in urban areas, where growing congestion and industrial pollution pose an immediate threat to health and human welfare. This will eventually lead to negative effects on the economy. -As a result of rapid growth, environment- related issues of equity among the population will become increasingly important.

Through a series of case studies the authors explore the coalescence of social forces around environmental issues, the process of alliance formation, and the role of state institutions, media and NGOs in the complex political battles over resource allocation. The volatile tensions between the winners and losers in this struggle for the environment will make Southeast Asia a focus of increased attention.

. . . an important addition to the small, but growing, published literature on the development of environmental law in developing countries. It will be of interest to academics and those involved in law development in Indonesia and the other developing countries. Jennifer Mohamed-Katerere, Journal of Environmental Law This book asks whether environmental law and policy in developed countries can be successfully transferred to developing countries. It questions whether developing countries are indeed ready and able to implement new ideas from the developed world, such as the integration of environmental law, and use of market-oriented instruments. The authors draw insights from the case of Indonesia, where they have experience of drafting environmental legislation, and which is itself in the early stages of development. Through these insights they seek to understand why environmental law that has been well developed in theory, can in practice be difficult to monitor and adequately enforce. Indeed, a further question central to the book is why developing environmental law does not necessarily result in an efficient environmental policy. Taking a comparative perspective, and using a multi-faceted methodology that draws on constitutional and administrative law, human rights law, criminal and liability law and international law, as well as law and economics, the authors conclude with an outline of some of the lessons that can be learnt by other jurisdictions seeking to develop environmental law. Lawyers, environmental engineers and social scientists involved in environmental law and policy in developing countries will find much to interest them in this book, as will those concerned with development studies or with a particular interest in the case of Indonesia.

Governance Politics And The Environment written by Maria Francesch-Huidobro and has been published by Institute of Southeast Asian Studies this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-07-09 with Nature categories.

In the past two decades, research on environmental issues in East and Southeast Asian countries has mainly focused on existing institutional mechanisms of environmental management, the establishment of new environmental management structures, the introduction of incentives to improve natural capital and foster environmental protection, and the culture of environmental or "green" groups. Virtually no rigorous research has been directed into the nature and significance of the existing relationship between government and civil society in individual country studies, with specific reference to the environmental policy sector, or into how this relationship may be evolving. This book explores this connection in Singapore, and what causes it to evolve, through three case narratives. Its rationale is to address this gap in the literature from a "governance theory" perspective that focuses on state adaptation to the external environment and new forms of coordination and collaboration between government and civil society to tackle new societal problems. The application of the "governance theory" approach to specific case studies is itself a topic that deserves much greater study than what it has so far received.

Global Civil Society And Global Environmental Governance written by Ronnie D. Lipschutz and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-11-01 with Religion categories.

What will it take to protect the global environment? In this book, Ronnie D. Lipschutz argues that neither world government nor green economics can do the job. Governmental regulations often are resisted by those whose behavior they are intended to change, and markets—even green ones—look to profits more than to protection. What will be needed, Lipschutz believes, is not global management but political action through community- and place-based organizations and projects. People acting together locally can have a cumulative impact on environmental quality that is significant, long lasting, and widespread. The comparative case studies of environmental activism in Northern California, Hungary, and Indonesia (the latter written by Judith Mayer) illustrate one of the central premises of this book: that local action is linked increasingly to globe-spanning networks of knowledge and practice, in what Lipschutz calls global civil society. The result is a system of governance that is both local and global, to which states and international organizations are turning increasingly for help and advice.
