The Inner Experience written by Thomas Merton and has been published by Harper Collins this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-09-11 with Religion categories.

Now in paperback, revised and redesigned: This is Thomas Merton's last book, in which he draws on both Eastern and Western traditions to explore the hot topic of contemplation/meditation in depth and to show how we can practice true contemplation in everyday life. Never before published except as a series of articles (one per chapter) in an academic journal, this book on contemplation was revised by Merton shortly before his untimely death. The material bridges Merton's early work on Catholic monasticism, mysticism, and contemplation with his later writing on Eastern, especially Buddhist, traditions of meditation and spirituality. This book thus provides a comprehensive understanding of contemplation that draws on the best of Western and Eastern traditions. Merton was still tinkering with this book when he died; it was the book he struggled with most during his career as a writer. But now the Merton Legacy Trust and experts have determined that the book makes such a valuable contribution as his major comprehensive presentation of contemplation that they have allowed its publication.

The I Ching , or "Book of Change," is considered the oldest of the Chinese classics and has throughout history commanded unsurpassed prestige and popularity. Containing several layers of text and given numerous levels of interpretation, it has captured continuous attention for well over two thousand years. It has been considered a book of fundamental principles by philosophers, politicians, mystics, alchemists, yogins, diviners, sorcerers, and more recently by scientists and mathematicians. This first part of the present volume is the text of the I Ching proper—the sixty-four hexagrams plus sayings on the hexagrams and their lines—with the commentary composed by Liu I-ming, a Taoist adept, in 1796. The second part is Liu I-ming's commentary on the two sections added to the I Ching by earlier commentators, believed to be members of the original Confucian school; these two sections are known as the Overall Images and the Mixed Hexagrams. In total, the book illuminates the Taoist inner teachings as practiced in the School of Complete Reality. Well versed in Buddhism and Confucianism as well as Taoism, Liu I-ming intended his work to be read as a guide to comprehensive self-realization while living an ordinary life in the world. In his attempt to lift the veil of mystery from the esoteric language of the I Ching , he employs the terminology of psychology, sociology, history, myth, and religion. This commentary on the I Ching stands as a major contribution to the elucidation of Chinese spiritual genius.

My journey with the Tao Te Ching has been one of profound exploration and deep contemplation. The text, with its enigmatic and timeless wisdom, has long been a guide for those seeking understanding of the Tao and the nature of existence. In my quest to bring the essence of these ancient teachings to a broader audience, I embarked upon an ambitious project: to transcribe each of the 81 chapters of the Tao Te Ching into rhyming verses. The idea behind this endeavour was born from a contemplation of the Tao itself, which flows effortlessly like a great river, meandering and intertwining with the landscape of our lives. In much the same way, the art of rhyme introduces a rhythmic harmony to words, creating a flow that is both pleasing to the ear and soothing to the soul. Rhyming, in its essence, captures the natural cadence found in the world around us – the chirping of birds, the rustling of leaves, and the gentle lapping of waves. It reflects the Taoist principle of living in harmony with the natural world. Moreover, the Tao Te Ching, while profound and insightful, can be cryptic and challenging for many to penetrate. By transforming its teachings into rhyming verses, I sought to imbue them with a certain accessibility and charm. Rhyme has a unique way of lodging itself in the memory, allowing the wisdom of the Tao to resonate within the mind long after the words have been read. This poetic approach serves to demystify the Tao Te Ching, making its profound teachings more approachable and relatable. In this creative process, I endeavoured to maintain the integrity and depth of the original text, while also infusing it with a new life. Each verse was crafted with great care, ensuring that the essence of the teachings was not lost in the pursuit of rhyme. The result is a collection that is both a homage to the ancient wisdom of the Tao Te Ching and a fresh interpretation for the modern seeker. This rhyming rendition of the Tao Te Ching invites readers on a lyrical journey through the realms of philosophy, spirituality, and self-reflection. It is my hope that through these verses, the timeless wisdom of the Tao becomes a constant companion in their quest for inner peace and understanding. In the spirit of the Tao, these rhymes are not just words to be read, but a path to be walked, a dance to be danced, in the eternal flow of the universe.

The human race is in crisis and very few of us – if any – are able to understand what is wrong with our lives and the world at large. How did this happen and how did humans become so ‘disconnected’ with humanity? Why are psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety, fear, and suicide on the increase, and why are conventional Western therapies unable to stem the tide? To approach this we must first look inside ourselves – to explore our own purpose in life and extend that principle to the rest of humanity. Despite the advances of modern Western psychology and the development of therapies that do help many, one area that is largely unexplored is that of the ‘human spirit’ and spirituality since it is more convenient to consider the human mind as ‘machine’ that responds to external stimuli. In this powerful exploration into the human mind and its relationship with the human spirit, Malik Badri invites the reader to open the door to self-discovery, purpose and spirituality through the practice of contemplation, reflection and meditation – understanding the true meaning and experience of spirituality as well as one’s own place in Creation. Whilst central to worship in Islam, this will also be of great interest to, and help any reader wishing to explore the notion of spirituality whether as part of worship or simply as part of self development and inner healing.

