Despite the largest-scale decentralisation of education since 1999, which broadly led to the marketisation of education, it is not clear how school education responds to the multicultural realities of Indonesian society and ethno-religious conflicts. Creating Multicultural Citizens presents a comprehensive evaluation of contemporary education in the largest democratic Muslim country in the world, focusing on the ways in which education prepares citizens for a multicultural society. It thoroughly examines the state-religion-community roles in the field of education in developing the Indonesian people. Using a qualitative ethnographic methodology, the author presents six case studies of different schools, including religious, non-religious, state and private schools, in two different provinces in Indonesia. It particularly explores: Evolving but contested theories of multiculturalism and multicultural education; Education changes and reforms in post-Suharto Indonesia; Government policies for multicultural education and school curriculum; School leadership for education for diversity; Roles of religious education in schools in nurturing multicultural beliefs, values and attitudes; Extra-curricular activities and tolerance; Students’ perspectives of multiculturalism and the ideal society; The promising development of a pesantren (Islamic boarding school in establishing multicultural education. It is the first book to explore how education in Indonesia helps contribute to the creation of tolerant and multicultural citizens and is essential reading for anyone involved in Indonesian education and international higher education.

The so-called nation states have created ethnical minorities. Also due to migration, cultural diversity is the reality. The multicultural society is strongly reproduced in the schools all over Europe. Cultural diversity in the classroom is increasingly recognized as a potential which should not be neglected. The educational system has, above all, to provide all children with equal opportunities. Experts from Finland, the UK, Hungary, Spain, Greece, Cyprus, and other European states, mostly responsible for teacher education, have contributed to this volume with critical, but constructive remarks on the classroom reality in their countries. This book is valuable reading for academics and practitioners in educational sciences.

This monograph discusses the approach taken by the educational system of Queensland, Australia, to develop and implement a multicultural education program. The document is presented in five major sections. In the first section, a report of objectives, philosophy, and activities of the Queensland Working Party on Multicultural Education is presented. Broad objectives include assisting children to develop a personal identity which incorporates their ethnic heritage, encouraging them to contribute to the national identity, and helping all teachers, students, and schools recognize that education for a multicultural society is the concern and responsibility of all schools. Specific ways in which these objectives can be achieved include emphasizing the intrinsic worth of all peoples, stressing the positive social contributions of cultural differences, and developing curriculum which is multicultural in content and global in perspective. Sections II and III offer an overview of the multicultural nature of Australian society. Data are presented on cultural diversity in schools, demographic factors, and numbers of students receiving instruction in English as a second language. Section IV focuses on the role of the school in a multicultural society. Information is presented on teacher education, curriculum development, the need for multicultural sensitivity, objectives, language studies, and community programs. Section V identifies possible sources of multicultural support within the community. The final section offers recommendations for implementing multicultural objectives in areas of community involvement, teacher development, curriculum development, and school resources, personnel, and organization. This book introduces multiculturalism and its relationship to education and schooling, while also highlighting current approaches to multicultural education and placing them in a broad comparative and international context. Through a comparative view that is both domestic and international, the book explores ethnicity, race, class, and education (kindergarten through higher education) as they interact to integrate populations, while also serving vested interests and enhancing group identity and status. The authors position multiculturalism as a political and social phenomena that affects and interacts with education and its institutions. To do this, they draw upon international cases as well as the history of segmentation and integration in the United States.
