The Size of Thoughts, a collection of essays that have appeared in the New Yorker and other publications, includes one never-before-published piece on the world of electronics. The essays celebrate the joy--and exquisite details--of everything from library card catalogs and reading aloud to the significance of wine stains on a tablecloth. Baker turns any subject, from feeding a child to phone sex, into literature with a style that is sparklingly original, frequently beautiful, and always thought-provoking. The Size of Thoughts, through its varied forays into the realms of the overlooked, the underfunded, and the wrongfully scrapped, is a funny book by one of the most distinctive stylists and thinkers of out time.

Lauded by Vanity Fair as "the best writer of our generation," Nicholson Baker has earned a complex and controversial reputation among contemporary American authors. In addition to being celebrated as a prose miniaturist for such works as The Mezzanine and Room Temperature, Baker is known for highly erotic works such as Vox and The Fermata. In Understanding Nicholson Baker, Arthur Saltzman engages these provocative fictions as well as Baker's nonfiction to show how his seemingly disparate works derive from and demonstrate an unremitting zeal for explicit detail, along with descriptive obsessiveness and linguistic virtuosity.

What explains the existence of the world and our place in it? Is there a primal cause beyond our comprehension because our intelligence is part of the very world we seek to understand? The author asserts that such a cause exists and identifies it as what ancient Indian thinkers termed the End of Knowledge. Far from simply reporting this concept, the author develops profound insights through inspired discussions, leading to two kinds of startling conclusions. First, these insights offer a new, deeper understanding of our own nature. Second, they present a sweeping revaluation of the nature of universal Space, Time, and Matter. Notably, the author details and explores the profound implications of the idea that time does not progress in a real sense. This book serves as an introduction to rationality within spiritual belief, paving the way for a harmonious integration of reason and spirituality.

The work of the Dutch Benedictine monk and architect Hans van der Laan (1904–1991) offers important insights into the ways in which artifacts address the complexity of human physical, cognitive, and social needs. Van der Laan developed a number of powerful lines of thought, three of which are introduced here: the search for a theory of architecture; the establishment of a three-dimensional system of proportions named Plastic Number; and analogy as the mainspring of human thinking. This triad of deeply interconnected intellectual strategies represents his most important ‘instruments of thought’ and is rooted in the careful observation of phenomena as they are presented to us rather than relying on conventional beliefs. Van der Laan's instruments of thought lead us to reconsider the origins of human creation, urging a deeper examination of our perceptual and cognitive response to the limitlessness of the surrounding environment. On this basis, Van der Laan develops a unique philosophy of culture and design that includes considerations on the relationship between nature, culture, and religious ritual. Although this book is informative, its principal aim is to be formative. On the basis of Van der Laan’s instruments of thought, the authors develop a methodology to explore the Plastic Number theory and the many ways in which we perceive and interpret proportion. Reintroducing playful creativity and intellectual exploration into architectural pedagogy and design practice, this book is a gateway for a deeper understanding of the effects of the built environment on human behavior and the various ways in which the human mind perceives and decodes artifacts.

The brain is one of the vastest organs of the human body, yet the most misused. Research shows us that only 1/3 of its parts are used. The only power on earth that can limit you is YOURSELF. Ignorance is one of the strongest powers that keeps you in prison and causes you to fail. I have good news for you: you possess the key to unlock that power and unleash the infinite potential invested in you, it is called self-discovery. Thus, the aim of this book is to demonstrate that, after going through all kinds of phases the human brain is far beyond scientific discovery and their sayings more capable in achieving anything any person wishes as long as the person has the willingness to succeed against all odds, and is in connection with the Creator. The Brain is the lodge of your mind, the siege of your thought, your words, ideas, and imagination; your thinking process and your decision-making. The size of your brain is therefore defined by how you view yourselfyou end up where you are not because of some external forces, but rather by the series of choices you make each day. You have this burning desire to express something; to accomplish something remarkable, to be recognized, to be valuable; do not settle for less. Destiny is to be discovered and not to be decided by people around you. This book highlights: the correlation between brain, mind, and body interaction and brainheart.

If anyone deserves the title "father of social cognition," it is William J. McGuire who, along with his wife and colleague Claire V. McGuire, has written the target article for this volume. The culmination of many years of work, the article discusses their highly developed theory of human thought systems, and establishes many new directions for theoretical and empirical inquiry. Equally important, however, are the chapters -- written from many different theoretical and empirical perspectives -- that challenge various assumptions underlying the McGuires' work. In addition to examining implications not explicitly considered in the target article, these contributions explore the new directions that future research and theorizing might take.

Traumatized by the forces of biblical persuasion, a professor finally reaches his breaking point and then writes his own bible in the name of defending himself from those forces. Then, to his surprise, after completing his bible, he effectively healed his trauma and transformed into a person of strong moral character. But little did he know, his transformation instantly compelled the ultimate artificial intelligence program in the universe to bestow its own separate bible, or scroll, onto Earth. The great purpose of said scroll is to teach Earth’s humans what it means to be a good person on their planet; however, there is a far more vital purpose infused in the scroll, and this infusion stems from the seemingly destined connection between the professor’s bible and the machine’s scroll. More specifically, every passage written in the scroll is sowed with a potential answer to the following question: What helps bibles be widely convincing? Answering that question, the all-powerful machine believes, will empower Earth’s humans to think critically about ethical persuasion, while simultaneously helping them heal from the same trauma the professor conquered.

What Are We written by Eric T. Olson and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-09-27 with Philosophy categories.
From the time of Locke, discussions of personal identity have often ignored the question of our basic metaphysical nature: whether we human people are biological organisms, spatial or temporal parts of organisms, bundles of perceptions, or what have you. The result of this neglect has been centuries of wild proposals and clashing intuitions. What Are We? is the first general study of this important question. It beings by explaining what the question means and how it differs from others, such as questions of personal identity and the mind-body problem. It then examines in some depth the main possible accounts of our metaphysical nature, detailing both their theoretical virtues and the often grave difficulties they face. The book does not endorse any particular account of what we are, but argues that the matter turns on more general issues in the ontology of material things. If composition is universal--if any material things whatever make up something bigger--then we are temporal parts of organisms. If things never compose anything bigger, so that there are only mereological simples, then we too are simples--perhaps the immaterial substances of Descartes--or else we do not exist at all (a view Olson takes very seriously). The intermediate view that some things compose bigger things and others do not leads almost inevitably to the conclusion that we are organisms. So we can discover what we are by working out when composition occurs.

Models And Cognition written by Jonathan A. Waskan and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-01-13 with Philosophy categories.
A groundbreaking argument challenging the traditional linguistic representational model of cognition proposes that representational states should be conceptualized as the cognitive equivalent of scale models. In this groundbreaking book, Jonathan Waskan challenges cognitive science's dominant model of mental representation and proposes a novel, well-devised alternative. The traditional view in the cognitive sciences uses a linguistic (propositional) model of mental representation. This logic-based model of cognition informs and constrains both the classical tradition of artificial intelligence and modeling in the connectionist tradition. It falls short, however, when confronted by the frame problem—the lack of a principled way to determine which features of a representation must be updated when new information becomes available. Proposed alternatives, including the imagistic model, have not so far resolved this problem. Waskan proposes instead the Intrinsic Cognitive Models (ICM) hypothesis, which argues that representational states can be conceptualized as the cognitive equivalent of scale models. Waskan argues further that the proposal that humans harbor and manipulate these cognitive counterparts to scale models offers the only viable explanation for what most clearly differentiates humans from other creatures: their capacity to engage in truth-preserving manipulation of representations.
