In July 2013, National Public Radio (NPR) showcased a research study on why economically disadvantaged students "melted" during the summer between their high school graduation and fall enrollment in an institute of higher education (IHE). Summer melt has been defined as graduated high school students who intend and apply to go to college in the fall after graduation but end up not enrolling. The study found that up to 40% of economically disadvantaged students who planned to attend a community college never enrolled. The phenomenon of summer melt is not a new one, but with more economically disadvantaged students enrolling in higher education, it has become more apparent. The concern of summer melt is multifaceted. High schools are now holding themselves more responsible for how successfully they launch their graduates. IHEs are concerned that students who commit to their institutions become no-shows, which creates a ripple effect that on waiting lists and financial aid. Summer melt appears to be a relatively new area of study in educational research. The attempts to address the phenomenon come from K–12 school districts, IHEs, college-access organizations and other nonprofit organizations. One method of addressing summer melt is summer bridge programs. Summer bridge programs are created to help improve college readiness and ease the transition into college. In the past, they were mainly created by IHEs with the intention of assisting students who had probationary acceptance. With attention appearing to shift now to college completion, the connection of summer melt to summer bridge programs as a possible intervention is timely and useful, especially for economically disadvantaged students. This research study examined the impact of a summer bridge program in reducing the summer melt rate for two Title I high schools in Houston, Texas. The definition of summer melt for the purpose of this study has been broadened to include students who intend, at the time of high school graduation, to enroll in an IHE in the fall. The reason for the expansion of this definition is that most students this intervention addresses historically do not enroll in the local community college until the summer after graduation. Based on previous research conducted in this specific district, approximately 50% of students from these two high schools who intend to enroll in the local community college do not attend in the fall. The majority of students attending these high schools are economically disadvantaged, Hispanic, and first-generation college students. These variables will be discussed as possible factors influencing the high summer melt rates. A summer bridge program was created by the independent school district in partnership with the local community college in order to address summer melt. The impact of this program in addressing summer melt was assessed by the fall enrollment rate of students in the local community college. Summer bridge students were compared to students from the same high schools who did not attend the summer bridge program. All students included in the analysis had stated in a senior graduation survey that they planned to attend the local community college. Results indicated that the summer bridge program positively impacted students who are Hispanic and economically disadvantaged and this impact is statistically significant. The intentionality of services and planning required for a bridge program to be successful was apparent throughout the planning and execution of the program. The detailed description of the program as it relates to these components and set up of the program provides a valuable framework for other institutions to establish a similar bridge program.

Summer melt is a national phenomenon that occurs when high school graduates who intend to matriculate into higher education following graduation end up not doing so. This phenomenon is widespread across the country and enables the poverty cycle to continue. Over the last decade, national studies conducted to understand the summer melt phenomenon have identified three factors that create barriers to matriculation for high school graduates who succumb to summer melt: financial, paperwork, and home circumstances. The purpose of this phenomenological case study was to describe the experience or transition for a group of low-income graduates of a single school district in Southwest Ohio, all of who intended to matriculate into higher education. A sufficient number of matriculated and non-matriculated graduates were recruited to identify factors that contributed to the summer melt phenomenon among a small group of graduates who did not matriculate, and to describe how another small group of matriculated graduates overcame similar factors. Factors identified were compared to factors previously reported by national studies of the summer melt phenomenon. Emergent factors not previously identified were also reported, as well as factors matriculated graduates reported assisted in their successful transition from high school to higher education. Due to the small sample size, results cannot be taken as representative of all graduates of this school district, but may serve as a starting point for conducting future studies.

Latinx students are becoming the majority population in K-12 public schools in the United States. Despite higher education institutions, K-12 schools, and non-profit organizations working to increase Latinx college admission rates, these students continue to be underrepresented in four-year colleges/universities. Latinx students who successfully overcome the multiple barriers to become eligible, apply, and admitted into a university may find their post-secondary plans disintegrate during the summer months between high school graduation and college matriculation (Rall, 2016; Tichavakunda & Galan, 2020). This is a time period where traditionally neither the high school nor the intended college take responsibility for these students or support their transition, resulting in the failure of some students to matriculate at their intended post-secondary institution. Summer melt is a term applied to students that apply to college, are accepted to college, but melt away from the enrollment cycle in the summer months prior to the fall term for various reasons (Castleman & Page, 2014). This phenomenological study collected data from semi-structured interviews with California Latinx students who planned to attend university immediately after high school graduation in 2020 but did not actually matriculate at a four-year institution. The goal was to better understand the lived experiences of Latinx summer melt students as well as explore factors that influenced their final college decision during the COVID-19 pandemic. Study participants discussed the challenges they encountered during their college application and enrollment process and how they navigated these obstacles utilizing different supports and forms of community cultural wealth. The challenges students faced during their journey to college were COVID-19 pandemic, college cost and family finances, difficulty completing college enrollment tasks, and personal challenges. Students received support during their college transition process from family, near-age peers, high school staff, college access program staff, and community college staff. The major forms of CCW students utilized in the pursuit of their college goals were aspirational, familial, social and navigational while the least forms of capital used were resistant and linguistic.

Summer melt is defined as the attrition of students who complete high school with the intent to enroll in college but do not begin in the fall. The existing literature related to summer melt primarily focuses on interventions in an effort to minimize summer melt. These studies point to the benefit of summer assistance, either through advising or nudge text messaging, as strategies to decrease the rate of melt. Research to date primarily focuses on the macro-level of whether a student went to college or not. This study uses a different approach in that it investigates the type and frequency of change between intended enrollment and actual enrollment. I conducted a quantitative study using records from four graduating high school classes (2016 - 2019) of a national charter public network. Type is analyzed by categorizing intended and actual enrollment as four-year college, two-year college, or no college. This allowed for a more nuanced view of shifts between plans. In addition, I conducted a multiple logistic regression analysis of four-year intending students to test candidate predictors of melt. The final regression model included student demographic characteristics, academic record and intended institution characteristics. I fit the same model with two-year intending students to identify similarities and differences in the variables associated with melt based on the type of institution a student plans to attend. Of the 17,343 records used in this dataset, 22.8% of students had actual plans that did not match their intended plan. For four-year intending students, three variables were found to have statistically significant associations with melt: Expected Family Contribution (EFC), grade point average (GPA), and the six-year minority graduation rate of the intended institution. An implication from this study is that the lower the EFC, the higher expected probability of melt. This affirms the systemic challenges that exist for low-income students to gain access to higher education, perpetuating a system of social reproduction where those who are more affluent have higher odds of beginning college and greater chances to reap the benefits afforded by a college degree.

The Arctic sea ice is characterized by profound changes caused by surface melting processes and the formation of melt ponds in summer. Melt ponds contribute to the ice-albedo feedback as they reduce the surface albedo of sea ice, and hence accelerate the decay of Arctic sea ice. To quantify the melting of the entire Arctic sea ice, satellite based observations are necessary. Due to different spectral properties of snow, ice, and water, theoretically, multi-spectral optical sensors are necessary for the analysis of these distinct surface types. This study demonstrates the potential of optical sensors to detect melt ponds on Arctic sea ice. For the first time, an Arctic-wide, multi-annual melt pond data set for the years 2000-2011 has been created and analyzed.
