Published in association with the Turing Trust, this challenging collection is inspired by the brilliant mind of Alan Turing. It offers the puzzle enthusiast a tough, but enjoyable, challenge, with puzzles of many varied types. Alan Turing is often called the father of modern computing. During World War II, he worked at Bletchley Park, where top secret work was carried out to decipher the military codes used by Germany and its allies. Turing played a pivotal role in cracking intercepted coded messages that enabled the Allies to defeat the Nazis in many crucial engagements, and his work was vital in helping the Allies win the war. Sales of this book support the work of The Turing Trust, the charity set up by Alan's family in his memory to provide much needed computer equipment to schools in sub-Saharan Africa. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Turing Tests are a series of innovative puzzle books, inspired by the ingenious problem-solving skills of World War II codebreaker Alan Turing. Each title includes a variety of compelling puzzle types designed to challenge and stretch your mind. Do you have what it takes to solve them all?

Common Sense The Turing Test And The Quest For Real Ai written by Hector J. Levesque and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-09 with Computers categories.

What artificial intelligence can tell us about the mind and intelligent behavior. What can artificial intelligence teach us about the mind? If AI's underlying concept is that thinking is a computational process, then how can computation illuminate thinking? It's a timely question. AI is all the rage, and the buzziest AI buzz surrounds adaptive machine learning: computer systems that learn intelligent behavior from massive amounts of data. This is what powers a driverless car, for example. In this book, Hector Levesque shifts the conversation to “good old fashioned artificial intelligence,” which is based not on heaps of data but on understanding commonsense intelligence. This kind of artificial intelligence is equipped to handle situations that depart from previous patterns—as we do in real life, when, for example, we encounter a washed-out bridge or when the barista informs us there's no more soy milk. Levesque considers the role of language in learning. He argues that a computer program that passes the famous Turing Test could be a mindless zombie, and he proposes another way to test for intelligence—the Winograd Schema Test, developed by Levesque and his colleagues. “If our goal is to understand intelligent behavior, we had better understand the difference between making it and faking it,” he observes. He identifies a possible mechanism behind common sense and the capacity to call on background knowledge: the ability to represent objects of thought symbolically. As AI migrates more and more into everyday life, we should worry if systems without common sense are making decisions where common sense is needed.

This volume will bring together contributions from some of the leading experts on Alan Turing to create a comprehensive guide to Turing that will serve as a useful resource for researchers in the area as well as the increasingly interested general reader. The book will cover aspects of Turing's life and the wide range of his intellectual activities, including mathematics, code-breaking, computer science, logic, artificial intelligence and mathematical biology, as well as his subsequent influence.

The ideas that gave birth to the computer age Alan Turing, pioneer of computing and WWII codebreaker, was one of the most important and influential thinkers of the twentieth century. In this volume for the first time his key writings are made available to a broad, non-specialist readership. They make fascinating reading both in their own right and for their historic significance: contemporary computational theory, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and artificial life all spring from this ground-breaking work, which is also rich in philosophical and logical insight.
