Recent Arab intellectual debates are often described as revolving around Arab-Islamic cultural heritage (turāth) and the role that it ought to play in modern society. This debate is standardly characterized as a confrontation between traditionalists and modernists, the former idolizing an ‘authentic’ heritage, the latter blaming traditionalism for Arab society’s inability to ‘modernize’. This study argues that this standard narrative has become overly dominant, making it impossible for different perspectives to be either voiced or heard. It calls for a critical review of how we think about contemporary Arab thought through an analysis of the progressive-linear temporal structure underlying the authenticity-modernity dichotomy. Looking in detail at three Arab intellectuals of the last fifty years – Zakī Najīb Maḥmūd, Adonis, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Ṭāhā – the study shows how this temporal structure underlies their thinking, but also how their efforts to break away from it build on a critique of its temporal basis. This analysis in turn enables an overhaul of the authenticity-modernity paradigm, which not only leads to a richer, critical engagement with contemporary Arab thought, but also brings out its moral dimensions.

Mohammed Khaïr-Eddine (1941–1995), Abdelkébir Khatibi (1938–2009), and Abdellatif Laâbi (1942–) are three of the most important francophone Moroccan writers to have emerged in the 1960s. Belonging to the Souffles generation, named after the journal of culture and politics founded in 1966, they played a major role in cultural decolonization and the development of Moroccan literature. This book examines their works and legacy through the dual lenses of revolt and nostalgia. By weaving together comparative close readings of their writings with an analysis of the broader historical and political context in Morocco, the book demonstrates that these writers have used revolt and nostalgia to address state-sponsored violence, grapple with uncertainties about the writing process, and advance or revitalize their political and aesthetic projects. This edited book offers a collection of fresh and critical essays that explore the representation of the migrant subject in modern and contemporary Arabic literature and discuss its role in shaping new forms of transcultural and transnational identities. The selection of essays in this volume offers a set of new insights on a cluster of tropes: self-discovery, alienation, nostalgia, transmission and translation of knowledge, sense of exile, reconfiguration of the relationship with the past and the identity, and the building of transnational identity. A coherent yet multi-faceted narrative of micro-stories and of transcultural and transnational Arab identities will emerge from the essays: the volume aims at reversing the traditional perspective according to which a migrant subject is a non-political actor. In contrast to many books about migration and literature, this one explores how the migrant subject becomes a specific literary trope, a catalyst of modern alienation, displacement, and uncertain identity, suggesting new forms of subjectification. Multiple representations of the migrant subject inform and perform the possibility of new post- national and transcultural individual and group identities and actively contribute to rewriting and decolonizing history.
