Doing Secondary Analysis written by Angela Dale and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-06-30 with Social Science categories.

Originally published in 1988 Doing Secondary Analysis is a practical guide to the secondary analysis of large-scale survey data. At a time when funding for primary data collection was increasingly constrained, the secondary analysis of high-quality government surveys offered the social scientist an unrivalled opportunity. This volume provided a guide which moves through every stage of 'doing secondary analysis'. The authors begin with the conceptualization of the research problem and examine all the practicalities of using both standard rectangular data and hierarchical data, and of deriving simple and complex variables. They also provide a lucid description of the hardware and software available to the secondary analyst at the time. This book successfully demonstrates the way in which secondary analysis can contribute both to the development of sociological theory and to social policy formation. The authors emphasize throughout that secondary analysis cannot be used as a short cut to quick 'results', but that as much care over defining the research problem and understanding the categories of data is needed as for any other kind of research. While Doing Secondary Analysis was invaluable to those about to embark upon social research, it also offered many challenges to more experienced researchers.

In recent decades, social work and other social science research disciplines have become increasingly reliant on large secondary data sets, which have increased in both number and accessibility. When starting a new research project, how does one determine whether to use a secondary data set? Which of the thousands available should be used? This invaluable and expertly written guide provides an in-depth introduction to 29 of the most widely used data sets in social work, such as the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, and the U.S. Census. This book also examines the years covered by these cross-sectional and longitudinal data sets, the units of analysis, and the sample sizes. Readers will learn where to find the data and the key variables contained within, and how to use them in SAS and Stata. Screen shots guide researchers through data sets in a step-by-step process: how to download the data, how to merge it with other data sets, and how to program it when necessary. Each section also profiles studies that have used the respective data sets, giving researchers a clear feel for the depth and range of questions that a given data source can be used to answer, like the use of government data to explore issues ranging from pathways out of poverty to the relationship between marital dissolution and women's health and well-being. Exceptionally well calibrated and filled with real-world examples, this pocket guide will give beginning and advanced researchers a comprehensive understanding of these data sets that they can use in their research on clinical, policy, and other types studies.

One central and enduring image of the social science researcher is of an individual who commits a great deal of time to collecting original, primary data from a field of enquiry. This approach is often underpinned by a sincerely held belief that key research questions can only be explored by the collection of ever new, and ever greater amounts of data, or that already existing data are insufficient for researchers to test their ideas. Yet such an approach to social science research can be problematic not least because the collection of primary data can be an expensive, time-consuming, and even wasteful approach to social enquiry. Secondary analysis can serve many purposes, as well as being a valid approach in its own right. However, despite its widespread application, secondary analysis is often undervalued or perceived to be the preserve of only those interested in the re-use of large-scale survey data. Highlighting both the theory and practice of secondary analysis and the use of secondary sources, this collection considers the nature of secondary analysis as a research tool; reflects on the definitional debates surrounding terms such as secondary analysis, data re-use and restudies; illustrates how secondary analysis is used in social science research; and finally reviews the practical, methodological and ethical aspects of secondary analysis. Volume One: Using Secondary Sources and Secondary Analysis Volume Two: Quantitative Approaches to Secondary Analysis Volume Three: Qualitative Data and Research in Secondary Analysis Volume Four: Ethical, Methodological and Practical Issues in Secondary Analysis
