This white paper is part of a series that promotes knowledge about language technology and its potential. It addresses educators, journalists, politicians, language communities and others. The availability and use of language technology in Europe varies between languages. Consequently, the actions that are required to further support research and development of language technologies also differ for each language. The required actions depend on many factors, such as the complexity of a given language and the size of its community. META-NET, a Network of Excellence funded by the European Commission, has conducted an analysis of current language resources and technologies. This analysis focused on the 23 official European languages as well as other important national and regional languages in Europe. The results of this analysis suggest that there are many significant research gaps for each language. A more detailed expert analysis and assessment of the current situation will help maximise the impact of additional research and minimize any risks. META-NET consists of 54 research centres from 33 countries that are working with stakeholders from commercial businesses, government agencies, industry, research organisations, software companies, technology providers and European universities. Together, they are creating a common technology vision while developing a strategic research agenda that shows how language technology applications can address any research gaps by 2020.

Against the backdrop of social media and internet use and their impact on communication, those working with minority (or autochthonous) heritage languages, including teachers, language activists and planners and researchers, are reassessing the media, language policy and teaching practices which they had previously applied to stem the tide of language shift towards majority languages. The languages examined in this book are still spoken by a considerable number of speakers and enjoy varying and varied forms of institutional, legal, financial and ideological support. While their overall numbers of speakers are declining, their importance for identity construction and commodification processes continues to increase. This book addresses issues including the potential for a shift from a focus on oral to written practices; the rise of new communities of practice and communicative domains; and the need for resulting shifts in language policy and teaching methods.

Brazil And The Emergence Of A Digital Lusosphere written by Valnora Leister and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-15 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
This book maps how Brazil and the network of Portuguese-speaking countries—the “Lusosphere”—are using digital technologies in new ways to expand opportunities at all levels of society. From a diverse range of perspectives across the Portuguese-speaking world, contributors to this volume explore such questions as the capability of information technologies to encourage social inclusion in the face of economic inequality, the kinds of cultural values that may replace those of the scarcity-based industrial era, and the potential emergence of a virtual world order based on soft power, given the failures of hard power alternatives. This book explores how digital linkages between Brazil and physically-separated Portuguese-speaking communities are influencing the arts, creative industries, sports, learning, business, and cultural evolution for hundreds of millions of Portuguese-speaking people on five continents. At a time of escalating calls in Europe and North America to close borders and build walls, Brazil and the Emergence of a Digital Lusosphere charts alternatives that offer inspiration and practical paths toward a more inclusive world.

International Heritage written by Rodrigo Christofoletti and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-01-06 with Social Science categories.
This book celebrates decades of safeguarding cultural heritage and reckons with reconfigurations and shifts that have shaped the field and understandings of it. The author reflects on a career of safeguarding heritage, offering perspectives from the positions of consumer, researcher, educator, and communicator and at a range of scales, from local-level debates to macro-level perspectives on the role of heritage preservation in international relations. The book situates heritage preservation in the context of soft power and the international system and examines how it intersects with cultural diplomacy. These interrelationships crystalize in the illicit trafficking of cultural goods, inspiring reflections on private and common goods, interoperability, and decoloniality. Grounded in nuanced understandings of "world heritage" and "heritage of humanity", the author critically examines the foundation, trajectory, and remit of UNESCO and highlights cases of cultural and natural heritage, language, and tourism. These discussions in turn inform treatments of two timely topics: intangible heritage of and for refugees and the treatment of statues and symbols of colonizers. By integrating diverse themes that are frequently treated independently, International Heritage: New Approaches, Old Concerns is a resource for researchers and practitioners looking to understand the foundations, current debates, and imminent challenges facing communities that aim to safeguard global cultural heritage.
