This book addresses the ability of market-based instruments to improve the sustainable provision of environmental services. The author combines field research and insights from the multi-stakeholder dialogue at the FAO to analyze the gap between the predictions provided by theory and the corresponding outcomes in practice. In particular, the author challenges the theory behind Payments for Environmental Services (PES), a concept derived from neoclassical welfare economics, by demonstrating that PES projects often lack financial sustainability unless local entrepreneurs make use of the resulting new networks to create innovative markets for environmental goods. Contemporary societies expect a range of services (including of carbon sequestration) to be supplied from forest ecosystems. Their growing societal importance is clearly reflected in policies. The conceptual framework for the states that people are integral parts of ecosystems and that a dynamic interaction exists between them and other parts of ecosystems. This approach encompasses social, economic and environmental interactions, and the dynamics and cross scale issues that have multiple outcomes. However, forest multifunctionality is a challenge since the combination of multiple ecosystem services may be very different and dependent on a high number of factors. Stakeholder priorities with respect to individual ecosystem services may be variable, as may be a range of stakeholders. Reflexive, participatory and multilevel governance, in a continuous process of its adjustment, needs therefore to be developed to enable forestry decision-makers to consider existing opinions and behavioural patterns of the diverse stakeholders who drive the forestry change and respond to it. In such a retrospective, numerous questions have arisen, among which the integration of carbon sequestration into multifunctional forestry is among priorities. Carbon forestry enables society to buy time for development of low carbon and decarbonisation technologies; while its integration into multifunctional land use offers innovation, employment and new markets, with locally and regionally oriented value chains. This particularly concerns remote areas where forestry could foster socio-economic development and combine it with the enhancement of nature and rural landscape. However, the question: how to multiply synergies and balance trade-offs merits attention. Fostering resilience of forestry systems to climate change necessitates the establishment of an appropriate framework, because, although multipurpose afforestation may result in lower rates of carbon sequestration, it is expected to be more attractive to people as it will provide additional benefits and will promote sustainable development.

Service and the service dominant logic driving today's global economy influence every aspect of our lives, in the process, shaping our social and natural environments. This scenario dictates that new ways to provide services must be offered that will enrich service systems and service networks with added values and benefits, ultimately to yield sustainable services. To put sustainability into practice and generate sustainable services will require more than merely implementing efficient physical resource management in the production, delivery, and use of services. First and foremost, sustainable service is that which fulfills customer needs and can be perpetuated for long periods of time without negatively influencing the customer's natural or social environment. In addition, sustainable services should integrate smart use of nonphysical resources with environmentally and socially aware behaviour, and take into account the service's potential short- and long-term effects, on both the local and the global scales. As service systems and networks will undoubtedly become much more complex and specific in the future, they will require better coordination of the various actors, whether human or not, and better synchronization of the value production and delivery processes. These services should comprise three levels: (1) unidirectional value exchange from supplier to consumer, (2) bidirectional value co-creation between provider and customer, and (3) return of values by simultaneous co-generation of direct and indirect values by a provider and a customer to other customers (i.e., 3D services). Finally, the production of 3D services will enable the provision of long-term and indirect values and the co-creation of values with many indirect actors and even with the next generations. Moreover, sustainable services will be based on the generation of environmental, social, and economic values integrated into the provision of sustainability as a value, resembling the provision of ecosystem services.
