Mentoring is the most cost-efficient and sustainable method of fostering and developing talent within your organization. It can be used to stretch talented individuals, power diversity programmes and ensure that knowledge and experience is successfully handed down. As such, the benefits of a mentoring programme are numerous: the mentee receives a helping hand to identify and achieve goals, and the mentor gets the satisfaction of helping others to develop. Organizations offering mentorship gain from improved employee performance and talent retention. Everyone Needs a Mentor explains what mentoring is, what various models there are and how these differ from coaching. It shows you how to make a business case for mentoring and then how to set up, run and maintain your own programme. This fully revised 5th edition of Everyone Needs a Mentor has been revised and updated to include a wealth of international case studies alongside developments in the field such as multinational mentoring, maternity mentoring and the impact of social media on mentoring.

Mentor Myth written by Debby Carreau and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-03 with Business & Economics categories.

Mentors are over-utilized, under-trained and, as studies show, under-deliver. From an employer's perspective, assigning a mentor is often a band-aid to a larger problem. From an employee's perspective, a lack of formal mentorship is seen as a serious, career-inhibiting problem, the equivalent of sailing a boat without a rudder. In The Mentor Myth, Debby Carreau represents this dichotomy, explaining that while a mentor's counsel can be invaluable, it is not the silver bullet human resources professionals often purport it to be. The opinions of a mentor are one data point, one piece in the much more complex game of navigating a career. In fact, the increasing overreliance on mentorship can actually be a hindrance to a successful career. Instead of continually looking outward for career guidance, aspiring professionals must realize that they possess all the tools necessary to take control of their own careers by using their own strengths, capabilities, and visions of success. Through her years of experience consulting, speaking, and writing about career development, Debby has created a comprehensive, easy-to-implement guide for taking ownership of your professional success. Debby begins by helping the reader create a professional roadmap, including how to build a personal brand, project the right amount of confidence, and manage time. She addresses mentors in the context of networks and sponsors, advising the reader how to incorporate outward influences rather than be defined by them.

Kyle Broder has achieved his lifelong dream and is an editor at a major publishing house. When Kyle is contacted by his favorite college professor, William Lansing, Kyle couldn’t be happier. Kyle has his mentor over for dinner to catch up and introduce him to his girlfriend, Jamie, and the three have a great time. When William mentions that he’s been writing a novel, Kyle is overjoyed. He would love to read the opus his mentor has toiled over. Until the novel turns out to be not only horribly written, but the most depraved story Kyle has read. After Kyle politely rejects the novel, William becomes obsessed, causing trouble between Kyle and Jamie, threatening Kyle’s career, and even his life. As Kyle delves into more of this psychopath’s work, it begins to resemble a cold case from his college town, when a girl went missing. William’s work is looking increasingly like a true crime confession. Lee Matthew Goldberg's The Mentor is a twisty, nail-biting thriller that explores how the love of words can lead to a deadly obsession with the fate of all those connected and hanging in the balance.

Excerpt from The Mentor, Vol. 4: June, 1894 Tom's Old habit Of tearing his nightdress, sheets, etc., has been nearly overcome, but an occasional vestige of the propensity shows itself. His teacher writes in her diary: Last night Tom amused himself by pulling the buttons Off his night-gown. After school to-dayi took him to my room, gave him a needle and thread and buttons, and taught him how to sew the buttons on. He surprised me by his apt ness at learning to do this; though he shows aptness in nearly all manual work. Through this little experience Tom must have gained some idea Of what it is to have the punishment fit the crime. The boys of the kindergarten are fond Of Tom and very good to him. Tom returns their affection and shows it prettily at times. \vhen his special friend, Fred, returned from a two days' visit, Tom was upstairs, occupied in bed making. Fred sought him out, gave him a joyful hug and kiss, and then went on to his own duties. Warm-hearted little Tom was so rejoiced at his friend's return that he danced up and down with delight, spelling Fred! Fred! All by himself, long after Fred had gone. In the case of virtual coaching and mentoring (or e-mentoring and ecoaching; or coaching/mentoring by wire—choose your own preferred nomenclature!) there are hundreds, perhaps thousands of programs and initiatives across the world. Yet there is comparatively little in the way of comparison of good practice or academic evaluation of what does and doesn’t work. We found numerous individual case studies but a dearth of empirical research and no significant collection of cases to illustrate the diversity of applications. Virtual Coach, Virtual Mentor provides a wide variety of perspectives on a rapidly growing phenomenon. We hope and intend that it should make a timely and significant contribution to good practice and to encouraging more practitioners and their clients and more organizations to experiment with using electronic media to enrich coaching and mentoring. The view of ecoaching and e-mentoring is firmly one that these new media are less a replacement for traditional face-to-face than an enhancement of learning alliances in general. We see no evidence of fewer face-to-face coaching or mentoring relationships—on the contrary, they continue to become more popular and widespread. Rather, we see that virtual coaching and mentoring both enrich predominantly face-to-face relationships, by connecting partners at times between formal meetings, and open up coaching and mentoring to new audiences and new applications.
