Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Didactics - English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 2,0, University of Würzburg (Neuphilologisches Institut), course: Linguistics and Teaching English, language: English, abstract: In this work it will be shown what exactly is meant with the term 'contextualization' and what its meanings for language learning and teaching are. A definition of context and contextualization will be the start of this paper. An overview of methods using the ideas of contextualization will follow and the last topic will be the advantages and disadvantages as well as the critics that formed against this movement of language teaching and learning. The paper will close with a short overview about current usage of contextualization in foreign language classrooms, as it is used to a large extend in schools and other institutions as for example the Volkshochschule. Teaching methods differ widely, mostly concerning to what their approach on teaching and learning is and how it is pursued. Methods coming up in the 1970s stated that learning should happen in context, as contextualization is of major importance, when learning a language. This was seen as important in several approaches to learning foreign languages as for example the task based learning approach (TBL) or content and language integrated learning approach (CLIL). This development was a consequence of new research in the field of language acquisition. Beforehand behavioristic approaches and the views they stood for were most important for the developing of teaching and learning models, but as cognitivist views took over contextualization got more and more influential on the matter.

Among the growing number of publications on promoting English as an International Language (EIL), little has been written on the complexities that the EIL paradigm has brought to the teaching and learning of English in the classroom. This edited book seeks to address this deficit in the literature by bringing together narratives of the realities that EIL practitioners encountered in their diverse teaching contexts, including Indonesia, the Pacific islands, USA, and Australia; the struggles, tensions, dilemmas, and quests of living as EIL practitioners in specific teaching contexts and wider English communities in general are all explored in this book. It explores pedagogical practices, understandings, and challenges surrounding the implementation of EIL pedagogy and principles in contexts where English is traditionally described as a second language or foreign language. This book will be of interest to teachers, academics, and research students working in the areas of ELT, critical applied linguistics, EIL, language and identity, and English language teacher education. It can also be used to complement university-level textbooks in these areas. The book provides theoretical and contextual knowledge for practicing teachers and teacher educators seeking to understand and explore the teaching and learning realities of implementing EIL in the classroom.

This book employs the realm of English Language Teaching (ELT) as a discursive point of departure to explore how individuals, groups, entities and institutions apprehend, embrace, deal with, manipulate, problematize and resist glocal flows of people, ideas, information, goods, and technology. It apprehends and attends to tensions arising from the fluidly local-global construction and negotiation of borders of identity and interaction within a diverse array of contexts and English education therein. These tensions, whether conceptual or pedagogical, may arise in and through governmental and institutional policymaking, teacher training, or curriculum and materials development, and in the learning experience both within and beyond the classroom, as teachers and students engage with course content and each other.

This book offers a holistic practitioner and research-based perspective on English Language Teaching and teacher education in difficult circumstances. In addition to extending the current conceptualization of ‘difficult circumstances’ in ELT to include the broader policy issues that may affect ELT in low-to-mid income countries, the book focuses on the challenges faced by practitioners and learners in contexts of confinement, conflict and special education. The chapters in this collection examine the challenges and problems that emerge from the complex current ELT environment, and present examples of contextualized inquiry-based strategies and interventions to address these challenges. Underlining the need to extend the boundaries of the discipline of ELT to include teaching-learning in less privileged contexts, this wide-ranging volume will appeal to students, scholars and practitioners of English Language Teaching.

Contextualizing College ESL Classroom Praxis: A Participatory Approach to Effective Instruction provides pre-service and in-service teachers with a model for engaging in effective instruction with the variety of students encountered in college English as a second language or foreign language classrooms. Along with the model, the text is designed to help readers develop the tools to use it within a participatory approach. This approach, based on the principles of Paulo Freire's critical pedagogy, is combined with multicultural education and the general tenets of a communicative approach to language teaching. From the philosophical to the theoretical to the practical, these strands are combined into a cohesive whole. The underlying premise is that the best way to develop an understanding of a participatory approach is to engage in it. Throughout the book, readers are asked to apply problem-posing--a learning process that begins with naming issues, reflecting on them and possible solutions, and acting upon one's ideas. Questions addressed include: *What is the nature of process over product? *Is a new definition of effective instruction necessary? *What are the factors that can affect second language acquisition? *What do teachers believe about effective language instruction? *What do students believe about effective language instruction? *What makes pedagogy effective? *How do teachers and students relate in the classroom? *What does instruction mean for students? *How can effective praxis be adapted to various contexts? Each chapter includes Pre-Reading Questions, Post-Reading Questions, a topic for a Reflective Journal, and Follow-Up Activities. These provide opportunities to enhance comprehension of the material, to co-construct new knowledge with classmates, and to review personal beliefs and ideas in an effort to modify or reinforce them in one's own developing model for effective language instruction.

This volume is a collection of personal narratives and research findings by English language (ESL/EFL) teachers who found themselves, in one way or another, teaching in various contexts all over the world. The central theme throughout these narratives is how contextual factors played a role in their approach to language teaching in different ways. The contributors reflect on their practices and provide an engaging discussion about how they deal with curriculum and classroom organization issues within the local context. Readers can expect to learn and understand how ESL/EFL teachers in this volume exercise their agency in teaching in a language classroom. These teachers, through their own unique stories and research findings, reflect on how they responded to local contextual factors such as the learning culture, national and school policies, personal beliefs and attitudes towards pedagogy, the sociolinguistic context of teaching, the school culture, and the wider sociopolitical context in which learning and teaching takes place. Since the narrative approach has been placed center stage in teacher education as a method and an objective of inquiry, the contributors adopt the narrative form to reflect and discuss their instructional practice.
