Inspiring, dynamic and thought provoking read about Super Star's journey through addition and into recovery! This is a great read for anyone interested in gaining insight into addiction for the one with an addiction, for the family or loved ones, for anyone who would like to educate themselves about addiction from the perspective of one walking along the path. For the addict, the first 30 days are a rollercoaster of despair, cravings and emotions that addicts have either never had to deal with or have previously chosen to ignore. Maintaining sobriety during this time is often on a day-to-day, hour-by-hour, or second-to-second basis. To find success with sobriety, a person needs to have tools to deal with life from a new and unique perspective. As the relapse statistics indicate, it can be very scary as well as overwhelming to stay sober during this time of recovery. But what about the friends or family member of the addict? The ones that are watching their loved one struggle with the disease. How are they feeling? What is healthy for them to do or not do? How should they handle the difficult situations that arise? This book provides insight for the family member or loved one into the inner thoughts of an addict; both during active addiction and in early recovery. This is an opportunity to better understand that addiction isn't just about using the drug; it's about so much more. Addiction is a "thinking disease" and this book appropriately exposes how stinkin' thinkin' is at the core of every addiction! While there are many successful books on the market about addiction, The First 30 Days to Serenity: The Essential Guide to Staying Sober is the first actual day-by-day account of staying sober through the first 30 days of recovery, including the thoughts, feelings, conversations, events, stress, tears, family friction, despair and drama of each of those 30 days from the lens of an addict. The story chronicles rock bottom experiences, daily journals from my first 30 days in recovery followed by a stinkin' thinkin' and sober thinkin' reflection one year later. The reflections are important because they allow the reader to witness the amount of personal growth that can happen during the first year of sobriety when someone works a recovery program. The reflections identify when the thinking was improper and dangerous, which we call "Stinkin' thinkin'," and when they were healthy and useful, which we call "Sober thinkin'." This book is a tool to answering such questions as, "Should I be feeling this way on day 1?" "Am I crazy for thinking such a thought on day 18?" "How should I handle this situation on day 29?" The reader's experiences may not be the same as mine were, but there will be similarities that will allow an opportunity to gain insight through another's story. This book lets readers know that what they are going through or a loved one is going through are very much part of the recovery process. The experiences shared will allow the reader a deeper understanding into the thought process associated with addiction providing opportunities to gain insight into how to handle situations in a way that support recovery or support someone else in early recovery. By giving the reader real-life scenarios to associate with from someone who has been there, it shows that they too can find success in sobriety and be whoever they've always wanted to beeven a Rock Star or Super Star. This book was written for anyone who thinks it might be worth getting high just one more time or who thinks life could not get any worse from using. I am here to tell them through my stories that it CAN and it WILL. The road to SERENITY through SOBRIETY starts right now!

