Recent Arab intellectual debates are often described as revolving around Arab-Islamic cultural heritage (turāth) and the role that it ought to play in modern society. This debate is standardly characterized as a confrontation between traditionalists and modernists, the former idolizing an ‘authentic’ heritage, the latter blaming traditionalism for Arab society’s inability to ‘modernize’. This study argues that this standard narrative has become overly dominant, making it impossible for different perspectives to be either voiced or heard. It calls for a critical review of how we think about contemporary Arab thought through an analysis of the progressive-linear temporal structure underlying the authenticity-modernity dichotomy. Looking in detail at three Arab intellectuals of the last fifty years – Zakī Najīb Maḥmūd, Adonis, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Ṭāhā – the study shows how this temporal structure underlies their thinking, but also how their efforts to break away from it build on a critique of its temporal basis. This analysis in turn enables an overhaul of the authenticity-modernity paradigm, which not only leads to a richer, critical engagement with contemporary Arab thought, but also brings out its moral dimensions.

Peled-Shapira explores the connections between politics, society and literary expression in the works of the Iraqi writer Gha'ib Tu'ma Farman (1927-1990). As the first Iraqi to have composed a modern novel, a perusal of Farman's oeuvre reveals the artistic techniques through which he depicts the complex relationship between the Leftist intelligentsia and the Iraqi regime in the middle of the twentieth century, a period that for the former meant persecution and exile. Peled-Shapira examines Farman's involvement with Communism and the way he documents the Leftist intellectuals' agenda through literature. At the same time she offers a new detailed reading of his virtuoso use of the Arabic language. This book presents an in-depth study of the unique metaphors and the image of Baghdad, which play a prominent role in Farman's works, and hence paves the way to a better understanding of how this prolific writer coped with the predatory regime and his own inner world. The insights on the theme of exile in the book can also be applied on the lives of other intellectuals in the period in question, in and outside Iraq alike.

Mohammed Khaïr-Eddine (1941–1995), Abdelkébir Khatibi (1938–2009), and Abdellatif Laâbi (1942–) are three of the most important francophone Moroccan writers to have emerged in the 1960s. Belonging to the Souffles generation, named after the journal of culture and politics founded in 1966, they played a major role in cultural decolonization and the development of Moroccan literature. This book examines their works and legacy through the dual lenses of revolt and nostalgia. By weaving together comparative close readings of their writings with an analysis of the broader historical and political context in Morocco, the book demonstrates that these writers have used revolt and nostalgia to address state-sponsored violence, grapple with uncertainties about the writing process, and advance or revitalize their political and aesthetic projects. In doing so, this study traces a literary genealogy of political resistance, aesthetic subversion, and nostalgic reconstruction in postcolonial Morocco, while offering a nuanced historical perspective that is closely attuned to the specificities of Moroccan postcoloniality and sensitive to individual trajectories and experiences. This monograph explores and investigates narratives of physical, psychological, and emotional dislocation that take place within the Arab world, approaching them as manifestations of the Arabic word ghurba, or estrangement, as a feeling and state of being. Distancing itself from the centrality of the “West” in postcolonial and Arabic literary studies, the book explores experiences of migration, displacement and cosmopolitanism that do not directly ensue from the encounter with Europe or the European other. Covering texts from the Levant, Egypt, the Arabian Peninsula and beyond from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, the book grounds narratives of dislocation in the political, social and cultural structures that affect the everyday lived experiences of individuals and communities. An analysis of Arabic, Turkish and English texts – encompassing fiction, memoirs and translations – highlights less visible narratives of ghurba, specifically amongst ethnic minorities and religious communities.
