1920s OXFORD: HOME TO C.S. LEWIS, J.R.R. TOLKIEN... AND ANNA FRANCIS, A YOUNG GREEK REFUGEE LOOKING TO ESCAPE THE GRIM REALITY OF HER NEW LIFE. THE NIGHT THEY CROSS PATHS, NONE SUSPECT THE FANTASTIC WORLD AT WORK AROUND THEM. Anna Francis lives in a tall old house with her father and her doll Penelope. She is a refugee, a piece of flotsam washed up in England by the tides of the Great War and the chaos that trailed in its wake. Once upon a time, she had a mother and a brother, and they all lived together in the most beautiful city in the world, by the shores of Homer’s wine-dark sea. But that is all gone now, and only to her doll does she ever speak of it, because her father cannot bear to hear. She sits in the shadows of the tall house and watches the rain on the windows, creating worlds for herself to fill out the loneliness. The house becomes her own little kingdom, an island full of dreams and half-forgotten memories. And then one winter day, she finds an interloper in the topmost, dustiest attic of the house. A boy named Luca with yellow eyes, who is as alone in the world as she is. That day, she’ll lose everything in her life, and find the only real friend she may ever know.

A Wolf in the Attic: Even though she was only two, the little girl knew she must never go into the attic. Strange noises came from there. Mama said there was a wolf upstairs, a hungry, dangerous wolf . . . but the truth was far more dangerous than that. Much too dangerous to tell a Jewish child marked for death. One cannot mourn what one doesn’t acknowledge, and one cannot heal if one does not mourn . . . A Wolf in the Attic is a powerful memoir written by a psychoanalyst who was a hidden child in Poland during World War II. Her story, in addition to its immediate impact, illustrates her struggle to come to terms with the powerful yet sometimes subtle impact of childhood trauma. In the author's words: “As a very young child I experienced the Holocaust in a way that made it almost impossible to integrate and make sense of the experience. For me, there was no life before the war, no secure early childhood to hold in mind, no context in which to place what was happening to me and around me. The Holocaust was in the air that I breathed daily for the first four years of my life. I took it in deeply without awareness or critical judgment. I ingested it with the milk I drank from my mother’s breast. It had the taste of fear and despair.” Born during the Holocaust in what was once a part of Poland, Sophia Richman spent her early years in hiding in a small village near Lwów, the city where she was born. Hidden in plain sight, both she and her mother passed as Christian Poles. Later, her father, who escaped from a concentration camp, found them and hid in their attic until the liberation. The story of the miraculous survival of this Jewish family is only the beginning of their long journey out of the Holocaust. The war years are followed by migration and displacement as the refugees search for a new homeland. They move from Ukraine to Poland to France and eventually settle in America. A Wolf in the Attic traces the effects of the author’s experiences on her role as an American teen, a wife, a mother, and eventually, a psychoanalyst. A Wolf in the Attic explores the impact of early childhood trauma on the author’s: education career choices attitudes toward therapy, both as patient and therapist social interactions love/family relationships parenting style and decisions regarding her daughter religious orientation Repeatedly told by her parents that she was too young to remember the war years, Sophia spent much of her life trying to ”remember to forget” what she did indeed remember. A Wolf in the Attic follows her life as she gradually becomes able to reclaim her past, to understand its impact on her life and the choices she has made, and finally, to heal a part of herself that she had been so long taught to deny.

