Excerpt from The Teacher and Old Age The calling of the public-school teacher is not yet, in America, a profession. But everywhere the earnest friends of education are striving to transform teaching from a temporary and often casual employment into a vocation exhibiting something of the systematic preparation, the stability, the progressiveness, and the dignity of a profession. Some of the means that have been found helpful in improving the professional status of the teacher are: professional training, both before and during service; state certification; more permanent tenure; skilled supervision; promotion to higher rank or salary on the basis of merit; and more attractive financial compensation for work done. Excerpt from Reminiscences of an Old Teacher After much hesitation I have concluded, notwithstand ing the advice of some of my best friends. To reprint from the Journal of Education some of the papers which I fur nished, at the editor's request, as Reminiscences of an Old Teacher. I should be glad to have every young man in the country seeking for a truly liberal education live such a life as I lived till I entered college. Through life, though spent at a distance from the fields, and in an occupation as unlike husbandry and gardening as possible, I have en joyed the familiar knowledge I obtained of the earth, and of everything that grows out of the earth, and of the animals, quadrupeds, birds, fishes, and insects with which I became familiarly acquainted. I have been benefited and blest by the habits I formed of using all my bodily faculties in daily vigorous exercise for some hours every summer's day till I entered college. Excerpt from The Status of the Teacher The status of the teacher - the relation of the teacher to the community, to the school, to the pupils, to the parents of the pupils - this is the subject of frequent, and sometimes serious, misconception on the part of all concerned. This misconception is based upon a corresponding lack of understanding of the school itself. A very few instances serve to illustrate the varying phases of the misunderstanding. It is illustrated by the citizen who rebels against the payment of his school-tax. It is illustrated by the parent who says to the teacher: "I pay taxes; you are my employee; you must promote my child because I tell you to." It is illustrated by the teacher who reports to the parent with an air of personal injury: "Your boy annoys me very much in the classroom." It is illustrated by the principal who permits an unlicensed person to substitute in a class, provided he is willing to "take the chance" that he will get his pay. The following pages attempt to explain each relation of the teacher in its true light. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Teacher: The School, and the Community IN preparing the following pages the author has had in mind the three-fold object of modern education: the training of the physical, the mental, and the moral nature of the child. The environment of school life should be in harmony with his unfolding nature and growing abilities, and it should also be a source of constant pleasure to him. The pupil who is absent from school should be con scious that he is missing something not enjoying a reprieve. To this end, a variety of suggestions, helps, and recreations are offered to make the study of the common branches more interesting. The chapters on nature study, the country school as a public health educator, and what to do with agriculture and home science may be most wel come to the rural teachers who have been struggling with such problems. Effort has been made to unify the work of the school and the home, and special consideration has been given to the school as a community center and as the stimulating source for clear thinking, good farming, and right living. Few New York teachers have had so long, so varied, so creditable, and so in fluential a career as Mr. Whitney, and it is felt that this record of his services is of value not only to his friends as a personal remembrance, but to the public as giving glimpses of the educational history of New York during the past half century. Excerpt from The Teacher The influences that have obtained in recruiting the vast army of teachers are infinite in variety. Some have taken up the work with definite purpose, some are teachers by acci dent A large number, especially among the women, have drifted into the ranks with no very definite idea as to how or why they are there or how long they may remain. But no matter whence these teachers come, no matter why, they should, being committed to the profession, consider carefully What it has to offer either as an occupation for a few years or for a life work. To the man, the situation pre sents one problem; to the woman, a different one entirely. There was a time when teaching offered to the young man a natural stepping-stone to a Wider or, at least, a different career. If he expected eventually to be a min ister, doctor, lawyer, or a business man, two or three years in the school-room was considered excellent preparation, and not a waste of time. Today it is necessary 'for a young man to select his chosen profession early and to enter upon it as soon as possible. All time spent in any other direction is deemed worse than thrown away. Competition is too great to admit of any but the direct road. This condition of affairs cuts off from the number of school men many naturally brilliant and well equipped, who, in former times, did excellent work in the school-room for short periods. Now and then today there is a young man who still finds teaching the first open door to Wider activity and broader culture. He teaches a year or two, saves a little money, growing a little bigger each month, until he sees other and more profitable opportunity for his increasing powers opening before him. This young man does not have much knowledge of pedagogy, often has no experience at all, but he brings something vital, virile, to the school-room which more than balances lack in technical requirements. What he brings counts for more than normal school train ing, a teacher's diploma from college, or than a head full of books on psychology, pedagogy, child study, and meth ods of discipline, good as they may be in their place. Excerpt from Lessons for Teachers of Beginners I am not worthy to be a teacher of little children may be the sincere cry of a fine nature, or it may be the false claim of a Uriah Heep. The distinction can be clearly seen by the attempt that is made to become more worthy. The Uriah Heep type of teacher combines with her protestations of humility a secret satisfaction with her ideals and methods, and steadfastly maintains her dead level. The truly humble teacher grasps at every possible means to increase her efficiency. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Philosophy of Teaching: The Teacher, the Pupil, the School The position assigned by our social rules to the teacher accords, not with the nobility of his functions, but with the insufficient appreciation entertained of them by the people, and is accompanied by a corresponding inadequate remuneration. And what is the result? Except a few single-hearted, noble men and women, by whom the profession of the teacher is illustrated and adorned; except a few self-sacrificing heroes and heroines whose love of children and of mankind reconciles them to an humble lot and ill-requited labors, the class of school-teachers throughout the whole civilized world barely reaches the level of that mediocrity which in all other callings suffices to obtain not merely a comfortable maintenance in the present, but a provision against sickness and for old age. What aspiring father, what Cornelia among mothers, select for their children the profession of a teacher as a field in which the talents and just ambition of such children may find scope? Nor can we hope for any improvement until a juster appreciation of the nobility of the teacher's vocation, and a more generous remuneration of his labors shall generally prevail. Excerpt from The Teacher Essays and Addresses on Education The papers of this volume fall into three groups, two of the three being written by myself. From my writings on education I have selected only those which may have some claim to permanent interest, and all but two have been tested by previous pub lication. Those of the first group deal with ques tions about which we teachers, eager about our im measurable art beyond most professional persons, never cease to wonder and debate: What is teaching? How far may it influence character? Can it be prao ticed on persons too busy or too poor to come to our class - rooms? To subjects of what scope should it be applied? And how shall we content ourselves with its necessary limitations? Under these diverse head ings a kind of philosophy of education is outlined. The last two papers, having been given as lectures and stenographically reported, I have left in their original colloquial form. A group of papers on Har vard follows, preceded by an explanatory note, and the volume closes with a few papers by Mrs. Palmer.. She and I often talked of preparing together a book on education. Now, alone, I gather up these frag mentsn. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
