Excerpt from The Process of Historical Proof There are some subjects that belong by equal right to different and independent departments of knowledge. The Christian Evidences are of this kind; for while they form an inseparable branch of theological study, they are manifestly included also in the province of general history. He, therefore, who devotes himself to the knowledge of whatever relates to the past condition of mankind, is free to examine these evidences - nay, he is bound to examine them - apart from their connection with religion. This is the ground on which I present the following pages to the reader. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of the Transmission of Ancient Books to Modern Times: Together With the Process of Historical Proof There is yet another reason that has induced me to retrench, in this Reprint, much that, thirty years ago, might seem proper to the treatment of the subject. In this course of time a great change has had place upon the field of argument touching Christianity and its origin Although disbelief may have spread widely of late, the argument concerning Christianity has been nar rowed on every side of it. Much that, a while ago, was thought to need the production of proof. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of the Transmission of Ancient Books to Modern Times: With the Process of Historical Proof Even in relation to those works of genius whose value consists in their intrinsic merits, and which would not be robbed of their beau ties though discovered to be spurious, an assurance of their genuineness is felt by every reader to conduce greatly to the pleasure they impart. But a much stronger feeling natu rally leads us to demand this assurance In the perusal of works which profess to have reality only for their matter. - Truth is the very subject' of History. - Satisfactory evi dence, therefore, of the integrity of its records may well be deemed an indispensable prelimi nary to a course of study in that department of knowledge. The Rules Of Evidence As Applicable To The Credibility Of History Classic Reprint written by William Forsyth, Jr. and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-09 with Literary Collections categories.

Excerpt from The Rules of Evidence as Applicable to the Credibility of History To believe without any evidence at all is irrational; but to disbelieve against sufficient evidence is equally irrational. By sufficient evidence I mean such an amount of proof as satisfies and unprejudiced mind beyond all reasonable doubt. Mathematical truth alone admits of demonstration. All other kinds of truth can only be proved by probabilities, which vary in an almost infinite degree, from the faintest kind of presumption to what is called moral certainty, which is accepted as practically equivalent to demonstration. Upon evidence depends all our knowledge of past events; and it is astonishing how little is often sufficient to satisfy us. The mere fact of its being written in a book is enough to make no inconsiderable number of readers believe in the truth of a statement, without reflecting whether the author had or had not the means of ascertaining the truth; for if he had, we may be justified in putting faith in his honesty; but if he had not, his own assertion is worth nothing. By proof I mean anything that serves, either mediately or immediately, to convince the mind of the truth or falsehood of a fact or proposition; and proofs differ according to the subject-matter of the thing to be proved. One of the most common, and, at the same time, most satisfactory mode of proof as to things which do not fall within the experience of the senses is Induction, by which is meant the inference drawn from proved or admitted facts. It is for instance by induction that the general facts of Natural History are proved. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Historical Criticism of Documents External Criticism is complete. It remains by means of Internal Criticism to decide the value of the evidence contained in the source, to interpret the latter, and by means of this evidence establish the historical facts of which we are in search. These facts are then grouped, gaps are filled in by construo tive reasoning, and the whole is presented in such a form as to render intelligible the process and facts of historical development. Excerpt from Historical Criticism and the Old Testament We do not even differ as to the use of terms, for we, too, prefer to avoid the word myth.' Further, the reviewer seems to think that we do not admit the historicity Of the Patriarchs, from the time Of Abraham. This is quite contrary to our clearly expressed Opinion. But if popular legend developed that history in its own peculiar way, as Herr Vetter grants it did, are not such stories as that of the wife of Lot, and the origin of Moab and Ammon, typical instances of the process? Excerpt from Corrected Proofs IT is a trite saying that the Preface is a book wright's horror - but its very triteness is proof of its truth - and that truth is excuse for its iteration here. In the body of the work, the Author addresses the world generally - the Preface is particularly inscribed to the reader - writing it is like going through a set form, in accordance with rules of etiquette - or through a difiicult concerted piece, where, to be excellent, is only to be tolerable. Any thing below that is a lamentable failure; any thing above it is seldom attained. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Law of Evidence I have, as far as practicable, adhered to one uniform method of arrangement throughout - that of stating: (1) The rules of evidence; (2) the principles upon which they are founded; (3) their various limitations; and (4) the illustrations to the rules. The latter have, for the convenience of the reader, been arranged not only in separate columns according to their admissibility or the reverse, but, wherever. Po'ssible, in pairs, which present analogous facts but different decisions, the contrasted cases being placed side by side at the same height in the page. Excerpt from Cases on the Law of Evidence: Selected and Arranged The chief criticism of this method of instruction is that too much ground has to be covered for the amount of knowledge acquired. This criticism applies with greater force to long cases. In the present volume the cases are short and confined to the points of Evidence involved. All matter contained in the reported cases not pertaining to Evidence has been eliminated. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
