"This report is a study of the mechanisms by which the status of translators is signalled in the European Union in 2011-12, with comparisons with the United States, Canada and Australia. ... It offers sociological and economic modelling of the way signalling mechanisms affect markets in this field, with specific reference to academic qualifications, professional certifications, membership of associations and years of experience. The report proposes criteria for actions that might be taken to enhance the signalling of status. Status is understood as the presumed value of expert skills, rather than the skills themselves."--Ed.

Digital transformation and demographic change are profoundly affecting the contexts in which the language industry operates, the resources it deploys and the roles and skillsets of those it employs. Driven by evolving digital resources and socio-ethical demands, the roles and responsibilities deriving from the proliferation of new and emerging profiles in the language industry are transcending the traditional bounds of core activities and competences associated with prototypical concepts of translation and interpreting. This volume focuses on the realities in the language industry from the fresh perspective of current and emerging professional profiles and of the contexts and resources that condition and support them. It traces the industry's evolution, maps its current state and considers key aspects of its workplaces, actors and practices. In an age when artificial intelligence is challenging traditionally held views of human performance, it addresses the issue of where and how human agents add value to the industry's processes and products, with a detailed, research-based consideration of the activities, competences, roles, responsibilities and tools that characterize the language industry of today and the near future.

Professional Interpreting Programmes In China written by Yinying Wang and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-07 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
Wang presents the status quo of curriculum development in professional interpreting programmes in China and points to the urgency to devise a curriculum improvement model to ensure the relevance of such programmes against a changing reality. She covers the European experience in interpreter education that China can learn from and discusses opportunities arising from previous examples for China to iterate upon in the context of the broader and more diverse professional reality. The book puts the nature of professional interpreters and, in turn, interpreting programmes, under the concurring lens of curriculum studies and the sociology of professions. Wang identifies eight stakeholders which call for changes in interpreting programmes, and six categories of competence (or sub-competence) which see a progression from undergraduate to graduate and lifelong-learning stage. These serve as curriculum goals and encapsulate the recommended changes in institutional curricula. The conceptualised model is then described with a case study on Chinese-English retour training to show its applicability and relevance in interpreting programmes on the ground. Offering insight for academics, practitioners and trainee interpreting students and of relevance to a broader interpreting community looking to set up or reform interpreting curricula, Wang’s book will help ensure curriculum improvement that is theoretically sound and practically viable.