An exploration of the art of magic and qabalistic psychology as practiced by Aleister Crowley, through the lens of the authors W E Butler and Tom Oloman. Aleister Crowley is one of the best known figures in Western Occultism, but books about him tend to focus on his life and personality, either idealising or demonising him. In this groundbreaking book, established author of the occult Ian Rees focuses instead on Crowley’s practice of magick, tracing its roots back to ancient Egypt, and considering his radical simplification of the Qabalah, called the Naples Arrangement. Rees also explores the ways in which Crowley brought teaching from Buddhism, Taoism and Advaita Vedanta into western practice. Particular attention is given to Crowley’s novel Moonchild, which is at its core a guide to the practice of deep magick and introduces readers to the figure of Simon Iff, who is Crowley’s image of the Master Magickian. The Way of Deep Magick explores Crowley’s inspirational works The Book of the Law and The Holy Books, unearthing the magical formulae found within them. It also looks at Crowley’s central practice of the Mass of the Holy Ghost. These works are linked to the traditions of the Divine Name and the ancient tradition of the Tree and the Fountain, the Moon and the Mountain. Central to the book is the communion with the mysterious presence of the Holy Guardian Angel which leads us through the reactive and restrictive patterns of the past; establishes us in pure presence; and enables us to bridge between dualistic existence and the experience of non-dual states of consciousness which unite Love, Will and the simple and direct experience of Being. The book concludes by considering the mystery of embodying the generative star of will and uniting with and being upheld by the serpent of deep imagination; or in other words becoming the Servant of the Star and Snake.

"A history of Chinese philosophy in the so-called Axial Period (the period of classical Greek and Indian philosophy), during which time China evolved the characteristic ways of thought that sustained both its empire and its culture for over 2000 years. It is comprehensive, lucid, almost simple in its presentation, yet backed up with incomparable authority amid a well-honed discretion that unerringly picks out the core of any theme. Garlanded with tributes even before publication, it has redrawn the map of its subject and will be the one essential guide for any future exploration. For anyone interested in the affinities between ancient Chinese and modern Western philosophy, there is no better introduction" —Contemporary Review "The book is an expression of first-rate scholarship, filled with deep insights into classical Chinese thought. At the same time, it provides a comprehensive and well-balanced discussion that is accessible to the general reader. It is the rare kind of book that will be used as a standard text in introductory courses and be regularly consulted and cited by specialists working in the field." —Philosophical Review "For those who will read only one book on Chinese philosophy, A. C. Graham's Disputers of the Tao is it." —Journal of the History of Philosophy A. C. Graham (1919–1991) is considered by many to have been the leading world authority on Chinese thought, grammar, and textual criticism and the greatest translator of Chinese since Waley. He taught at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University (where he was Professor of Classical Chinese until 1988) Yale, Ann Arbor, Tsing Hua, Brown, and Honolulu. He was a Fellow of the British Academy. His numerous works include Two Chinese Philosophers (1958), Poems of the Late T'ang (1965), Chuang-tzu: the Seven Inner Chapters (1981), and Studies in Chinese Philosophical Literature (1986).

A Question Of Being written by Karin Holsinger Sherman and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-07-20 with Religion categories.

James Douglass's writings have been recognized as among the most challenging and inspiring explorations of nonviolence and Christian discipleship in the last century. Throughout his career, Douglass has argued forcefully for the integration of contemplation and resistance, theology and cultural critique, spirituality and prophetic involvement. His work has inspired many of the key figures in recent debates regarding just war, Christian nonviolence, and radical discipleship and continues to be highly relevant in our contemporary situation. In A Question of Being, the first book-length treatment published on Douglass's writings, Karin Holsinger Sherman provides an introduction to and engagement with this important body of work through an exploration into its contextual history, influences, and main themes. Moreover, the author argues that these themes work together to create an Òontology of nonviolence, an ontology that integrates the forces of resistance and contemplation so important to Douglass. The book begins by examining Douglass's biography and three broad historical trajectories that give context to his thought: the fusion of Christianity and American nationalism in the early Cold War period; the emergence of cultural critique in the late fifties and early sixties, and the Catholic pacifist tradition; and the post-1972 period of disillusionment. Holsinger Sherman then considers the lives and thought of Dorothy Day, Mahatma Gandhi, and Thomas Merton, as well as their unique intellectual and exemplary influence on Douglass's ideas. After explicating the themes of the cross and the kingdom as they developed chronologically in Douglass's writing career, this book draws together Douglass's thought to reveal an Òontology of nonviolence.Ó In her conclusion, Holsinger Sherman argues that this ontology of nonviolence is the key to understanding Douglass's integral theology of contemplation and resistance.
