Philosophy in America enjoyed a golden age at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries with the flourishing of distinctive and original schools of pragmatism, idealism, and naturalism. These American philosophies shared a family of conceptions of human experience far richer than their contemporary European schools of empiricism and phenomenology. The American conceptions of experience embrace critical and speculative conceptions of reason, presenting decisive alternatives to the Kantian foundationalist project that expressed itself in positivism, analytic philosophy, and phenomenology. During the middle part of the twentieth century these American philosophies were eclipsed by the European schools, however, and philosophy was reduced from the public intellectual roles given it by the likes of William James and John Dewey to a narrow academic practice interesting to few other than academic philosophers. John Edwin Smith, through a long publishing and teaching career at Yale, has championed the rich American conceptions of experience and speculative reason, and it seems that at the end of this century they are returning in triumph. Pragmatism is America's most distinctive philosophy. In the received history, it has been understood as a development of European thought in response to the "American wilderness." A closer examination, however, reveals that the roots and central commitments of pragmatism are grounded in ways of thinking indigenous to North America. It is the purpose of Native Pragmatism to recover this history and in so doing provide the means to re-conceive the scope and potential of American philosophy. Pragmatism has been at best only partially understood by those who focus on its European antecedents. The recovery of the history of pragmatism developed here throws new light on its complex origins and demands a rethinking not only of pragmatism but also of the sources and roles of African American and feminist thought in the development of the American philosophical tradition. Fifty years ago One-Dimensional Man presented Herbert Marcuse's powerful new way of understanding U.S. culture. It was Marcuse who in particular called out this nation's tendencies toward the manipulation and indoctrination of the public mind, and challenged the total administration and closing of its cultural and political worlds. In so doing, the life and theory of Herbert Marcuse has led to what I call a "deprovincialization" of social science and a recovery of philosophy within much of U.S. higher education. Provincialism is a logical fallacy: the tendency to see things only from the point of view of those in charge of our immediate in-groups. This generates an easy, and ultimately specious, loyalty to the local. Marcuse counterposed a cogent multidimensional, proto-multicultural, and Marxist social analysis to the essentially single-dimensional Anglo-American view of the world. Marcuse's efforts aimed at liberating theory from its ascendant forms in the American academy, i.e., the false concreteness of what was becoming its customary empiricism, instrumentalism, and linguistic analysis. His recovery of a broader notion of rationality oriented philosophy anew to genuine societal problems and the amelioration of human suffering.