The Sober Survival Guide - How to Free Yourself from Alcohol Forever - By Simon Chapple. Foreword by Annie Grace - Author of This Naked Mind - Control Alcohol Are you tired of thinking about drinking? Hands up if you believe any of the following about drinking alcohol to be true: I can’t have fun without alcohol. Imagine going to a party without drinking! it makes me feel less anxious or depressed; it helps me sleep; I can’t relax without it; it makes me entertaining to be around; it fits the lifestyle of my boozy friends; I like the taste of alcohol; it’s cool and sophisticated; I’m not confident enough to talk to new people without it; it helps me deal with all the problems life throws my way; it stops me worrying about how much I’m drinking (ironic, I know). If you find yourself nodding at even one of these statements, then I know how you feel. I was a heavy daily drinker for over twenty years, I too used to believe that I couldn’t live without alcohol, and that once I’d had a few drinks I was funny to be around (hilarious in fact). Are you too are tired and fed up with the routine of drinking, and want to make a change and improve your life? Or you may simply be curious about how an alcohol-free life might look for you. Could it be better? Happier? Calmer? More peaceful? Perhaps you’re already on the path to changing your relationship with booze and might have read other ‘sober books’ or taken part in programmes to help you quit. I want you to know you can do the same as me and find complete freedom from alcohol, and that you don’t have to wait for years like I did. Also, I want to reassure you that alcohol addiction is never a person’s fault, and that there’s no need to blame yourself for finding it hard to give up. It honestly isn’t as difficult as you might think, and this book will provide the support, tactics and advice you need as you progress on your sober journey. The Sober Survival Guide is unique in that it is split into two parts. The first is designed to set you up for success and put you in a place where you can find freedom from alcohol if that’s what you want. The first part of the book contains essential information for when you’re in the early stages of controlling your drinking. The second part serves as a handbook as you move forward into an alcohol-free life and is where this book comes into its own. As you read it you’ll see I’ve used my own experiences and those of the people I’ve worked with to help ensure you’re ready for the challenges, fears, and questions that will come up in the years after quitting drinking. You’ll learn how to handle the work Christmas party without a glass of bubbly in hand, the joys of sober holidays, what to do when you stop drinking but your partner won’t, and a whole lot more. With this part you can dip in and out, picking the chapters that address the problems you’re facing that day or week. This unique quit alcohol book also shares my own stories and personal accounts that helped me learn (sometimes the hard way), so as well as providing vital tools and tactics it will also leave you with a smile on your face and provide you with a fun and enjoyable read. Part memoir, part sober guide and 100% alcohol free - The Sober Survival Guide is perfect for anyone looking to free themselves from the grip of alcohol. Simon Chapple is the founder of Be Sober one of the largest online 'quit drinking' communities, he is also a speaker and works as a Certified Alcohol Coach working with This Naked Mind helping people change their relationship with alcohol. He has helped thousands of people quit drinking and has made it his life mission to spread the word about the benefits an alcohol-free life brings. This book is a guide to help you interpret the text Alcoholics Anonymous, more fondly known as the Big Book. The intention is not to change the message but to make it more approachable by simplifying the language to ensure that the essential points in each chapter are absorbed and correctly understood. When the Big Book was written in 1939, the programme of recovery and the fellowship were one and the same; people met with the sole purpose of helping those who were still struggling. The message was shared with them directly, always following the clear-cut directions that were laid out in the Big Book. So, what happened? We are now spoilt for choice with the number of meetings and different fellowships throughout the world. AA, NA, CA, OA and many other organisations address a variety of addictive behaviours. In any of these fellowships, it isn't difficult for a newcomer to find someone to "sponsor" them in the same way that they had been sponsored. This is excellent news for those who still suffer from any type of addiction. However, somewhere along the way, the original message has become changed. Since the message has been carried by word of mouth for such a long period of time, these changes are understandable. I think of it as a huge game of "Chinese whispers".In the meetings, sometimes referred to as the rooms, we often find ourselves listening to and following the opinions of others. We may hear people talk about the steps and the programme, but they are not necessarily referring to the contents of the Big Book.I cannot say exactly why the programme has not been followed as written, but perhaps the language used in the original text feels outdated and prevents people from connecting with it. "The Solution", as described in the first 164 pages, has been left largely untouched for fear that the message would be lost. That message has helped millions of people, so, if you need help, I strongly urge you to read it. This book is designed to help people return to using the Big Book, allowing it to act as a guide to simplify The Solution while still keeping true to the words of the original text.Like the Big Book, this small book is a collaborative effort. I have consulted many others who have successfully completed the programme through this method. These people span all versions of fellowships, so no matter how your addiction has manifested itself - through drink, drugs, sex, shopping, food or anything else - I know from experience that the simple, unadulterated programme can change your life. No opinions have been stated, so you will not find anything that you cannot see clearly in black and white within the original pages of the Big Book. Occasionally, anecdotal references are included because I have found these examples to be helpful to the people I have worked with. For clarity, these will be included in italics. Remember, this is not my message that you are reading; it is THE original AA message. In many cases over the years, listening to our own message has nearly killed us!Before we begin, a quick word about God. From experience, I know that some people are reluctant to use the programme due to a perception that it contains strong religious overtones. Yes, the Big Book does make references to God, and it also makes it clear that you can use a higher power of your own understanding as your reference point. Instead of using spirituality and God as the foundation, this guide refers to the solution - the programme and morals - spiritual "Principles". Bill W, the principal author of Alcoholics Anonymous, had a sudden and unexpected spiritual experience. It had such an impact on him that it is clear why he would want it to be included. However, this is not the experience of everyone, and in fact, the Big Book itself refers to a personality change or a "psychic change" that can happen gradually. Not everyone has to have a "sudden spiritual awakening" for this material to be valid and helpful.

Thinking Simply About Addiction written by Richard Sandor and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-03-05 with Psychology categories.

A profound yet practical guide to understanding addiction and recovery from an authority on the subject. No social problem today causes greater confusion than addiction. Whatever form it takes — alcohol, heroin, cocaine, nicotine, etc. — it tears apart homes and relationships, destroys careers and futures, and leaves loved ones asking: Why couldn't he stop once and for all? Or "get better"? Or control himself? Despite everything that's been said and written, many people remain deeply confounded about these problems. The addiction-treatment field itself is in a state of civil war because there is no consensus on what addiction is, much less what to do about it. Based on years of hard-won experience by a preeminent specialist in addictive behavior, Thinking Simply About Addiction explains the core truth of addiction: It is not a neurosis, a physical malady, a behavioral choice, or, in the narrowest sense, a moral failure. It is an automatism — an involuntary, non-stoppable behavior that once triggered leaves the addict powerless. It is a human problem and a part of human nature. As such, it is something that we all experience. In four to-the-point chapters, Thinking Simply About Addiction rises above the noise level and provides real-world help and new ways of thinking for addicts and those who care for them. Its insights are so profoundly clear and sensible that many readers will be able to say: Finally, someone gets it.