All his young life growing up at the Home for Young Gentleman Orphanage a talented but misunderstood boy named Ward was told that he was different than the other boys and didn´t fit in because he had recurring dreams about half men, half wolf monsters and obsessively drew them. But were these visions dreams or memories? Was his diagnosis of having sleep tremors accurate or was he in fact starting to turn into a werewolf? There is truth to all myths and legends, and sometimes the worst monsters are not the ones hiding in closets or under beds. Ward the Wolf Boy explores overcoming abuse and neglect and embracing your true inner self, and Ward finds out that being a werewolf doesn t make you a bad person. What makes this book unique is several key factors. Werewolves are usually mindless killing monsters and they are usually just a sidekick for vampires or wizards and are rarely a main character in books despite their popularity. Ward and the other werewolves in "Ward the Wolf Boy" is more of a shape shifter and not a monster or a killer. In this adaption of the werewolf legend when werewolves turn they can still speak and think and behave like their normal human selves, only with greater strength and keener wolf like senses. While there are vampires in the series, they are the natural enemies of werewolves and they are grotesque teritorial killers. But this book is primarily about werewolves. They are the stars and heros of the series. "Ward the Wolf Boy, Night Terrors" is an introduction to the heros and villains of the series of books that are already in the planning stages. It appeals to the young and young at heart, and the author hopes that it´s readers will grow up with the young boy werewolf as he understands and fullfills his destiny.

Andrews a fiercely devoted fan base and became an international cult classic. At the top of the stairs there are four secrets hidden—blond, innocent, and fighting for their lives… They were a perfect and beautiful family—until a heartbreaking tragedy shattered their happiness. Now, for the sake of an inheritance that will ensure their future, the children must be hidden away out of sight, as if they never existed. They are kept in the attic of their grandmother’s labyrinthine mansion, isolated and alone. As the visits from their seemingly unconcerned mother slowly dwindle, the four children grow ever closer and depend upon one another to survive both this cramped world and their cruel grandmother. Telling Lies About the Wolves is a collection of fourteen short stories by Mason Powell, some of them previously unpublished, most previously uncollected. Those who know the work of Mason Powell primarily from his intense and often frightening novel The Brig may be surprised at this collection of his early, literary, tales. While they primarily deal with Gay characters, their insights about the human condition reach across the boundaries by which humanity too frequently catagorizes itself into us and them, and reveal eternal truths (some of them not very pretty, but nonetheless true) such as are at the heart of all good fiction. There are homoerotic moments, to be sure, but they are handled with a restraint and delicacy which one might not expect from this author. The great surprise of this collection is the variety of the stories. Next to cynicism there is sentiment. Next to the grimly realistic, there is the heroic, which usually emerges in us ordinary mortals only in the most extraordianry circumstances. In some places the author achieves a kind of mystical bond with the reader which can be downright alarming. And there is humor, sometimes subtle, sometimes slapstick; never a thing one associates with a writer most famed for erotica. The short story, as a form, has been out of favor for a while. With the shortened attention span of the average person these days, and art of all kinds coming in bytes rather than banquets, it might very well be that the time for a revival of short reading has come. If so, Mr. Powell1s collection comes at a most welcome juncture. If you have never read any fiction about Gay people, this might be a good place to start. If you have, and your tastes are sharpened, you may find this a feast of many courses. --Olin T. Fredegar

“FASCINATING ... MANY WILL APPRECIATE THE NOSTALGIA AND PERSONAL LOOK INTO THE GREATEST ERA OF OUR AMERICAN HISTORY.” —Dr. Bruce Shields, Professor Emeritus, Yale This personal history recalls family, love, and young romance beneath the roar of a raging war, building on letters stored away during World War II. A widower now remarried, Charles Young retires from a long teaching career in Greece and returns home to Connecticut with his wife, Mary. After they move into his old family homestead, they discover a box of letters in the attic. One letter at a time an early life is revealed. Charles was just finishing junior high school when World War II broke out. He was a boy then and deeply in love with a girl named Launa, with whom he’d meet at night in the park every full moon—until they were discovered and Launa was sent away. There was nothing to keep them together but their letters. In 1943 Charles was accepted into a naval program at Harvard University. Away from his family for the first time, he kept in contact once again through letters, which included a detailed account of his service with the marines during the battle of Okinawa and the final surrender by the Japanese in Tokyo Bay in 1945. Sharing a cache of letters from the early forties, Charles recalls family, friendship, and love throughout his life.
