सूरज का सातवाँ घोड़ा धर्मवीर भारती भूमिका 'सूरज का सातवाँ घोड़ा' एक कहानी में अनेक कहानियाँ नहीं, अनेक कहानियों में एक कहानी है। वह एक पूरे समाज का चित्र और आलोचन है; और जैसे उस समाज की अनंत शक्तियाँ परस्पर-संबद्ध, परस्पर आश्रित और परस्पर संभूत हैं, वैसे ही उसकी कहानियाँ भी। प्राचीन चित्रों में जैसे एक ही फलक पर परस्पर कई घटनाओं का चित्रण करके उसकी वर्णनात्मकता को संपूर्ण बनाया जाता है, उसमें एक घटना-चित्र की स्थिरता के बदले एक घटनाक्रम की प्रवाहमयता लायी जाती है, उसी प्रकार इस समाज-चित्र में एक ही वस्तु को कई स्तरों पर, कई लोगों से और कई कालों में देखने और दर्शाने का प्रयत्न किया गया है, जिससे उसमें देश और काल दोनों का प्रसार प्रतिबिंबित हो सके। लंबाई और चौड़ाई के दो आयामों के फलक में गहराई का तीसरा आयाम छाँही द्वारा दिखाया जाता है; समाज-चित्र में देश के तीन आयामों के अतिरिक्त काल के भी आयाम आवश्यक होते हैं और उन्हें दर्शाने के लिए चित्रकार को अन्य उपाय ढूँढ़ना आवश्यक होता है। वह चित्र सुंदर, प्रीतिकर या सुखद नहीं है; क्योंकि उस समाज का जीवन वैसा नहीं है और भारती ने चित्र को यथाशक्य सच्चा उतारना चाहा है। पर वह असुंदर या अप्रीति कर भी नहीं, क्योंकि वह मृत नहीं है, न मृत्युपूजक ही है। उसमें दो चीजें हैं जो उसे इस खतरे से उबारती हैं - और इनमें से एक भी काफी होती है : एक तो उसका हास्य, भले ही वह वक्र और कभी कुटिल या विद्रूप भी हो; दूसरे एक अदम्य और निष्ठामयी आशा। वास्तव में जीवन के प्रति यह अडिग आस्था ही सूरज का सातवाँ घोड़ा है
