This monograph discusses the approach taken by the educational system of Queensland, Australia, to develop and implement a multicultural education program. The document is presented in five major sections. In the first section, a report of objectives, philosophy, and activities of the Queensland Working Party on Multicultural Education is presented. Broad objectives include assisting children to develop a personal identity which incorporates their ethnic heritage, encouraging them to contribute to the national identity, and helping all teachers, students, and schools recognize that education for a multicultural society is the concern and responsibility of all schools. Specific ways in which these objectives can be achieved include emphasizing the intrinsic worth of all peoples, stressing the positive social contributions of cultural differences, and developing curriculum which is multicultural in content and global in perspective. Sections II and III offer an overview of the multicultural nature of Australian society. Data are presented on cultural diversity in schools, demographic factors, and numbers of students receiving instruction in English as a second language. Section IV focuses on the role of the school in a multicultural society. Information is presented on teacher education, curriculum development, the need for multicultural sensitivity, objectives, language studies, and community programs. Section V identifies possible sources of multicultural support within the community. The final section offers recommendations for implementing multicultural objectives in areas of community involvement, teacher development, curriculum development, and school resources, personnel, and organization. Multicultural Education In Glocal Perspectives written by Yun-Kyung Cha and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-15 with Education categories.

This conceptually rich and empirically grounded book draws upon expertise from a panel of emerging and established international scholars to explore the institutionalization and effect of multicultural education on a global scale. Previous studies of multicultural education have largely ignored the significance of understanding the combination of multiple sociopolitical influences on multicultural education in both policy and practice. Filling this void, this book sheds light on the two main reasons for taking a “glocal” perspective on multicultural education. First, children should be provided with meaningful learning opportunities to acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to live in a culturally and ethno-linguistically diverse society, where the distinction between the local and the global is becoming blurred. Second, understanding both the “global grammar” and the “local semantics” of multicultural education helps researchers and policy-makers grasp the whole picture of multicultural education as an evolving social construct and phenomenon. This new book provokes a new round of discussion and research to expand and enrich our inquiry into cultural diversity and educational inclusion.

Despite the largest-scale decentralisation of education since 1999, which broadly led to the marketisation of education, it is not clear how school education responds to the multicultural realities of Indonesian society and ethno-religious conflicts. Creating Multicultural Citizens presents a comprehensive evaluation of contemporary education in the largest democratic Muslim country in the world, focusing on the ways in which education prepares citizens for a multicultural society. It thoroughly examines the state-religion-community roles in the field of education in developing the Indonesian people. Using a qualitative ethnographic methodology, the author presents six case studies of different schools, including religious, non-religious, state and private schools, in two different provinces in Indonesia. It particularly explores: Evolving but contested theories of multiculturalism and multicultural education; Education changes and reforms in post-Suharto Indonesia; Government policies for multicultural education and school curriculum; School leadership for education for diversity; Roles of religious education in schools in nurturing multicultural beliefs, values and attitudes; Extra-curricular activities and tolerance; Students’ perspectives of multiculturalism and the ideal society; The promising development of a pesantren (Islamic boarding school in establishing multicultural education. It is the first book to explore how education in Indonesia helps contribute to the creation of tolerant and multicultural citizens and is essential reading for anyone involved in Indonesian education and international higher education.
