Not illustrated. 1875 edition. Excerpt: ... A DEFENCE OF MODERN SPIRITUALISM/ (reprinted With Notes And Additions From The "Fobtniohtlt Review.") It is with great diffidence, but under an imperative sense of duty, that the present writer accepts the opportunity afforded him of submitting to the readers of the Fortnightly Eeview some general account of a wide-spread movement, which, though for the most part treated with ridicule or contempt, he believes to embody truths of the most vital importance to human progress. The subject to be treated is of such vast extent; the evidence concerning it is so varied and so extraordinary; the prejudices that surround it are so inveterate, that it is not possible to do it justice without entering into considerable detail. The reader who ventures on the perusal of the succeeding pages may, therefore, have his patience tried; but if he is able to throw aside his preconceived ideas of what is possible and what is impossible, and in the acceptance or rejection of what is submitted to him will carefully weigh * The following are the more important works which have been used in the preparation of this article: --Judge Edmond's "Spiritual Tracts," New York, 1858--1860. W T Stead written by Stewart J. Brown and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-26 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

W. T. Stead (1849-1912) was a newspaper editor, author, social reformer, advocate for women rights, peace campaigner, spiritualist, and one of the best-known public figures in the late Victorian and Edwardian Britain. W. T. Stead: Nonconformist and Newspaper Prophet provides a compelling religious biography of Stead, offering particular attention to his conception of journalism--in an age of growing mass literacy--as a means to communicate religious truth and morality, and his view of the editor's desk as a modern pulpit. Leading scholar, Stewart J. Brown explores how his Nonconformist Conscience and sense of divine calling infused Stead's newspaper crusades-most famously his 'Maiden Tribute' campaign against child prostitution. The biography also examines Stead's growing interest in spiritualism and the occult, as he searched for the evidence of an afterlife that might draw people in a more secular age back to faith. It discusses his imperialism and his belief in the English-speaking peoples of the British Empire and American Republic as God's new chosen people for the spread of civilisation; and it highlights how his growing understanding of other faiths and cultures--but more especially his moral revulsion over the South African War of 1899-1902--brought him to question those beliefs. Finally, it assesses the influence of religious faith on his campaigns for world peace and the arbitration of international disputes.

Spiritualism is a religious denomination, a science, a philosophy and a way of life; it is based on the fact that not only is life eternal, but this can be proved. As a religious denomination it is progressive and is considered by many to be the basis for all spiritual religions' belief systems. As a philosophy it is clear and accessible, and as a way of life it brings an element of joy into every nook and cranny of everyone's pathway through life on earth. Spiritualism itself was born of the northern hemisphere of our planet, although its phenomena are universal and timeless and the truths that it has revealed are as old as the earth itself. So how does Spiritualism prove that every human being, as well as every other creature, lives forever? This is established through mediumship. This book is a collection of facts, information and workshops. Whether you are a keen novice, or a practised veteran of Spiritualism, this book has all you need to walk the Spiritualist path, or even set up your own NSS church.
