Excerpt from The Psychology of Number and Its Applications to Methods of Teaching Arithmetic In presenting this book on the Psychology of dumber it is believed that a special want is supplied. There is no subject taught in the elementary schools that taxes the teacher's resources as to methods and devices to a greater extent than arithmetic. There is no subject taught that is more dangerous to the pupil in the way of deadening his mind and arresting its development, if bad methods are used. The mechanical side of training must be joined to the intellectual in such a form as to prevent the fixing of the mind in thoughtless habits. While the mere processes become mechanical, the mind should by ever-deepening insight continually increase its power to grasp details in more extensive combinations. Methods must be chosen and justified, if they can be justified at all, on psychological grounds. The concept of number will at first be grasped by the pupil imperfectly. He will see some phases of it and neglect others. Later on he will arrive at operations which demand a view of all that number implies. Each and every number is an implied ratio, but it does not express the ratio as simple number. The German language is fortunate in having terms that express the two aspects of numerical quantity. In "The Psychology of Arithmetic," Edward L. Thorndike offers a groundbreaking exploration of the cognitive underpinnings of mathematical understanding. Drawing on empirical research and experimental psychology, Thorndike analyzes how individuals learn and process numerical concepts, unveiling the intricate relationship between psychological principles and arithmetic proficiency. Written in a clear, methodical style, the book situates itself within the broader context of early 20th-century educational psychology, pushing against the prevailing notions of rote memorization and emphasizing instead the importance of associative learning and problem-solving. His systematic approach provides critical insights into how arithmetical skills develop and are influenced by educational practices. Edward L. Thorndike, an eminent American psychologist known for his pioneering work in educational psychology, was deeply invested in the scientific study of learning processes. His experiences as an educator and researcher led him to scrutinize the methodologies employed in teaching arithmetic, ultimately propelling him to write this seminal work. Thorndike's extensive background in animal behavior and learning theory informed his innovative approach, establishing him as a key figure in bridging psychology and education. This book is highly recommended for educators, psychologists, and anyone interested in the cognitive processes involved in mathematics. Thorndike's insights not only enhance our understanding of arithmetic learning but also provoke critical reflection on the education system itself, making it a timeless resource for improving teaching methodologies.

This volume emerges from a partnership between the American Federation of Teachers and the Learning Research and Development Center at the University of Pittsburgh. The partnership brought together researchers and expert teachers for intensive dialogue sessions focusing on what each community knows about effective mathematical learning and instruction. The chapters deal with the research on, and conceptual analysis of, specific arithmetic topics (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, and fractions) or with overarching themes that pervade the early curriculum and constitute the links with the more advanced topics of mathematics (intuition, number sense, and estimation). Serving as a link between the communities of cognitive researchers and mathematics educators, the book capitalizes on the recent research successes of cognitive science and reviews the literature of the math education community as well.

What is mathematics, and what aspects of it should be taught in schools? How and to whom should it be taught, and how should its understanding be assessed? These questions continue to drive curriculum development, school organization, teaching methods, and research agendas. No one today doubts that mathematics should be taught in our schools, but this was not always so. Mathematics Education Across Time and Place aims to help mathematics teachers, teacher educators, and anyone else interested in mathematics education appreciate the path this discipline has taken through the ages. To understand the historical and social context for schools and the place of mathematics within them, we meet a variety of mathematics educators from different times and places. Though fictional, their lives and social circumstances are based on historical documents and professional sources. They range from ancient Greece to modern Zimbabwe; from Persia to British Columbia; from Islamic Baghdad to revolutionary Paris; from Elizabethan England to twentieth-century New York; and from the rural one-room schools of North America to the modern comprehensive secondary school. By sharing the teachers’ lives, we come to understand how they developed their love for teaching mathematics, and how their work fit into the larger social context of their time.
