This book features comprehensive qualitative metaphor analyses in US-American college lectures. The author shows that deliberate metaphors fulfill important communicative functions. However, the critical discussion of their identification and application demonstrates problems with 'deliberateness'.

Metaphors are essential to scientists themselves and strongly influence science communication. Through careful analyses of metaphors actually used in science texts, recordings, and videos, this book explores the essential functions of conceptual metaphor in the conduct of science, teaching of science, and how scientific ideas are promoted and popularized. With an accessible introduction to theory and method this book prepares scientists, science teachers, and science writers to take advantage of recent shifts in metaphor theories and methods. Metaphor specialists will find theoretical issues explored in studies of bacteriology, cell reproduction, marine biology, physics, brain function and social psychology. We see the degree of conscious or intentional use of metaphor in shaping our conceptual systems and constraining inferences. Metaphor sources include social structure, embodied experience, abstract or mathematical formulations. The results are sometimes innovative hypotheses and robust conclusions; other times pedagogically useful, if inaccurate, stepping stones or, at worst, misleading fictions. As of January 2023, this e-book is freely available, thanks to the support of libraries working with Knowledge Unlatched.

Professional Generalism In A Hyper Specialised World written by Nektarios Karanikas and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-04-01 with Business & Economics categories.

This book challenges the notion that extreme professional expertise is the only path to success, advocating instead for the concept of 'professional generalism' as a complementary approach. It brings together ideas from various disciplines, offering insights relevant to all professionals, regardless of specialisation. The chapters of the book explore concepts and frameworks that are not typically discussed together in a single work and challenge the reader to test and contextualise them. The book aims to inspire professionals to explore principles beyond their usual scope and to recognise opportunities to integrate concepts from other disciplines into their practice. It encourages readers to consider how different approaches and perspectives can intersect and complement each other, breaking down professional silos and fostering a more interconnected way of thinking. Rather than promoting simplistic or middle-ground solutions, the book emphasises the value of considering diverse perspectives and approaches, recognising that different contexts may require different paradigms. It encourages readers to embrace complexity and diversity, fostering a holistic and nuanced perspective essential for navigating today's interconnected professional landscapes.

This book discusses the underlying metaphors of some important business principles and terms and positive teaching effects from deliberately implanting those metaphors in business lessons. It introduces original metaphors creatively used in live webcast courses which introduce difficult economic concepts to netizens. The deliberate metaphor is considered to represent a new dimension of metaphor, the communicative dimension. The book explores the communicative effect of deliberate metaphors and proves its effectiveness in teaching difficult business concepts. This book explores different uses of deliberate metaphors designed to support the teaching of business concepts and discusses two teaching experiments done to explore their effectiveness. Results showed that a focused design using deliberate metaphors in the lectures improved test performance, while a scattered design using deliberate metaphors used in lectures significantly increased students’ interest in the lectures.

Slowing Metaphor Down written by Gerard J. Steen and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-06-15 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

If thinking can be fast or slow, metaphorical thinking can be fast and slow too. But metaphorical thinking does not occur as often and in the ways that many metaphor scholars today think. Slow metaphorical thinking does mean, however, that we can exert more control over metaphor than has previously been acknowledged. We can even offer resistance to metaphor. Deliberate Metaphor Theory (DMT) claims that there is an essential processing difference between non-deliberate and deliberate metaphor use which can explain all this. This book is the first full account of the DMT model for metaphor comprehension. It presents explicit conceptualization and formal operationalization, and is based on a well-known cognitive-psychological model for all utterance comprehension in discourse. The original three-dimensional model of DMT is here refined into a four-dimensional model, which reveals new research questions and discoveries about the use of metaphor. The book brings together numerous cognitive-scientific insights into metaphor. It has a high degree of interdisciplinary accessibility to all students of metaphor, whether master students, PhDs, post docs, or established academics.

Specialized Knowledge Mediation written by Ekaterina Isaeva and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-03-11 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book provides an integrated approach to cognitive-linguistic mediation, with aims toward the efficiency of knowledge transfer and acquisition. Problems are approached through the prism of cognitive modelling, and mapped to such fields as intercultural and interdisciplinary communication, and second language teaching. The novelty lies in the synergies between linguistics, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, culture, and industry. These fields come together through ontological and metaphorical modelling and the attempts to automate such. This text provides a theoretical background for research on mediation, covering cognitive and communicative perspectives, metaphoricity of terms, and the ontologization of human knowledge. It includes detailed descriptions of methods for different types of cognitive modelling and is intended for students and researchers concerned with terminology, cognitive linguistics, applied linguistics, pragmatics, computational linguistics, literature studies, morphology, syntaxis, and semantics.
