Jennie Nash’s “winning debut,”* The Last Beach Bungalow, was followed by The Only True Genius in the Family, a “page-turning delight.”** Now she introduces us to two women who learn the lessons of grief—and of hope… A photo of her sons. A doormat from Target. Twenty-three tubs of fabric. Somehow it comforts Lily to list the things she lost when a wildfire engulfed the Santa Barbara avocado ranch she shared with her husband, Tom. He didn’t make it out either. His last act was to save her grandmother’s lace from the flames—an heirloom she has never been able to take scissors to, that she was saving for someday… As she negotiates her way through her grief, mourning both the tangible and intangible, Lily wonders about her long marriage. Was it worth all the work, the self-denial? Did she stay with Tom just to avoid loneliness? Should she have been more like her mother, Eleanor— thrice-married and even now, approaching eighty, cavalier about men and, it seems, even about her daughter’s emotions? It is up to Lily to understand what she could still gain even when it seems that everything is lost. Someday has arrived… *Publishers Weekly **Book Club Classics

Twists And Turns In The Heart S Antarctic written by Hélène Cixous and has been published by Polity this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Fiction categories.

"Twists and Turns in the Heart's Antarctic is a compelling new volume in Hélène Cixous's search for lost time. Readers of earlier volumes-- Hemlock and Hyperdream, among others-- will reconnect with familiar characters: Eve, the elderly mother now in her hundredth year, Hélène, the daughter, who never expected to become a mother at 70, and the brother, childhood companion and rival. She has almost no time to write. ... Twists and Turns, like all Cixous's books, is a many-faceted text, whose narrative spins its webs in corners familiar to Cixous readers: corners with books and writers - Montaigne, Proust, Kafka, Derrida; a theater and plays; friendship, and love. It is a tale on the scale of Greek myth, about the inescapable entanglements of family relationships, that can lead one, in hyperbolic mode, to envision murder and suicide ... This is a tale with profoundly touching reversals."--Front book cover flap.

Ulysses And The Irish God written by Frederick K. Lang and has been published by Bucknell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with Catholic Church in literature categories.

"This is the most comprehensive and original of the studies dealing with Joyce's response to the idea of God accepted in Ireland and to the sacred images and rituals prevalent there. It shows how in Ulysses he undermines and exploits the crucial elements of his rejected faith: how he recalls the omnipotent Father to reveal his artistic powers, the incarnated Son to celebrate his own human images, and the consecrated host to imply his hidden spiritual presence." "Frederick K. Lang has closely analyzed both Joyce's texts and his sources, including important sources previously unidentified. First, he reveals that Joyce's transubstantiation of theology and liturgy in Ulysses is foreshadowed in his first short story. There, by setting the Latin Mass in an Irish home, Joyce casts doubt upon the Church's ability to transform matter, and, in his revised version of the story, he casts further doubt by including parallels with the Greek liturgy, a rite he regarded as subversive of the Latin Mass. Next, Lang reinterprets Joyce's theory of literary art in light of its specific origins in Aquinas and the New Testament, and in doing so he reveals the precise meaning of the term "epiphany." He proceeds to demonstrate that the earlier theory, including the concept of epiphany, underlies the Hamlet theory, and that the famous reference to "love" is linked to God's narcissism and creativity. How the literary artist resembles God is implied not only in the Hamlet theory but in the references to orthodox and heretical views of the Father-Son relation and the Eucharist, views that explain Joyce's reincarnation as both Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom." "In Ulysses the word "reincarnation" has an additional meaning. Not only does Joyce's soul assume new flesh, but so does the Word of God. Along with the feast of Christ celebrated in Ireland on 16 June 1904, the novel assimilates first the Mass, then the black mass, and finally the Good Friday liturgy. At the end of Ulysses, Molly Bloom emerges as "the genuine christine" prophecied on the first page. Joyce's offering of her body, blood, and water evokes both the Crucifixion and the Eucharist, and thus makes flesh a Gospel read in Irish churches on the day he chose as Bloomsday." "This book is lucid and provocative. Free of theory and jargon, it not only gives Joyce scholars fresh information and new interpretations, but would interest and enlighten any reader of Ulysses."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Forty Rooms written by Olga Grushin and has been published by Penguin this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-02-16 with Fiction categories.

The internationally acclaimed author of The Dream Life of Sukhanov now returns to gift us with Forty Rooms, which outshines even that prizewinning novel. Totally original in conception and magnificently executed, Forty Rooms is mysterious, withholding, and ultimately emotionally devastating. Olga Grushin is dealing with issues of women’s identity, of women’s choices, that no modern novel has explored so deeply. “Forty rooms” is a conceit: it proposes that a modern woman will inhabit forty rooms in her lifetime. They form her biography, from childhood to death. For our protagonist, the much-loved child of a late marriage, the first rooms she is aware of as she nears the age of five are those that make up her family’s Moscow apartment. We follow this child as she reaches adolescence, leaves home to study in America, and slowly discovers sexual happiness and love. But her hunger for adventure and her longing to be a great poet conspire to kill the affair. She seems to have made her choice. But one day she runs into a college classmate. He is sure of his path through life, and he is protective of her. (He is also a great cook.) They drift into an affair and marriage. What follows are the decades of births and deaths, the celebrations, material accumulations, and home comforts—until one day, her children grown and gone, her husband absent, she finds herself alone except for the ghosts of her youth, who have come back to haunt and even taunt her. Compelling and complex, Forty Rooms is also profoundly affecting, its ending shattering but true. We know that Mrs. Caldwell (for that is the only name by which we know her) has died. Was it a life well lived? Quite likely. Was it a life complete? Does such a life ever really exist? Life is, after all, full of trade-offs and choices. Who is to say her path was not well taken? It is this ambiguity that is at the heart of this provocative novel.

Whisper these words from one who knows the weariness, the worry, and the weight and hear the whisper of peace from the One who hears, who sees, who knows, and who cares. –Teri Lynne Underwood, author of Praying for Girls: Asking God for the Things They Need Most “I’m convinced that one of the reasons God allows us to walk through hard things is so He can use our lives to tell a story of His faithfulness to the people around us watching, waiting to see if the God we say we love is worth following. He did it with Hosea. He did it with Paul. He is doing it with Stacey Thacker. Over the last few years I have watched her absolutely refuse to stop clinging to Christ in the midst of a deluge of hard things. The words in this book are hard-won. They are hard-lived. These prayers have been prayed so many times...but the beauty of threadbare prayers is that they never, ever wear out...even when we do. I’m so grateful to Stacey, and the entire Thacker family, for allowing us to see Jesus in them.” –Brooke McGlothlin, co-founder of millionprayingmoms.com, and author of Praying for Boys: Asking God for the Things They Need Most "I was deeply moved reading Threadbare Prayer. Moved in my core from page one, with burning tears, and then into comfort and truth of Jesus. Page after page, prayer after prayer, reminded me to lift my eyes from my struggle to The One who saves. " –Francie Winslow, Host of the Heaven in Your Home Podcast
