How do people identify fragmented letters? The identification of fragmented letters is one piece of evidence that the various elements of cognitive functions work well. This ability included in the cognitive functions is considered to be in common with the ability of human ancestry to distinguish animals camouflaged in jungles. This book is concerned with a new method for examining cognitive functions with the use of a computer system presenting fragmented letters of the English alphabet. The results of the test on the identification of fragmented letters have shown that there is neither gender nor age difference in correct answer rates on fragmented letters at several fragmentation rates. The findings indicate that the ability of healthy people to read the fragmented letter as well as the full letter is unaffected by the differences in age and educational history. The book also presents the mechanism of the vision system for identification of fragmented letters.

The Cardiovascular System During Exercise And Recovery written by Tatsuhisa Takahashi and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-02-04 with Medical categories.
This book highlights circulatory dynamics and cardiovascular control during exercise and post-exercise and recovery. Composed of seven chapters, it begins with an introduction to the enhanced recovery of heart rate to its pre-exercise resting level by light exercise, compared with heart rate during complete-rest recovery. The second chapter deals with similar time courses of mean blood pressure during recovery from exercise in an upright and a supine position. The recovery of a slowly decreasing heart rate after exercise is shown in the third chapter and facilitated by cool-down exercise. Chapter four addresses that a biphasic change in heart rate at the onset of light exercise, occurs from rest in upright, but not in a supine posture. The book then highlights postexercise regulation of the cardiovascular system between inactive and active recovery from moderate cycle exercise in an upright and a supine position in the fifth chapter. Chapter six demonstrates the differences in bloodflow velocity in the femoral artery measured by Doppler ultrasound velocimetry between inactive, passive, and active recovery. The book finally presents the Doppler measurement of blood flow velocity in the middle cerebral artery at rest and during cycle exercise and compares measurements between men and women. This publication aims for a broad audience that includes medical students and residents, graduate students in the medical sciences, kinesiology, biomedical engineering, and sports medicine, specialists in aerospace medicine and gravitational physiology, cardiologists, and any physician or medical professional with an interest in human cardiovascular function.

What were the circumstances that led to the development of our cognitive abilities from a primitive hominid to an essentially modern human? The answer to this question is of profound importance to understanding our present nature. Since the steep path of our cognitive development is the attribute that most distinguishes humans from other mammals, this is also a quest to determine human origins. This collection of outstanding scientific problems and the revelation of the many ways they can be addressed indicates the scope of the field to be explored and reveals some avenues along which research is advancing. Distinguished scientists and researchers who have advanced the discussion of the mind and brain contribute state-of-the-art presentations of their field of expertise. Chapters offer speculative and provocative views on topics such as body, culture, evolution, feelings, genetics, history, humor, knowledge, language, machines, neuroanatomy, pathology, and perception. This book will appeal to researchers and students in cognitive neuroscience, experimental psychology, cognitive science, and philosophy. - Includes a contribution by Noam Chomsky, one of the most cited authors of our time

When individuals read or listen to prose they try to understand what it means. This is quite obvious. However, the cognitive mechanisms that participate in prose comprehension are far from obvious. Even simple stories involve com plexities that have stymied many cognitive scientists. Why is prose comprehen sion so difficult to study? Perhaps because comprehension is guided by so many domains of knowledge. Perhaps because some critical mysteries of prose comprehension reside between the lines-in the mind of the comprehender. Ten years ago very few psychologists were willing to dig beyond the surface of explicit code in their studies of discourse processing. Tacit knowledge, world knowledge, inferences, and expectations were slippery notions that experimental psychologists managed to circumvent rather than understand. In many scientific circles it was taboo to investigate mechanisms and phenomena that are not directly governed by the physical stimulus. Fortunately, times have changed. Cognitive scientists are now vigorously exploring the puzzles of comprehension that lie beyond the word. The study of discourse processing is currently growing at a frenetic pace.

I A Richards And The Rise Of Cognitive Stylistics written by David West and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-26 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.
I. A. Richards is an influential figure in literary criticism but has rarely been thought of as someone who laid the foundations for cognitive stylistics. This book proposes that Richards was a "protocognitivist". West argues that Richards anticipated many of the discipline's core aims, methods and assumptions. The book argues that the roots of cognitive psychology lie in early 20th-century psychology, when there was a focus on cognitive processes such as memory and learning, attention, categorisation, perception and consciousness. It was this cognitive psychology that Richards drew upon to build a theory of literature and interpretation - which in itself prefigured cognitive stylistics. West also suggests that Richards is one of the more influential British intellectuals of the 20th century, and that his work is still relevant today. West argues that cognitive stylistics is not, as Peter Stockwell has written, a "new science of literature and reading", but rather a discipline with a history that it continues to deny itself. This book will appeal to researchers and advanced students in stylistics and literary studies.

Transcultural Memory written by Rick Crownshaw and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-16 with Literary Criticism categories.
Memories are not static or frozen, remaining in particular sites or places, within and belonging to particular groups, cultures or nations; rather, memory travels. Broadly speaking, memory has travelled because of the demographic displacements brought about by modernity’s extremes – slavery, colonialism, ethnic cleansing and genocide – and also because of the trade, travel and migration made possible by globalisation. Whether social movement is violent, exilic, migratory, emancipatory or oppressive, it is accompanied by memory. With the movement of people, memories of modernity’s histories and postmodern legacies meet, correspond and often become mutually constitutive. Even where memories compete with each other for cultural dominance, mutual dialogue and recognition is implicit if not explicit. Memories travel through and across cultures and national boundaries, a process increasingly facilitated by mass media technologies. This collection explores a range of case studies of transcultural memory as well as theorising the mobility of memory as it travels. It was originally published as a special issue of the journal parallax.
