Excerpt from A History of Pennsylvania No other state in the Union presents a history so closely connected with world progress as Pennsylvania. Here are to be found the beginnings of many types of religions. Here was the first real experiment in popular government. Here have been developed the whole theory and practice of transportation and the intricate factory system. Pennsylvania has been the laboratory in which many important experiments in sociology, religion, and government have been performed. Local history has an appeal not easily found in works covering a larger sphere. In this book an effort has been made so to present the subject as to lead the pupil to a better understanding of our national history. Hence special emphasis has been laid upon the various incidents in the life of the nation which have taken place in Pennsylvania. To make these relations clear to the pupil it has often been necessary to mention events which have occurred in other states. This plan has been followed in the hope that this book may be used as an introduction to, and in connection with, a study of the history of the United States. In the arrangement of materials, the topical method of treatment has been employed. This has occasionally brought events out of their chronological order. This was done to make the relation of events clear to pupils. In addition it was thought that detached descriptions of incidents have a tendency to form the bad habit of committing history to memory, whereas a logical arrangement encourages a correct method of study. The author is indebted for assistance and encouragement to Hon. Nathan C. Schaeffer and Hon. A. D. Glenn. Special acknowledgment is made to Dr. J. George Becht, Hon. Reed B. Teitrick, and Miss Katherine M. Ulery, of the Greensburg High School, who carefully read all of the manuscript and made valuable corrections and suggestions. Excerpt from The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania The object of the series of hand books of which this is the pioneer is to give in compact form the salient facts relating to the history, development and present social, economic and political status of the different States of the Union. To those who are interested in any special phase of the development of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, it is hoped this book will be a guide for more comprehensive study than is afforded by its pages. It has been sought to treat as completely as possible in each chapter such matters as are essential to a full understanding of the physical characteristics, the aborigines, the colonists and later emigrants, the framework of government as first established and as it exists today. A study is made of the daily life of the people and methods of administration, of governmental, religious, social and domestic affairs, of State finance, of the sources of wealth, of the churches and other religious bodies, of conditions affecting the home, and the educational system, the professions, literature, art, science, and finally of penology. Great pains have been taken to verify the statistics to the latest date available. No one of the original States of the Union has had a greater influence than Pennsylvania; her natural wealth, her geographical position, her varied types of settlers have all combined to this end. Excerpt from The Place of Washington in the History of Western Pennsylvania Washington made six visits to Western Pennsylvania: in 1753- 1754-1755-1758-1770 and 1781; and on three of them he spent some time on the site of the city of Pittsburgh, viz.: in 1753, 1758, and 1770. His first public service was his trip to Western Pennsylvania in 1753 as bearer of a letter from Governor Dinwiddic to Legardeur de la St. Pierre, the French commandant, at Venango. This and three subsequent visits to Western Pennsylvania - 1754, 1755, 1758 - all had to do with the matter of the contest between the English and French for the possession of the Ohio Valley. To my mind, the most interesting of all Washington's visits, and the one which appeals to the imagination most, is his first visit, in 1753, when he carried Governor Dinwiddle's letter to the French commandant, warning the French out of the country of the Ohio Valley. At this time Washington was a youth of 21, inured to the life of the forest by four years' service as surveyor and adjutant-general of the Virginia Militia, which did much to fit him for the undertaking. Before attempting to describe this journey, let us look at the course of events which had given rise to Governor Dinwiddle's demand, through his messenger, Washington, that the French should leave the country of the Ohio Valley.
