Excerpt from A History of the United States Navy IN preparing this volume the writer has been animated by a desire to tell, in one convenient volume, that might be sold at a moderate price, the whole story of our navy - to describe all the important naval battles, and to show how the nation has been affected at certain times by the work of its naval ships, and at other times by the want of such a force. All battles that have had any influence upon the wars in which the nation has been engaged, or upon the evolution of ships of war, or upon the character of our naval men, or of the nation, have been deemed important herein. Any con sideration of the facts shows that our sailors were animated, in most of their battles, by the knowledge that they were fighting for the very life of the nation, and it is therefore not too much to say that a description of such a fight must be a hero story, however told. Frankly, it was in the be lief that every history of our navy claims attention first of all as a hero story that this one was written. Excerpt from Our Wonderful Navy: The Story of the Sure Shield in Peace and War Physical drill commences his training, on the principle that well stretched and supple muscles can not only do more and better work than abby or coarse ones, but are all to the well-being Of the pupil. Later' in the course, he is introduced to the swimming bath, where, if he cannot already breast the ood, yet a second instructor is waiting to teach him the rudiments Of the natatory art, and within a fortnight the new hand is talking quite learnedly of the more com plicated strokes Of swimming, or boasting Of his prowess in life-saving drill, or of the number Of lengths he can now swim. Squad drill, the way to walk and where to put his feet, and various field exercises enter greatly into Young Jack's life at this stage, and so hard does he work, and so keen is he on the new life, that he is usually very tired when the bugle goes for him to pack up instructions at four o'clock in the afternoon. Besides this, he puts in a certain number of hours each week at school, where, after a preliminary ex amination, he is placed in either an ordinary or advanced class. In the ordinary class he carries on with the education started at his elementary school; in the advanced class he is taught algebra, trigonometry. Excerpt from Our Navy and the Next War If ever the navy of the United States needed the intelligent support of the American people, it is at the present moment. And it is fortunate that interest is now growing, and that a disposition on the part of our citizens to force action toward the meeting of the needs of the service is beginning to show itself. On one point there seems to be no difference of opinion - that if we are to have a navy at all, it should be as efficient as it possibly can be made. We have to-day individual ships that are the admiration of foreign naval architects. We have officers and men on board of them that we believe are the equal of those in any other service. We have certain materials of war that are as good as those manufactured for other fleets. But what we have not appreciated is that efficient individual ships and efficient crews do not alone make a powerful navy. These units must be welded into an efficient whole by an organization and administration which co-ordinate their capabilities and direct their efforts toward a common end. Excerpt from The Naval History of the Civil War Since that era the Navy of the United States has been making history for the country on a scale almost bewildering, and could the Old pioneer captains of 1812 have been permitted to look on from their present abode (wherever that may be), we doubt not but that they would have been astonished at the large fleets we were putting afloat with such wonderful rapidity; and they would also have acknowledged that their descend ants had nobly borne themselves in the war for the salvation of this Union, which was as dear to our forefathers as it is to us at the present time. Excerpt from Our Naval War With France The spoliation of American commerce by the French, and the resulting hostilities during the last years of the eighteenth century, form the earliest episode of importance in our history under the Federal Constitution. It is, perhaps, natural that they should have been to a great extent overshadowed by the tremendous convulsions of the French Revolution. Yet these hostilities between the United States and France continued in an acute form nearly three years, and amounted to actual war, although war was declared on neither side. Important frigate actions and very many minor contests furnish some of the most stirring exploits in the early history of the navy. An examination of manuscript sources and contemporary newspapers has brought to light much material never before utilized. For aid in this search, the writer is indebted to the officials of the Navy Department, the Boston Public Library, and the Massachusetts Historical Society, and to many other persons. He is under especial obligations to Professor Edward Channing of Harvard University, and to Charles W. Stewart, Esq., Superintendent of Library and Naval War Records, Navy Department.
