These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside The Road Builders: Look inside the book: And finally, when the large clock down in the office was announcing, with a preliminary rattle and click, that it intended very shortly to strike the half-hour between five and six, the chief pushed back his chair and looked up at his engineers, who were seated about him—Old Van before him on a trunk; Scribner and Young Van beside him on the bed; John Flint, a thin, sallow man, astride the other chair, and Haddon on the floor with his back against the wall. ...“Well, gentlemen, when we got out to the yards, there were our cars in two long lines on parallel tracks, seventy on one track and fifty on another—one thing bothered me, they were broken in four places at street crossings—and on the two next tracks beside them were Charlie’s two engines, steam up and headlights lighted.

Excerpt from The Science of Road Making: Construction and Maintenance of Roads The Romans built all of their roads in perfectly straight lines, up hill and down, at a very great expense, as being absolutely the shortest distance between two points. At a later period in history, it was argued that a road must be winding to be agreeable, and many were so built only for this reason. The modern road builder or engineer in general, ignores any such considerations, and has for his aim only to achieve the most, at the least present and future expense. As regards curves in roads in a hilly or mountainous district, we have then the rules never to make a smaller radius than 20 feet, and that only in extraordinary cases. On roads where long log ging or other wagons may be expected, the smallest radius ought to be 50 or 60 feet; and, in general, 40 - 45 feet is none too much. Excerpt from The Iron Way: A Tale of the Builders of the West The discovery of gold in California aroused the attention of the whole civilized world and caused the migration of vast numbers of people from "the States" to the Pacific Coast. The means of reaching the gold fields were by the long and tedious voyage "around the Horn," by enduring the scarcely lesser hardships of two voyages and overcoming obstacles almost insurmountable in crossing the Isthmus, or by a still more arduous journey of thousands of miles across the continent, traversing great plains, climbing precipitous and rugged mountains, and, parched with thirst, wearily making a journey through desert sands and death valleys, along a forlorn track which may even now be traced by skulls and bones of men and beasts who perished by the way, still whitening in the sun. It is not strange that a people of such enterprise and resources as ours should, under these circumstances, have been impressed with the importance of making a highway across the continent. The Civil War which followed proved the necessity of bringing the people of all sections of the country into closer relations, and made the necessity of building such a highway imperative. Excerpt from Good Roads Year Book, 1917 The public interest in road improvements during the last two years has been steadily growing but it has been largely exhibited in a willingness to vote road bonds and to assume road taxes The use of the funds so made available has apparently not yet given the American public any sustained concern. The reason is not far to seek. It lies 1n the assumption that highway con struction and maintenance require little more than good faith and common sense. Many persons without engineering expe ricuce have been persuaded to acquiesce in methods of work which lead to unnecessary waste. Highway engineers throughout the country have been confronted with the necessity of directing the energies of enthusiastic advocates of better roads along lines at once financially and economically wise. Such educational work has been and still 18 no small task for men so busily engaged in the discharge of their usual duties as are the professional road builders. Excerpt from Good Roads, Construction, Transportation, Maintenance, With Which Is Incorporated the Highway Contractor and Road Builder, Vol. 62: Tests of Impact on Pavements by the Bureau of Public Roads VIII To meet these requirements the designer would refer first to the results of the measurement of motor truck impact. A brief summary of these results is given in Table 4. The table shows the impacts delivered by the rear wheels of trucks of various sizes, variously loaded. And dropped upon the road surface from three different heights. The average impact resulting from a one-fourth inch drop of the rear wheels of a 5-ton truck loaded with 5 tons, as shown, is equivalent to a static load of about lb. Not illustrated. 1905 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VI THE ROAD TO TOTAL WRECK "How's my pony?" said Young Van. "You haven't told me." "I shot him." "Not yours too? Didn't I see you riding Texas this morning? I -- I'm a little hazy about what I have and haven't seen these days." "Yes; Texas pulled through. He's hitched on just behind us." The wagon train, with every barrel full, was drawing slowly toward Mr. Carhart's camp. Young Van and Carhart were riding on the leading wagon, and the former was gazing off dejectedly to the horizon, where he could see a few moving black specks and the gray-yellow line of the grade. "I don't know what you'll think of me, Mr. Carhart," he said, 138 after a time. "I don't seem to be good for much when it comes to real work." "Better forget about it, Gus," the chief replied. "I'm going to. This isn't railroad building." The long line of wagons wound into camp, and Carhart made it his first business to get his assistant undressed and comfortably settled on his cot. It would be a day or so before the young man would be able to resume his work. Then Carhart stepped out, walked part way down the knoll, and looked about him, and became conscious of an unusual stir about the job. Peering out through dusty spectacles, he saw that a party of strangers were coming up the slope toward him. At the head walked Old Van, in boiled shirt and city clothes, with a tall man in frock coat and top hat whom Carhart recognized as Vicepresident Chambers. After them came a party of ladies and one or two young men to whom Tiffany was explaining the methods of construction. It seemed that Mr. Chambers had thought it worth while to adopt Tiffany's suggestion that the vast quantities of dry bones in the desert be gathered up and shipped eastward to be ground up into...
