Steven Ericson has written what promises to be the most thorough study of the Japanese railroad industry in the English language. In addition to the body of research on the industry itself, Ericson has provided an astute analysis of the politics of development and the relationship between state and private enterprise in the Japanese railroad industry during the Meiji period. He explores the economic role of government and the nature of state-business relations in the course of Japan's modern transformation, and at the same time challenges the tendency of current scholarship to minimize the role of the Japanese government as well as commercial banks in Meiji industrialization. By providing a fresh perspective on the "strong state/weak state" debate through detailed analysis of the 1906-1907 railway nationalization, Ericson's study sheds new light on the Meiji origins of modern Japanese industrial policy and politics, filling a major gap in the available literature on the Meiji political economy.

"THE SOUND OF THE WHISTLE" is another exciting and original mini-novel by Chicago Writer Clyde David Jones who has written some impressive books including his Award-Winning Novel "RACHEL'S CHILDREN." This new exciting fictional story shines the bright light on corporate corruption and dangerous politics motivated by greed, competition, and outlandish territorial power-seeking.In this brilliantly written story, the new outsider Terrence Maxwell and his co-workers found themselves confronted by the possible unjust loss of their livelihoods [jobs]. The men found themselves up against some strong foes whose actions of corruption, ignominy, and organized crime left the men with no other option but to fight back. This story puts great emphasis on the importance of informal groups and the use of whistle blowers. Their roles and the differences that they can make in helping to secure justice on the battlefields of life are spotlighted in this exciting new book "THE SOUND OF THE WHISTLE."

Affectivity In Interaction written by Elisabeth Reber and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-03-06 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

How do participants display affectivity in social interaction? Based on recordings of authentic everyday conversations and radio phone-ins, this study offers a fine-grained analysis of how recipients of affect-laden informings deploy sound objects, i.e. interjections (oh, ooh and ah) and paralinguistic signals (whistle and clicks), for responsive displays of affectivity. Examining the use of such sound objects across a number of interactional activities including news telling, troubles talk, complaining, assessments and repair, the study provides evidence that the sound pattern and sequential placement of sound objects systematically contribute to their specific meaning-making in interaction, i.e. the management of sequence organisation and interactional relevancies (e.g. affiliation). Presenting an in-depth analysis of a little researched area of language use from an interactional linguistic perspective, the book will be of theoretical and methodological interest to an audience with a background in linguistics, sociology and conversational studies.

Making Trains Sound Like Trains written by Deane H. Ellsworth and has been published by Voyageur Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-15 with Transportation categories.

Follow the evolution of the sound of a train's horn - here, there, and everywhere. World War II was over and railroads were retiring war-weary steam locomotives in favor of shiny new diesel locomotives. Deane Ellsworth, a young train-crazy lad at the time, wondered if anyone anywhere cared about the steam locomotives' musical train whistles being replaced by the monotone horns. Indeed, a public accustomed to the melodious sounds of steam whistles registered concerns about these new horns as a growing source of noise, confusion, and accidents. As it happened, Ellsworth would go on to develop the K5LA and K3LA airhorns that are used on thousands of locomotives across North America today. In Making Trains Sound Like Trains, he relates the compelling tale - part history, part personal story - of the evolution of the train horn from the postwar period to today. Along the way, readers meet the colorful characters who found themselves involved in the story: loggers, poets, railroaders, industrialists, musicians, and more. Told for the first time, this detailed account combines an entertaining narrative, current and historical photography, and more than eighty field recordings. Railfans, historians, collectors, musicians, and those who smile at the sound of a distant train will not want to miss this book!
