Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Pedagogy - The Teacher, Educational Leadership, grade: PASS, The University of Malaya (LANGUAGE AND LITERACY EDUCATION), language: English, abstract: The purpose of this research is to examine the personal teaching metaphors ofthree Malaysian ESL pre-service teachers and to explore the extent to which sociocultural factors namely previous schooling experience, teacher education program and curriculum specifications may influence their conceptions of teaching. This case study looked into how their choice of metaphors relate to their pedagogical beliefs and practice. It also tries to examine the extent to which previous schooling experience, teacher education programme, and KBSM curriculum specifications influence the ESL pre-service teachers’ pedagogical beliefs and practice. Instruments used were semi-structured interview and reflective task assigned to them after their teaching practicum at local government schools. Findings indicated that the pre-service teachers have multiple roles which are represented by various metaphors that they produced in their reflective tasks. The three most common roles include meeting students’ needs, varying teaching approach, and facilitating students. The study also found that previous schooling experience and teacher education programme have the most influence on all the pre-service teachers’ beliefs and practice.

Increasing numbers of English language learners (ELLs) and diminishing services for those students is resulting in mainstream teachers across the United States taking on the responsibility of teaching ELLs. This demands the preparation of all teachers to teach ELLs. Yet adequate preparation of these educators depends on insight into the beliefs that preservice teachers carry with them to the classroom. These beliefs are critical in their impact on teacher behavior and teacher expectations of ELLs. Remarkably, what preservice teachers believe about ELL issues is overlooked in research. The purpose of the present study was to look beyond these previously explored paths of ESL, bilingual, multicultural, and foreign language education to discover preservice Pre-K through 8th grade mainstream teachers' beliefs about language learning in order to better inform future teacher preparation programs. The research questions used to accomplish the purpose of this study focused on what beliefs pre-service teachers at Texas A & M University hold regarding second language learning and teaching before ESL coursework, how those beliefs change after ESL coursework, and what variables influence these pre-service teachers' beliefs about English language learning and teaching? A total of 354 individuals participated in the study. They were involved in ESL coursework during their participation in the study. The data were collected from August of 2006 to May of 2007. This study had a mixed method design. The research instruments included a Likert-scale questionnaire and focus group interviews. The interviews were analyzed according to the constant-comparative method. The questionnaires were analyzed based descriptive statistics, paired sample t-tests, and hierarchical multiple regression. Major findings of the study include that before ESL coursework, preservice teachers largely undervalued ELLs' L1, yet they were aware of ELLs in mainstream environments and positive about ELLs themselves. Coursework was found to be effective in that after ESL coursework there was an obvious shift toward greater alignment in beliefs with principles of ESL education. Interviews underscored the role of field experience, teacher educators and ESL courses in impacting belief change.

This book examines a range of complex issues concerning the professional experience (i.e., practicum) in English language teacher education with regard to curriculum design and implementation, as well as professional learning. Key findings suggest that, despite the constructivist and critical approaches to teacher education reflected in much of the data, institutional and structural constraints accompanying a nine-month B. Ed. program delivered to 1300 candidates limit the success of adequately addressing diversity and equity-related initiatives such as ESL Infusion. Additional support should be provided for teacher educators in promoting inclusive practices through revised policies and models of program delivery, recruitment of both teacher candidates and instructors who demonstrate anti-discriminatory stances and practices, and formal education for teacher educators. This thesis analyzes the extent to which three different teacher educators at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto (OISE/UT), operating within the constraints of their professional circumstances and the scope of their beliefs, promote ESL-inclusive teaching strategies and issues in their pre-service courses as part of an institution-wide ESL Infusion Initiative. Examining ESL infusion in teacher preparation is particularly relevant at a time when increasing cultural and linguistic diversity in Ontario schools coincides with reduction in resources and specialist support for ESL learners. Using critical ethnographic research methods, I use the lens of ESL infusion to consider the beliefs and practices of teacher educators as they relate to ESL-inclusive pedagogy and concepts of effective teacher preparation more broadly.
