In examining the phenomenon of quoting from multiple angles, The Pragmatics of Quoting Now and Then offers a fresh view on the forms, functions and usage of quoting as a meta-communicative act in various forms of old (printed) and new (electronically mediated) communication, setting it apart from (seemingly) related acts like repeating or referring. Recent interest in the formal (copy-paste quoting) and ethical (quoting as plagiarizing) aspects of quoting has been gaining considerable momentum in linguistics (and other disciplines), predominantly fuelled by enormous technological progress and the impact on both the procedure of quoting itself and its appraisal in public discourse. Embracing a broad, interdisciplinary perspective, the authors pay special tribute to the inherent complementarity of both synchronic and diachronic perspectives. With contributions pinpointing the formal and functional evolution of quoting and tracing trends in linguistic variation, this volume brings together interpersonal pragmatics, sociolinguistics, historical, cognitive and text linguistics as well as cultural studies. In this way, the present title provides a more comprehensive and integral understanding of the nature of quoting.

The studies offer new insights into historical and present-day corpus pragmatics by identifying and exploring features of orality in a variety of registers. For readers who are new to the field, the range of approaches will provide a helpful overview; for readers who are already familiar with the field, the volume will shed light on the complexity of factors such as register, sociolinguistic variability and language attitude, thus making it a useful resource and stepping stone for further exploration. This collection breaks new ground in police communication research. It involves the first instance of the same dataset being analysed from different theoretical and methodological perspectives as well as providing original and detailed insights into both monolingual and bilingual UK police interviews and US police interrogations of suspects. The topics include the role of metacommunication and its appropriate vs. inappropriate use in evidence elicitation, assessment of mitigation vs. aggravation strategies in questioning, identification of right vs. wrong empathy and the importance of getting it right, effects on complexity in police speak on quantity and quality of information obtained, and the multiple challenges that affect interpreter-mediated exchanges in this highly sensitive communicative context. All levels of linguistic meaning are covered, words, constructions, sentences, discourse, and contextualised within psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic knowledge about inferencing, emotion, and social interaction. This holistic approach helps us explain where, when and why communicative conflicts arise in this sensitive context and propose concrete practical solutions to resolve them. This volume will be useful and relevant to both academics, students and researchers, and to professionals in the domains of language and the law. Originally published as special issue of Pragmatics and Society 10:1 (2019).

Not My Words written by Ofer Feldman and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-01-08 with Political Science categories.

This edited collection of studies brings together a number of internationally distinguished scholars to provide a comprehensive and detailed examination of the usage and function of quotations and citations in political rhetoric in a variety of countries around the globe, including North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Chapters consider quotations and citations as important (at times unavoidable) elements of argumentative and persuasive speech (and writing). They examine quotations, on the one hand, as forms of a direct way of providing evidence to support the speaker’s (or writer’s) arguments, statements, or assumptions, that their speech (or writing) is within an already established larger claim, enabling them to say (or write) something about it with authority. On the other hand, chapters maintain that quotations and citations can be also used as a powerful device to refute them. That is, the speaker will quote something in order to knock it down i.e., use it as a springboard to express doubts regarding the original utterance, to criticize, disagree, or ridicule the speaker, or to present the contradictory position. Contributions to this volume explore aspects related to the manner such quotations take place, the forms and genres of rhetoric that they enable, and their effect, as an important topic for political and social psychologists, as well as for communication and linguistics researchers who are interested in the study of the nature of contemporary politics. With only a handful studies systematically considering such aspects of political rhetoric and behavior, this anthology aims to bridge the gap in this area’s scholarly knowledge, while delving into central features of political communication and persuasion and their effect in present-day societies.

Pragmatics of Fiction provides systematic orientation in the emerging field of studying pragmatics with/in fictional data. It provides an authoritative and accessible overview of this versatile new field in its methodological and theoretical richness. Giving center stage to fictional language allows scholars to review key concepts in sociolinguistics such as genre, style, voice, stance, dialogue, participation structure or features of orality and literariness. The contributors explore language as one of the creative tools to craft story worlds and characters by drawing on concepts such as regional, social and ethnic language variation, as well as multilingualism. Themes such as emotion, taboo language or impoliteness in fiction receive attention just as the challenges of translation and dubbing, the creation of past and future languages, the impact of fictional language on language change or the fuzzy boundaries of narratives. Each contribution, written by a leading specialist, gives a succinct, representative and up-to-date overview of research questions, theories, methods and recent developments in the field.
