"This book tells the remarkable story of a Cherokee community in the mountains of North Carolina who survived the aftermath of the Trail of Tears. The story is explored through the lives of wealthy plantation owners Betty and John Welch and the members of their extended family. John was Cherokee, and Betty was White. Their farm, which included nine enslaved Africans, was on the northeastern edge of the Cherokee Nation at the time of the Cherokee removal of 1838. During removal, the Welches assisted roughly 150 more traditional Cherokees hiding in the steep mountains. After the removal, the Welches provided land for these families to rebuild a community, Welch's Town. From 1839 to 1855 the Welch plantation and Welch's Town functioned as distinct but tightly connected communities"--

This practical manual is devised for organic chemists and biochemists who, in the course of their researches and without previous experience, need to determine an ionization constant. We are gratified that earlier editions were much used for this purpose and that they also proved adequate for the in service training of technicians and technical officers to provide a Department with a pK service. The features of previous editions that gave this wide appeal have been retained, but the subject matter has been revised, extended, and brought up to date. We present two new chapters, one of which describes the determination of the stability constants of the complexes which organic ligands form with metal cations. The other describes the use of more recently introduced techniques for the determination of ionization constants, such as Raman and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, thermometric titrations, and paper electro phoresis. Chapter 1 gives enhanced help in choosing between alternative methods for determining ionization constants. Report by the Pres. Council on Bioethics of an inquiry that was occasioned by another forthcoming Council report on ethical questions in organ transplantation. The two reports are linked ethically: most of the organs procured for transplantation in this country come from deceased donors who have been declared dead in accord with the neurological standard (NS). This report is primarily concerned with a careful analysis of the ethical questions raised by the NS, i.e., the clinical determination of ¿whole brain death.¿ Since then, the NS has been accepted as one of two valid standards for determining death and has been adopted in many countries throughout the world. The Council has concluded that the NS remains valid.

In the last ten years, vast improvements in technology and instrumentation have allowed radio astronomy to go beyond the stage where its measurements were principally of interest to pure science (astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology, etc.) to a stage today where such measurements have important practical application in the fields of communications, radar, and antenna systems. This report covers the application of extraterrestrial radio sources, whose emission properties (flux density, spectrum, celestial position, angular size, etc.) have been firmly established by careful radio-astronomical observations, to the determination of antenna parameters. The extraterrestrial radio sources whose properties are presented are the sun, the moon, and the strong discrete (celestial) radio sources. The areas of application discussed in detail are the determination of antenna gain, effective area, and aperture efficiency and the measurement of the power pattern of an antenna. Another application briefly discussed is the measurement of effective radiated power from satellites. (Author).
